2014-2015 NHL Jersey/Logo Changes

But this is the NHL and it's the Sharks. Neither are all that smart.

I mean, you would think the "We made the teal jerseys just like the black because 'less weight'" and "we've had bad playoff experiences with this idea that black brings good luck" would've been reason to stop doing that these past playoffs, and then look what happened :P

And it's the Stadium Series, meaning that it's going to be some newly designed chromed-out jersey that has nothing to do with either team's history. If it was the Winter Classic, I'd bet good money on the Sharks doing a 1991 teal jersey and the Kings probably with Gretzky-era unis, only because they've used their purple and gold set often the past few years. People know about them. No one's seen the Gretzky era unis since...Gretzky.

They actually wore them on October 9, 2002 when they retired Gretzky's number, but even that was a while ago.

Using a Seals uniform would honoring the history of hockey in the team's location (Bay Area), but the fact that it isn't a "Sharks" look really does hurt it (in the same way as the Canucks attempts to honor the Millionaires). I think a decent compromise would be a merging of the two identities/fauxback like this one done on here a few years ago by Ross:

While it's not that much better, it's still creative and classic enough to work against either of the purple/gold Kings looks (the Red Wings template version and the Flyers-inspired version).

How would that be perfect? They're the Sharks, not the Oakland Seals. Just like the Canucks are not Millionaires and the Senators have never won a Stanley Cup.

The new Senators are not the old Senators and the Canucks aren't the Millionaires.

The Sharks though? You could make the claim that they're the Seals reborn.

The Seals move to Cleveland, becoming the Barons before merging with the North Stars. This lasts until 1991. At that point the last Seals/Barons owners, the Gund family, got their portion of the North Stars franchise back and received an expansion franchise in the Bay Area. They were also allowed to take a number of North Stars players with them. It wasn't a traditional expansion process by any stretch of the imagination.

The argument is there to connect the Seals/Barons to the Sharks. They merged with the North Stars and then unmerged years later with the same ownership group in the same metro area they started in.

There's certainly more of a legitimate connection between the Sharks and Seals then there is between the examples you provided.

Sharks are in effect the progeny of the Seals. Seals moved to Cleveland and became the Barons for 2 seasons, and then merged with the North Stars where their owner (The Gunds) were the majority owner. Thirteen years later, the Gunds extracted their ownership interest out of the North Stars and assumed the new Sharks "expansion" team but took almost half the North Stars roster with them.

Sharks are about as tied to the Seals, as the Devils are to the KC Scouts.

EDIT: Ice_Cap beat me to it. Nothing to see here.

Plus connecting the Sharks to the Seals/Barons would mean that all of the "Next Six" expansion teams are still around. Which is neat.

On top of all of that there's the fact that the last incarnation of the Cleveland Barons AHL franchise was a farm team to the San Jose Sharks. Who gave us the greatest logo of all time :D

See? It all fits ;)

I just noticed the diamond on the butt end of the stick... OK, it really is the greatest logo ever.

Next people on here will be advocating the dropping of the Sharks monicker and going with Seals uniforms full time...

They didn't have a particularly good logo or uniforms... they only cool thing about them is that they barely existed and so nobody really knows about them.

That WAS suggested when Anaheim dropped "Mighty" from Mighty Ducks. The rebirth of the California Golden Seals was on the table.

I'll respect any opinion that you can defend.

If the Sharks have never connected themselves to Oakland or Minnesota or any other team, then I don't think it's time to start doing it. But yes they could have something based off the Seals if they wanted to, not that its going to happen anyways since the Stadium jerseys will probably have the same or mostly the same template.

That and in their short existence (1967-76) they changed their official name THREE times.

In '67 they started out as the :"California Seals" and then midway through the season changed their name to the "Oakland Seals." Then in 1970, they changed to the "California Golden Seals" when Charlie Finley bought them and put them in white skates.

They were the Angels before the Angels were the Angels.
