The Browns did a great rebranding.... FOR ME TO POOP ON!

With this rebrand, you almost wonder how the Browns management sleeps in their cars at night.

Here I thought the Browns were actually going to get a real logo, even if it were a stylized CB or something like that. Still don't get why they don't have one. The new alternate logo is hands down one of the worst. It looks more like a logo for a sports bar chain than for a professional franchise.

So they sure did hype this change up, but I certainly don't remember them going all nuts when they rebranded from this

Rebrands are often out-sourced. I work in the creative dept at my company, do most of the graphical treatements, all of our web art (etc.), yet they out-sourced our logo redesign to an outside vendor. I took a few hacks, but was given no direction by the big bosses, so I basically had no chance. So its not on sportsdesign that the Browns have the NFL do the re-branding. Think of how insulated the NFL works. Of course they're going to want to control as much as possible.

Because that ^^^^^^ rebrand was a major fail.

The cut off version in your avatar would have been a better rebrand.

At least it could get marketed-up by Nike as representing the iconic way in which Cleveland management cuts off good decisions.

How close is this orange to the Bengals' shade?

Here is the Bengals shade:

I know it looks horrible...but I thought it would shrink on this site and it did not.

Hoping to get some insight from the Browns Creative guy (via twitter @SportDesign) regarding today's unveiling -- Insight like, did he actually get paid for this?

Via his twitter--"NFL designed Cleveland Browns primary and secondary marks have been released." I would like to think he wasn't paid. Even if he was, he picked the right logo (of the logos presented to the team), from what I know.

Also, he claims Nike was not involved with the logo--"they came from the NFL". (But Nike could still have been involved, who knows...)

This is what confuses me....Is Nike in charge of designing league uniforms? Logos? Both??

@SportDesign is clearly trying to push blame for Cleveland's laziness onto Nike on the "fill job". But unless he's just posing as "the Browns creative guru", he's likely just passing the buck.

Chris and the Browns creative team are in charge of marketing and promoting the team from within, and they are IMO, the best in the NFL. what they're not in control of are the major brand logos and uniforms. the front office would work with NFL Creative and sometimes Nike on that. there may be some input from a team's creative department, but they're not making big decisions. they work with what is given to them. if the teams needs a logo for an event (training camp for example), the internal creative team will handle that - or luckily for people like me, out source those things too.

everything that happens when it comes to rebrands and logos has to get the OK from NFL Creative. even when the team works with Nike or another source (Jaguars previous uniforms were done by local agency) it still has to pass through NFL. im not sure if Nike has to design the uniforms and primary logos, but they're certainly an option - but probably not he only one. i dont know how their deal is laid out specifically. this logo update definitely could have been handled by the NFL without any help from anyone else.

i'm not loving the logos as a whole (i do really like the word mark though) but mostly i think the strategy is a bit odd. i would not call it lazy by any means; we don't know exactly what their goals are but it looks like they're trying to retain their unique and widely loved brand points (blank helmet; stripe; colors, primary logo) while taking a creative chance on other things (jerseys). i love a mix of vintage and new elements so i have hope for the uniforms, but knowing Nike, who the NFL are targeting now, and from various things i've heard i'm afraid the rest of the uniform will be a big clash with the older elements.

I don't get the outrage.

Maybe it's because I didn't want them to make any changes and so far they haven't really. I'm pretty happy, actually. In the order of how I'd like them to color their facemask brown is second behind white. I'll take that over grey any day. Orange would just look terrible. edit: Look at that mockup above. The whole helmet works as a cohesive unit instead of the grey facemask fighting with the stripes and shell.

I just hope the uniforms aren't too much of a departure, and I hope the actual helmet resists matte finish

Based on the team presidents comments the uniforms are going to be a big departure. I'm not a fan of this team, but I liked their look and it's about to get ruined I think. The helmet looks good though.

Speaking of their look, did they lighten up the brown or keep it the same? It still looks black in some pictures.

That wasn't a knock on your avatar - just saying that even the screwy formatting from a website crafted a better option than what actually happened. :)

I waited 9 hours (I was at school) to see a helmet with a recolored facemask! My biggest gripe with the Browns was that a helmet isn't a primary logo, so I would have welcomed anything that wasn't a helmet as the new primary. Yet they continue to be dumb, and not get a proper primary logo. As for the dog, it's fitting for a class A minor league team.

I don't get the outrage.

Browns: "NEW LOGO COMING FEB 24TH"

NFL Nation: "Ooh! What could it be? The dawg? Elf? Regardless, finally a REAL logo!"

Browns: "Look! We made our facemask brown!!!"

I'm seeing some outrage, but it's mostly laughter and SMHing -- the same reaction we usually give Cleveland.
