2012 MLB & Logo Changes

Re: Rangers. Last season they said they were going to refine the team's identity this offseason, but the person who was pushing for that hardest is no longer with the team (Chuck Greenberg). I asked Herbie Pallotta, the team's Fan Ambassador on twitter if they were still planning on changing anything and he said he hadn't heard any definitive news. So they're still a maybe.

Also, so long as the Rockies get rid of those :censored:ing horrible inner strokes on their scripts, they'll be fine.

The reason they couldn't change this season is because new unis have to be submitted to the MLB by May. The sale wasn't done until August, so the new guys couldn't change them for next season. I really can't see a way they don't become a red team next year. The majority of merchandise sold for the team is in red.

I know that before the season they had a poll on their site asking if the fans wanted Rangers back on the front of the home jerseys... the only thing that is now, with Nolan being the only decision maker in that situation, that he might decide, with his TEXAS TEXAS TEXAS TEXAS TEXAS boner, that he wants to keep things the way they are.

I'd also like to see the Astros change it up. I find their current color scheme too close to Arizona's. Or wait did Houston have maroon before Arizona? Arizona was still purple when Houston went brick red right

Yeah, Astros went to brick and black in 2000 when they moved into Minute Mark Park.

BTW- the red and black was a nod to the owner's logistics company's colors. Now that the 'Stros have a new owner, perhaps a new colors? Don't think it'll match his company as Crane Capital uses teal.

I hope not, they've got a solid look. If anyone needs to be redesigned, it should be the Diamondbacks. They pulled off purple, teal, and black really well.

Diamondbacks look a million times better in that color combo than the Astros do. It's more appropriate for a desert team. Plus they didn't pull off their old combo that well IMO. Too random throughout the set and just a bit too 90's for my taste. Plus they looked too much like the Rockies, a divisional opponent. The Astros look better in navy and orange. Closer to being more appropriate for a team with a space themed name than an old west train theme is.

IIRC, the Astros embraced black their first few years with the current color scheme. I think they should return to doing that, and the D'Backs should embrace their brick. First of all, it would help differentiate between those two teams. Secondly, I think it actually makes sense for a space-themed team to embrace black, so I don't totally consider it BFBS. Third of all, no other team in the NL West really embraces any kind of red (but 2 other NL West teams embrace black) and only one other NL Central team embraces black (but 2 other NL Central teams embrace kinds of red). So it would help those teams stand out within their divisions, as well. Just my two cents though, obviously you would have to get the fanbases to agree with that, and I'm sure there are plenty of Astros and D'Backs fans who disagree with my assessment.

The Diamondbacks shouldn't have stolen the Astros color scheme verbatim. I don't care if the colors work for a team in Arizona, someone already had those colors. And before someone mentions all the navy and red teams, those are colors comonly found in sports and fashion/society. Having two teams duplicate such a unique color scheme isn't right. Arizona had the perfect colors to begin with. Purple, teal and copper are representative of the southwest. They also won a World Series in those colors. Sure, they bastardized the colors by emphasizing black on the road and diminishing teal. Sure, the unis were horribly stale by 2006, and weren't really very good before then. So keep the colors and come up with new unis and possibly a new logo.

As for the Astros, they could go back to black as the primary with brick highlights, but they would be much better off if they went back to navy and orange, especially if they wore orange caps again. I would be perfectly happy if the Ari/Hou color scheme dissapeared from MLB completely.

So I emailed the Mariners, asking them to bring back the teal caps next year, and this is the reply they sent:

"This season the Mariners brought back the teal jerseys as part of the Go Green nights. As for the hats with the teal brims, there is currently no plans to change the game hats, however they do utilize those hats for batting practice. Those hats can be purchased at any of the Mariners team stores. Again thanks for taking the time to contact us. Go Mariners."

I'm no expert, but this seemed like a brush-off to me.

Could this palette work? Obviously not with that script; I just didn't feel like making a new one. It kind of obliquely recalls the rainbow guts, and warm colors work for a warm city.

A while ago, I was working on a dual Astros/Rockets concept that had both teams in those colors. It worked much better for the Rockets, because it emphasized red and white with just a little bit of orange trim (basically a slight update of the championship uniforms), so the orange blended in nicely and stayed out of the way. The trick with the Astros is finding a way to make the colors work on a grey background as well as white, something the current Astros aren't even that willing to do.

I was trying to do something with Placard Condensed for both teams' wordmarks, but again, better for the Rockets than the Astros.

The Astros are the one team in baseball that need to embrace their roots and go back to navy and orange. I liked the navy and gold set, but they really haven't been the same since they got rid of the star-H on their hats.

Call me crazy, but would it be ridicules, that a team named the Blue Jays actually have a blue jersey? I loved the jerseys they had prior to the re-brand. I wish, I wish, I WISH, the Mariners bring back the teal alternates. The navy ones they wear right now are boring to look at.

I'm an Astros fan, and I don't disagree with your assessment. The Astros started emphasizing the brick once their soon-to-be-former owner thought he could get away with them wearing the bricks on the road all the time because it's his favorite color. They have 2 alts and a BP jersey that are nearly identical (brick with varying wordmarks).

If they keep the current set, they SHOULD toss the brick alts and bring back black. If they go back to the navy/orange, they should NOT have a orange primary hat. I love the color orange (I've even bought a Giants alt), but not as a hat color.

And let's be real here: MLB Properties wouldn't sign off on a re-introduction of an identical old set for full time use. The 1965 set wouldn't return as is (sleeve patch aside), nor would we see a return of the tequila sunrise. They's find a way to "modernize" it (i.e. screw it up royally). They have a foundation for a good set. If they recolored everything to navy/orange/cream, it would work.

Navy hat, orange star

HOME - Cream uniform with navy/cream/orange name & numbers

AWAY - Grey uniform with navy/cream/orange name & numbers

ALT - Navy jersey with orange/cream name & number

BP - Orange jersey with navy/cream name & number

Go Astros!

Go Texans!

Go Rockets!

Go Javelinas!

I've posted this before, but I would love to see the Astros return to a modified (if it even needs to be modified) version of this set.I've always felt that the script+star was a timeless look.. Same thing with the "h-star" cap. The roads looked great, as well. :

So here's what we have for next year:

Marlins: Overhaul (definite)

Blue Jays: Overhaul/throwback (seems likely)

Astros: Overhaul (speculation), 50th anniversary patch (speculation)

Mets: 50th anniversary patch (speculation)

Padres: ?? (speculation)

Rockies: ?? (speculation)

Anything else?

What's the speculation with the Rox?

Here's my speculation of mlb uniform & logo changes for 2012.

1. Houston Astros: Complete overhaul on both home and road jerseys and home & road alternates. They will return to the Navy and orange combo and their logo will be a combination of their 80's and mid to late 90's set.

2.Oakland Athletics. A return to "A's" on their home uniforms and green alternate and Old English style lettering on their roads

3. Toronto Blue Jays: complete overhaul and a return to solid royal blue and baby blue on all uniforms

4. Milwaukee Brewers. "Milwaukee" on road jerseys

5.Seattle Mariners to bring back Navy/teal cap.

6.Florida Marlins. Teal and orange will be their primary colors. Home, road, and two alternates. One a teal home alt

7. New York Mets. Swap the black alternate for a Royal blue one

8. Baltimore Orioles. Orange home alt jersey and a black road alt with "Baltimore" across the chest in orange

9. San Diego Padres. Complete overhaul. Brown/yellow gold/khaki primary colors. Home, road, and a brown alt jersey

10.Pittsburgh Pirates. Canary Yellow throwback jersey for an alternate. Yellow/black hat from the early 70's added as the alt cap

11. Colorado Rockies. Overhaul on all uniforms. Drop the pinstripes on home and road jerseys, tweak the lettering a bit and add sleeves on the black alt and pinstripe alt

I'd be willing to bet almost all of that speculation is wrong.
