Cleveland Indians become the Cleveland Guardians

Not a fan. Guardians sounds very bland, it sounds like an opponent from a mediocre sports movie.

Also I suspect it was only chosen because it's phonetically similar to "Indians". Which seems dumb to me, if you're going to change the name don't cling to it and hint at it as closely as possible. That's the same reason I wouldn't want the (Washington Football Team) renamed to Redwolves or Redtails or whatever. If you're going to distance yourself from the name, actually distance yourself.

Dan Gilbert buying the team and creating the Cleveland (Baseball) Cavaliers was still the best outcome. 😉

The best outcome would have been to name the team the Cleveland Clevelands, but I really like your idea too.

I think you're spot on here. Yes, they can point to the bridge statues, but without those a team would never, ever go for Guardians unless it was the bad guy in a mid-2000s football movie.

I don't think keeping "-dians" should have been any kind of guiding principle, but whatever. That's what they chose. I think it's fine. I like the moderate refresh of logos, and I appreciate that they made a decision and are going for it. They'll modify and tweak the logo through the years, so what's launching today is unlikely to be the dominant brand by the end of the decade.

Remember when the Washington Nationals looked like this?

That logo looks like it should be on top of a gas station in a small town that you pass through while on your way to somewhere better.

I guess in that sense, it’s really fitting!

We get it: you don't think much of Cleveland.  Is that your whole shtick?  Just posting in order to provoke Native Clevelanders like myself?  I happen to love where I live, and I am certain that there are others on this forum that would agree with me - as well as folks who have visited who have come away with a changed opinion of the city.  It's not your cup of tea: fine. Either post something relevant to the conversation or move on.

So by your own admission locals want to maintain as much as the visible history as possible with the rebrand. It seems like your position- they they go with green and move on from red, white, and blue- is a minority opinion.

It's important to remember that this website has a near-psychotic obsession with making sure every team has a unique color scheme. There's a not-insignificant portion that actually want one of the league's oldest teams to change their iconic color scheme of nearly a century because of a fence.

I've got a dribbble, check it out if you like my stuff; alternatively, if you hate my stuff, send it to your enemies to punish their insolence!

I guess it's an unpopular opinion, but I like the fastball logo. It's really the only element of this new brand that actually incorporates elements of the statues that inspired the name.

I don't think it belongs on the caps or anything, but as a tertiary logo it works.

Fellow Ohioan here. We could react like you did or....we can return fire. According to his profile, FiddySicks lives in Sacramento. It's not like the dude is dunking on Ohio from Honolulu. Sacramento is Cleveland with nicer weather, far less charm, and one almost NBA level basketball team. No one moves to California because they dream of living in Sacramento.

Lol, this is pathetically bad. The name is painfully generic (even with the “Traffic guards” thing or whatever, which is still SO lame), the wordmarks all suck and actually just remind me of a ripoff of the Brewers new look, the logos are AA level baseball amateurish, and they even kept the overused R/W/N color scheme 🤦🏼‍♂️They basically got every part of this wrong IMO.

Oh well, it doesn’t really matter. Cleveland has forever been an absolutely forgettable baseball franchise with a dumb name and boring colors. All they’re doing by changing to Guardians and picking this branding package is continuing that trend.

See, the best thing about the name is that it keeps up the American tradition of people who don't know :censored: about Cleveland telling people from Cleveland all about how much it sucks.

No sorry you’ve misunderstood me. I don’t hate Cleveland at all. I don’t love it, either. I really don’t give a single :censored: about Cleveland, either way. I usually forget that Ohio even has another large city other than Cincinnati. So trust me, just like the last time we had this convo, it’s not personal. I’m not hating on ya, skip 🙂

Im just saying that the branding package is hokey as all hell, and it replaces a branding package that was already hokey as all hell.

In fact, I’m bummed about this for the very opposite reason you’re mad at me about. Going with a name like Spiders and using some new colors, IMO, would elevate that franchise and give it a unique flair. Something even non Clevelanders would be interested in. All this does is move things sideways (or even further back) the n terms of outside interest.

I live in Lake Tahoe (Which is a mic drop even on Honolulu) but great try! 😂

Looks like they're going with a custom number font

I had missed this earlier, but I'm disappointed that it looks like they won't be fixing the silliest mistake in the current brand, which is navy letters and numbers on the away jersey. They've used both over time, and I think the current road jersey is modeled after the '54 set that did use navy, but red numbers and letters like they used in the late '40s have always been my preferred variant — it leans much better into the whole "navy and red" team that the franchise has long been, rather than a navy-dominant team.

I’m glad it wasn’t Municipals. Or Rockers. Or Naps, Fellers, Forests, Foresters,  Rocks, Steamboats, Steamers, etc. So many bad names could’ve happened.

Had Rockers happened, I might have gone to Cleveland to take a dump on the lawn of the RRHoF. Those dummies don’t want Iron Maiden in their museum? Screw ‘Em.

Yeah...it's a mentality I never got.

"The Red Sox should wear green instead of blue."

That seems so ridiculous to me but some people insist on it because of...as you said...a fence.
