I think he’ll give the Phillies a bit of a Home town discount.

Harper will switch to #3, fueling speculation that the Phillies will retire 34 for Halladay, which opens up a whole can of worms for them.

It’s business, home town discounts don’t apply for generational talents like him. I also don’t know what can of worms you are talking about with halladay. Are the Phillies one of those teams with like 20 requirements in order to have your number retired by them?

1) Trout has told people privately that he's going to figure out how to get to the Phillies, whether via trade or when he's FA.  Obviously there's a ton of variables at play but until he resigns with the Angles that's still a big possibility.

2) You need to be in the HOF.  That could be expanded to mean "as a Phillie", though that's never been explicitly stated.  Halladay is going in as "half a Phillie" (sorta), but probably wouldn't have had his number retired had he not died.  They've been around since the 1880s and have only retired 1, 14, 20, 32, and 36. While they're not the Yankees, there's still been a lot of significant players that have passed through - guys that on almost any other team would have been honored - but dumb candy ass jabronis wear their numbers now.

The can of worms is what they do with Jimmy Rollins, Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, and Cole Hamels.  While Rollins and Utley have a loooooooooong shot at making the Hall, it's not likely that any of them will be enshrined, but if Halladay's number is retired (after three other players have worn it) then how do you not retire the guys that actually won a WS?

I could see Utley having his number retired, and maybe Rollins... but Howard's career didn't last long enough, and Hamels is kinda a wild card, he's bounced around since Philly, and never really won any awards except some all star nominations since 2008

Hamels was the NLCS and WS MVP, and people forget that they didn’t even have Halladay or Lee when they won. He was a legit ace for years (though he did blow in 2009) and was very significant for the franchise, despite what he has or hasn’t accomplished since.

Howard was also a key piece of that ‘08 team - not that being a key piece (his nickname was literally “the big piece”) gets your number retired, but it’s one of those things where it might not make sense to the outside world but for us it does.

You got me - this is my dup account. You’re smart - you remind me of me as I started all my businesses, and that’s why I was recruited to be on everyone’s board of directors. You’ll never be as successful as me, because I’m so successful and know so much about business, but POLITICS!

Fair enough. I just hope you were able to get off before being exposed.

You forgot the bits about being really passive-aggressive towards your wife and low-key using abuser tactics to make sure she can't divorce you.

Speaking of abusers:

Video shows Giants CEO Larry Baer dragging wife to ground

Yikes. The excuse doesn't make it any better.

That's a bit "fell down some stairs" or "walked into a door."

Yeah the Chicago situation is interesting. I’ve never heard the white Sox as a big market team. I guess they’re more “regional”, meaning south side Chicago and limited fans throughout the rest while the Cubs are “chicagoland’s team”?  So maybe the Cubs media rights are worth a ton more than the chisox?  Maybe it’s the same with the Clippers and Angels?

Yeah, pretty much.

The Trout free agency after 2020 is going to be fun. Do the Phils even bother & there could be a lockout in 2021.

Define fun.

The newest Phillie also talked about the possibility of another All-Star coming to Philly.

“I'm making $26 [million] a year. That’s going to be able to bring some other guys in as well to build up this organization. There’s another guy in about two years that comes off the books," Harper hinted about Mike Trout. "We’ll see what happens with that."

What a turd. Harper just sold a billion tickets and jerseys. His contract will have paid for itself in no time.

it's so weird that a non-insignificant portion of the fanbase hates the guy because of his contract (as if they're the ones who pay him) and actively avoid trying to understand the value he brings to the lineup. He's underpaid at this point. Marty brainwashed a lot of the fanbase about the best Red since Larkin (he's probably better) and it sucks.

Fanatics said that more Harper jerseys were sold in the 24 hours post signing than any jersey for any athlete in any sport ever.

Should tampering between players be outlawed just like tampering is for management?  I totally understand tampering rules for management - that rule should never change - but players?  They're friends, in the same union, talk to each other off the field all the time.  It's impossible to control, and harmless, because they're just like "yo bro, sign with us!", and not "OK, we'll give you 1.2B in a few years if you come to us, plus an option, so don't sign that extension with your current team".

MLB gave Harper essentially a "cease and desist" for openly recruiting Mike Trout, and he was like "blow me, I talked to him all offseason, and I want to play with him", so now he just says (as recently as yesterday) "I'm dead serious about the player you know I'm talking about, I want him to come here and I know he wants to so I'm going to keep recruiting the player you know I'm talking about."  What's the point of blocking that between players

You can maybe say "don't say it on camera or in any public situation", and I guess I get that, because it can impact the fans of the recruited player, but overall it's a silly rule that's impossible to truley enforce.
