2014 NFL Season Thread

The thing with DEN/SF/SEA- The Niners secondary, while hard-hitting, is a little slow and lacks blazing speed.

They were occasionally burned by the passing play here and there- see Palmer week 17.

Either way, DEN/SF doesn't end 43-8.

It's all about matchups- is SB 37 still the same type of game if it's Philly/Oakland or Tennessee/Tampa?

On that last point, if it would've been Titans-Bucs, then yeah I think so. That Titans team played WAY over their heads during those playoffs and they had no real offense to speak of. The two best teams in the league that year were clearly the Bucs and the Eagles (Raiders had a great offense, but it still had it's holes, and their defense was actually pretty old, if memory serves me right). There really wasn't an AFC team that season, matchup wise, that had the firepower to match up with either one of them (maybe the Steelers, but they lost in the playoffs to Tennessee in a game they really should've won). Eagles-Raiders I dunno. My guy says the Eagles, but you have to also remember that Super Bowl was a weird game. Barrett Robbins, Gruden knowing Callahan was too lazy to change anything, ect.

As for last season's Super Bowl, I think it would've been more similar, score wise, to the Saints-Colts Super Bowl. Niners would've won fairly easily, but again, that was a weird game.

Without looking it up, I'm pretty sure this is the Bills' first appearance on NBC since they got the package back. Based on how not crisp the Bills first unit is, I expect this to be the only time the Bills are on NBC this year.

I totally forgot that Jim Schwartz was fired and coaches for Buffalo now.

Bills played on Sunday Night in 2007 at home vs New England. I'm not gonna say what happened in that game.

I remember the game was a massive boatrace with Bellichick going for it on virtually every 4th down the Pats faced -- and converting on damn near all of them.

With the Cowboys I fully expect either a 7-9/8-8/9-7 type of season. I threw in 9-7 as being generously optimistic. Defense really worries me, I don't feel confident that they really improved at all. Now offensively I could see them doing somethings, unless they plan on lighting teams up with 40-50 points each game, I have my concerns going into this season. Now I don't want to channel crownking, but I have to think for Jason Garrett, it has to be playoffs or bust if he plans on keeping his job. I can't see him surviving the next off season going 7-9/8-8.

I too see us going 7-9/8-8/9-7. I don't think this is a make it or break year for Garrett. This defense lost it's best player in OTA's and lost a legend this off-season. Any coach would need time to make this defense good. Anything will be better than last year, we just have to... We can't possibly be worse, right?

This is season is the first one in a while where we don't have any high expectations. I think that'll be perfect for us. Offensively we'll be good, and if we manage to be average on defense, this season will be a success as far as I'm concerned.

Off the top of my head, I'm trying to think of teams who've never had a game aired by NBC since the 2006 TV contracts went into effect.

The Raiders, the Browns and maybe the Jaguars (possibly for a wildcard game)?

All the teams have been on SNF since NBC got the league back.

Is there a list? I'd be interested to see who's been on the most/least. I'm assuming the Pats and Cowboys are the top two, and the Bills likely dead last. Maybe the Lions and Jags are also down the list.

Cowboys 28, Colts 24, Eagles 21 top 3 including playoffs. Bills have 1.

The Bengals signed Andy Dalton to a six year 115 million dollar extension.

I really don't like this.

$19M a year to a guy who hasn't done squat in the playoffs...

Same ol' Bengals.

At least he could say he was a rookie and going against a good defense in the playoffs in previous years. That was pretty bad blowing it against the weak Charger defense last year. Dalton seems to be stuck in the middle in terms of QBs, better then some, yet not elite.

Same dumb Bengals, but not the same old Bengals. The Bengals have historically been one of the cheapest organizations in professional sports, even more so under Mike Brown. This is the opposite of cheap.

At least most of it isn't guaranteed.

I'll say Indianapolis is probably going to win the AFC South, go 11-5 this year, and end this year with a loss to Peyton's Broncos in the AFC Championship Game.

In other new: the Packers will retire Brett Favre's #4

I had Cincinnati in my confidence pool last year and was heavily rooting for the Bengals in that last playoff game. Watching, what, can't be described in words allowed on these forums, type of performance from Dalton makes me wonder why in the hell the Bengals decided to resign him already. Should've gave him some sort of motivation to be better when it counts.

A couple predictions I have for next season:

-Eagles only stay relevant because of their mediocre division. Their offense is quickly figured out by any coaching system with half a brain cell. (Which doesn't include those 2 games against the Redskins and Cowboys).

-Bucs finish with a positive 9-7 record just missing the playoffs. Bucs fans are hopefully for a playoff run in 2015-2016.

-Panthers fall apart in the South and Cam Newtons talents are well wasted.

-Cardinals are a dark-horse talented team that just miss the playoffs once again. Palmers mediocre performances is what holds this team back from winning important games against thenSeahawks and Niners.

-Lions still learn how to disappoint, and the hype from Matthew Stafford and Calvin Johnson combination diminishes further.

I've come to the realization that the Panthers have the potential to go 14-2, but also have the potential to go 2-14. I think the defense will stay at about the same level as last season, mostly keeping the core intact. The preseason will tell if the offense can thrive or not. Kelvin Benjamin has exceeded my expectations, and I think that the other new receivers can pull their weight. Greg Olsen will play a bigger role in the passing game this year, which I think is long overdue. Success in the division will be hard enough, with all other teams bulking up their rosters. New Orleans will stay tough, and Atlanta can't stay down forever. Tampa Bay has potential, but will not thrive with Mike Glennon. (Trust me, he sucks.) If the Panthers want to make the playoffs again, they must have to adapt to change quickly.
