The 2017 NBA Playoffs: This Is A Recording

The NBA is quite likely going to end before the NHL.  Has that ever happened?  I feel like when I was a kid (80s-90s), there was a much larger gap between the two...in recent years, the finals tend to overlap but I don't recall the NBA ever finishing first.

All that good talent is on 4-5 teams.

I was having this conversation with a few friends today and none of us could think of a time when the league more than 5 legitimate contenders at the same time. We're all in our 30s so maybe we haven't been watching for long enough?

Last time it happened? Spurs swept Lebron and the Cavs in 07.

Friday is a terrible day for a championship clenching game. What happened to the typical Sunday-Tuesday-Thursday schedule?

They changed in 2015 because Sunday/Tuesday/Thursday works better under the old 2/3/2 format with travel, but still causes issues with just one travel day.

Now, they schedule the Finals over 17 days.

I was amazed when it dawned on me that none of those were at the hands of the Bulls. '91 was 4-1, but the other five were 4-2. That includes the '96 Sonics taking the 72-10's to 6 games. Those Bulls' series were a tad more competitive than you'd think when you really look at them.

It's shameful that in a series where LeBron's averaging a triple-double against the most stacked team ever and is clearly the best player on the court, the narrative is that Durant has passed him by as the league's best player. Never mind the fact that Durant isn't even the clear-cut best player on his own team right now.

Even worse is that after scoring 7 of the Cavs' 19 fourth-quarter points, we're back to the vintage 2011 Hot Takes that LeBron is a "choker" and "scared of the moment" because he passed to one of the best three-point shooters in the league. Seriously? If we're being honest here, the Cavs didn't lose because of anything LeBron did. They lost because LeBron couldn't even sit for two minutes without the Cavs getting outscored by double digits.

LeBron has been giving it his all in a series where his team never had a chance. He should be praised for playing with so much heart. Instead, this series is actually going to hurt his legacy! The NBA has the worst media and fans of any sport and it's not even close.

I am envious of your limited interaction with NFL fans.

I honestly don't understand the "KD is now the best player in the league" logic. KD is not the best player in this Finals series or in the NBA right now. Heck his teammates are the reason this stupid KD/LeBron comparison is even a thing. LeBron has had a much better series stat wise (Triple-Double), and has been pouring his heart into keeping the Cavs alive in this series. KD is just getting the credit for the wins by leading the scoring. I swear Curry has been doing more overall than KD has and hasn't really gotten much credit.

KD will probably get Finals MVP, and LeBron's legacy will be harmed, even though he's putting up the stats that he is. At the end of it all, LeBron still has more championships, more finals appearances and more Finals MVP's than anyone on that Warriors team.

We're stuck in a dire situation now. As much as I want to believe we can win four straight, we probably won't.  I just want at least 1 win, 2 would make it much easier to swallow. Heck 3 would be amazing at this point. LeBron's done his part, as has Kevin Love. Kyrie did good today. But we'll have to see if anyone else steps up.

Last night, he played 46 f'n minutes and his +/- was +7!

They still lost by 5.

It's only fitting that after a season of inevitability, we have an NBA Finals of inevitability after everyone thought it might be the best NBA Finals in history.

That distinction still belongs to last year.

Unless this one somehow goes 7.

I think this is the only thing I disagree with.  I think he is clearly the best player on his team and he's going to go down as probably the best scorer in league history.

Those Bulls series were indeed competitive for the most part. People especially remember '93, '97, and '98 due to the last second finishes. It was the greatness mixed with suspense that caused people to watch (and love) the Bulls.

Also many people tend to forget just how good those Sonics were. I believe they went 67-15, which would've been the best record in '96 had it not been for the Bulls.

Yeah it's definitely baseless hyperbole to say that Durant is better than Lebron, because he's absolutely not. Nobody is. But I will argue that there have been several stretches during this series where Durant has thoroughly outplayed Lebron. And that's not so much a knock on Lebron as it is to say that Lebron has had to do literally EVERYTHING this series at times, and the addition of Durant has put the workload just a tick above what even he can do. I mean, he BARELY pulled it out last year (which is a testament to just how damn good he is) vs a team that was one of the best ever. That team then went and swapped Harrison Barnes for Kevin freaking Durant. This shouldn't be a knock on Lebron at all. The fact that he got even ONE vs this team is downright legendary. It's akin to the Sonics/Jazz beating one of those mid 90s Bulls teams.
