San Diego Padres 2020 Rebrand Discussion

I just wanted them to pick an identity regardless of what the color scheme was. I'm happy they finally chose to go with brown and I think it's the right move, but I wouldn't have hated if they'd adopted the blue/yellow look because at least that would've been something.

This, however, is nothing. It's as absent a brand as I've ever seen a Big 4 sports team wear. It's like if air were a sports uniform. I can't for the life of me understand why a team would choose to forego having an identity.

The road uniforms were a little better because of the uniqueness of the bowtie wordmark and the alternates were a little better just because they were a color and they allowed the unique piping to be seen, but still. Lifeless snooze of an identity that I can't imagine helped anybody get excited about Padres baseball.

I always found these uniforms super baffling. They weren't great before the All Star year and then they get even worse after.

Then the All Star year when they have one year in the middle where they could have done a real set incorporating the yellow throughout, but they only had the home uniform and the actual all star road alternate that they only wore in the all star game, but not on the road.

I don't know what the new brown jerseys look like, but the hat is already a huge improvement and the colors alone give this team a sorely needed identity again. The uniforms of the last 3 years were just, baffling. Crazy that someone thought that was a good idea.

Well they came from the mind of Mike Dee as I understand it... and he was not a baseball marketing genius. I mean who agrees to host the ASG but NOT have your league be the home team 🙄

The Padres have twice tried to mimic the simple elegance of the Dodgers' uniforms.  And boy, they failed both times.

No kidding. The Padres have tried to reflect and somewhat piggyback off of the Dodgers popularity, and frankly, I think almost everyone could see right through that. San Diego isn't Los Angeles, and from what I know of people in San Diego, they're SUPER put off by people trying to tell them that they are (And rightfully so, IMO). Letting them be a bit weird and march to the beat of their own drum is the only way they're going to be embraced by that fanbase. Moving back to a unique color palette that's exclusive to the city of San Diego is a GREAT way to start.

Not to mention San Diegans HATE it and have asked for years why we look like the Dodgers.

It's hard to say without seeing the uniforms yet, but I wonder what that brown hat would look like with some orange with the yellow. I don't know if an orange letter or what, but I feel the yellow and brown would benefit from some orange with it. The brown is good, the yellow is ok and then that's it. Pretty plain.

I can't agree. The orange ruined the original brown and gold look.

Let’s not get crazy. Adding orange muddied there look further in the 80’s and did nothing to help the uniforms look anything but garish.

One of the first uniforms I remember seeing and actually being angry about (I was in middle school). The 90s blue pinstripe home uniform is my favorite Padres look, and I did not understand why they switched to such a bland look.

What would be a good tertiary color? Do you like the plain-ness of the logo on the hat?

Brown & yellow, with white (no off-white, since it really clashes with yellow) or a lighter sand on the uniforms is all they need.

On top of that, stripping away outlines sand shadows just makes that wordmark look extra terrible.

A white S maybe like 91 and 16?

I think the white S would look fine. For it to work, I think you would need white outlines on the letters and numbers on the road uniform. I don’t see that being necessary.

No white S and yellow D. No. It only works on a dark background. If you outline or do anything else to try and make it work on a light background it gets overly complicated. Simple yellow S and D on brown and brown S and D, outlined in yellow, on white is perfect.

If you had a contrasting SD on the brown cap in white and yellow it would look great though IMO. No need to extend that anywhere else, though. They could keep that contrasting color SD logo strictly to the cap and use a brown SD outlined in yellow elsewhere and it would work just fine.

I am glad they went back to brown and yellow. It was a long time coming but honestly I would have preferred that they had taken the 2016 ASG blue & yellow and expanded on it as their new permanent identity.  On the home uniform I would have a nice navy padres script with yellow outline, same with the numbers and the swinging friar on the sleeve.  Maybe as a Saturday or Sunday alternate make a blue jersey with the swinging friar on the chest or interlock SD in yellow.  An alt swinging friar hat with a blue alt SD yellow interlock on Sunday or Saturday home games could have been pretty cool.   Then on the road a grey uniform with San Diego written across in navy with yellow trim.  Heck maybe even go Oakland A's with a yellow alt SD navy interlock with white trim.  Nevertheless I am anxious to see what brown and yellow will bring.

This!

If I seem extremely hesitant about brown it’s because they’ve already done blue very right in the 90’s and had the beginnings of right in 2016. And both times they walked away from it. Brown IMO has never been done particularly well with 69 and 85 being the only times they came close. I hope they can surprise us all, but their recent uniform decisions don’t give me a ton of confidence.
