NHL Anti-Thread: Bad Business Decision Aggregator

It could have been worse they could have put Danny Heatley on the cover of a video game :P

To be fair, that wasn't an NHL decision.

Picking a cover athlete for NHL 2004 proved to be problematic. Joe Thornton was the original choice but after he was brought up on assault charges, he was removed and replaced by Dany Heatley for the game's first shipments. After Heatley's car crash that killed his Atlanta Thrashers team-mate, Dan Snyder, EA removed him and replaced the cover with Joe Sakic but not before a large number of units had already been shipped. As a result, both covers (Heatley and Sakic) made it into circulation.

So for the second time in three weeks, comments from Portland.

Trail Blazers President/CEO Chris McGowan confirmed that report, suggesting that billionaire owner Paul Allen (pictured) is intrigued at the thought of adding an NHL team to his pro sports portfolio that already includes an NBA franchise (the Blazers) an NFL team (the Seattle Seahawks), and an MLS club (Seattle Sounders).

McGowan says the Blazers “never made an offer” for the Coyotes, but that an extensive market analysis convinced Allen the NHL in Portland would be a positive move.

“I never got the sense that Paul wasn’t interested in the NHL,” McGowan says. “Paul has always been interested in things that are good for Portland and the arena. It’s our job to bring opportunities to Paul. The NHL is just one of those. Our analysis led us to believe that potentially a team could work here. We were in the mix when it related to Portland as a potential option, but it didn’t work out, so it becomes moot.”

I actually got a copy with Heatley on the cover for my birthday when it came out. Needless to say, it was pretty damn awkward.

Ryan Lambert is almost making sense:

The Board of Governors was supposed to sign off on the deal this week. As of this writing, that hasn't happened yet. Why? Well, according to Mike Sunnucks of the Phoenix Business Journal (who has been right about this kind of thing in the past despite the naysayers), citing two sources, "ome financing for the sale has either not been finalized or has dropped out of the deal." Which would be a problem since the deal has to be finalized by Aug. 5. It is, as of this publication, Aug. 2.

♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫

The Kings' fans last year used Here We Stay as a slogan to keep the team in town. It's different though because, their owners were openly sabotaging the team and the NHL are delusional in their efforts to keep the Coyotes in Phoenix.

BTW, just for everyone's lulz, this is the Coyotes marketing campaign for this season:

I've got to say the cynicism in that slogan is breathtaking when you remember the 5 year out clause.

The "owners" (I'll remove the quote marks once they actually own the team) said the Phoenix-to-Arizona changeover wouldn't happen until 2014-15. Because the NHL can't change the name of a franchise on such short notice, even though they were set to transplant the whole damn team two months before camps open.

#NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said approval of the #Coyotes sale will be pushed to Monday. Votes are coming via fax. Not complete yet.

Oh, and Arizona's assistant attorney general just inadvertently gutted his state's open meetings law to justify Glendale's meeting shenanigans.
