Hey, someone has to finish third in this division. If they win their Nashville/Dallas games, there's no reason they can't do it. They still won't be any damn good, but they can do it.

I would feel like the Central is "Chicago, then a gap to Minnesota and St. Louis, then a gigantic gap to everyone else"

Chicago and St. Louis battling for first (I don't trust such a huge rookie influx for the Hawks, while the Blues are still solid and will improve with Paajarvi), then everyone else. The Wild were bad last year and arguably got worse; it seems like the whole Mike Yeo thing just doesn't work over the course of a year. They could finish third. So could the Jets. From there, look out below.

Yeah, but it's a way more fun all-star game with more teams and better looking uniforms.

just for grins, here's a picture of Shane Doan with the worst trophy in the history of sports.

Did anyone actually care for the World Cup of Hockey? The only reference brought upon me by it was through EA's NHL 2005.

It seems like the entire Western conference is inevitably going to have some undeserving teams in the playoffs.

2012: Owners lockout players to get control over escalating salaries

2013: Owners overpay wildly for marginal players

OITGDNHL

That happens in every sport. "Getting control over salaries" is code for "taking a bigger cut of the profit."

Nobody locks out quite like the NHL, though.

Fielding Mellish would be a better commisioner than the Count.

Yeah, for all the talk about how the Western Conference is "tough," it's not very good. But it's tough. Let 'em know you're there!

Come to think of it, the Eastern Conference isn't very good, either. The Capitals have dick-tripped into the playoffs two years in a row with bad teams.

Yeah, three work stoppages under the current regime. This goes beyond "greedy owners," though that's certainly in play. There's a fair bit of incompetence here you just don't see among the rest of the "big four."

Four weeks after passing on their offer to buy and move the Coyotes for $220 million, the NHL is reportedly in negotiations to award an expansion franchise to Seattle for the 2014-15 season for $275 million. Way to work the long con, Gary!

On the positive, we already have the first chapter of OITGDNHL 2: "Supersonic Death: The short life of the Seattle Totems"
