2018 NFL Season

The thing that trips me out, though, is that if I remember correctly, Cassel's been a career backup since at least college...

(Which raises another question: has any other college career backup QB...or any other backup period... ever also been drafted?)

Wasn't Tom Brady a backup at Michigan?

Cowboys center Travis Fredrick out indefinitely due to Guillain-Barré Syndrome. A disorder in which your immune system attacks the body's peripheral nervous system.

Fewer than 20,000 Americans contract it annually.

Same thing Patrick Eaves from the Anaheim Ducks has.

For his first two years, if I remember right, behind Brian Griese. He started his last two years there (I think Drew Henson was the other QB there at the time.)

The thing with Cassel, though, is that he never started at QB at USC...he backed up both Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart, only to then back up Brady all those years in NE (save for the one season Brady was out). And yet here we are...

I ain't hating at all; I'm just genuinely amused at how the guy keeps getting signed as a backup team after team after team.

Funny how scouts thought Henson would be the better prospect. Maybe he could've; if he didn't play baseball for a few years.

While Brady has so many awards, and personal accolades; Henson had one moment in the sun. Following in the footsteps of Clint Longley and Jason Garrett, his best game was a Turkey Day game (against Chicago).

Pederson was a backup for seven Favre seasons.

Brunell, Hasselbeck and Rodgers would say they weren't space themselves in leading teams to the Super Bowl.

wasn't Scott Mitchell Dan Marino's backup before getting paid?  That's really the key to making money.

Henson was really talented, one of the last really all sport kids. He averaged 22 points/game in basketball, hit 70 HS home runs and was a HS All-America QB.

Then again, it was in Brighton, Michigan.

Matt Flynn started two games over four years in Green Bay, got a big contract from Seattle, and then immediately got beat for the starting job by Russell Wilson. He ended up getting paid $1.6M per pass attempt from Seattle.

Mitchell also had one year as a starter for Orlando in the World League, making the World Bowl but not winning it. That's how he earned his payday from the Lions.

Don't forget Rob Johnson.  One start in three years in Jacksonville turned into a trade for first and fourth round picks and a big contract with the Bills.

Henson dominated against schools where the best athletes played non-school affiliated hockey or soccer and didn't recruit players from Detroit. Put him in Ohio or Western PA and he's good but nowhere as good as he was in Brighton.

The AFC is pretty much New England and Pittsburgh.

The NFC could be won by Philly, Atlanta, Green Bay, Minnesota, New Orleans, Los Angeles...and possibly Carolina. Talk about parity.

Don't forget Jacksonville. I'm still into my hypothesis that Blake Bortles will be great now that his team isn't wearing bizarro, dual-toned, helmets.

Agreed, although I think they might come back down to earth this season. Them and Houston with a full season of Watson will be a dogfight for the division, and as weak as the AFC is, the loser will still be a wild card.

That was actually going down around four years ago during the NFL's Year of Hell. It's a shame it didn't come out then; I needed insider trading to win on my player personal conduct bingo card.

I'm really disappointed that Drew Magary couldn't control himself with today's Why Your Team Sucks about the Saints. I normally look forward to those, but couldn't finish today's.

Current Browns LB Mychal Kendricks has been indicted on charges of insider trading.

After the comment he made about how the Browns have a lot more talent ("and it's not even close!") than last years' Super Bowl Champion Philadelphia Eagles, I figured he'd be busted for crack rather than insider trading.

Quote

A committee of NFL owners has cleared the way for teams to sell sponsorships to casinos that operate sportsbooks, though the casinos will not be allowed to promote the sportsbooks directly in their advertising. A team source said the league’s business ventures committee agreed to relax league rules prohibiting sportsbook-connected sponsorship during a conference call on Monday. An NFL spokesperson declined comment. Casinos will not be able to promote the sportsbooks directly, but teams will be able to accept advertising from casinos and daily fantasy sites that operate sportsbooks in shoulder programming and during preseason game telecasts. Teams and casinos also will be able to use each others’ logos in their advertising and promotions. But teams will be prohibited from accepting revenue shares for driving business to casinos and gambling web sites. Teams also will be cleared to sell stadium naming rights to casinos, a consideration mostly in play for the Las Vegas-bound Raiders.
