If the Reds dropped every ounce of black but kept everything else, their current uniforms would be outstanding, but as of now they're meh

Based on that Seattle teaser, I'm guessing they're gonna be rolling out a dark grey/charcoal City Connect. They dropped the regular road grey this offseason, so it makes sense they'd do that if they knew the CC would be on the grey scale.

Doesn’t appear to be the case based on the leaks. Looks like it may be loosely inspired by the Pilots with some stripes and mountain iconography. So far we have seen socks and a t-shirt.

A few more looks at the Braves.

Overall, I like it. It’s about as nice as I could have hoped for under the label of “City Connect” which has resulted in too many dumpster fires. So given that context, these are more than fine. I love how the underbrim of the cap is green and has the “Keep Swinging #44” tribute.  On that same pic that shows the green underbrim, you can see how it looks like the feather pattern is inside the cap.

My critiques: I don’t love how it literally says “The.” I would prefer a standard white panel cap instead of the bell shape. I don’t think anyone is buying that the sleeve designs are “crowns” seeing as they still look like the top of the feather that this uniform was known for.

Also, the color balance of the cap feels off.

It’s still a perfectly fine looking cap, but the original uniform has a red logo, hence why things feel unbalanced.

This is really really good. First City Connect of the year and we already have a good one.

I strongly disagree, but to each their own. These are bottom tier City Connects because they are basically lesser versions of the Braves throwbacks. I feel like this is the first design that closely clung to existing design elements.

I like those Braves throwbacks but if you see these on the field, you just wish they'd be wearing the throwbacks instead.

Anyway, these feel like the laziest City Connects we've seen thus far. Major thumbs down from me.

My favorite cap ever is the all red cap with the wishbone C. The current one is only slightly different with the black drop shadow, but it completely ruins it.

I think it was @Sport said that they should’ve been a red and white version of the Dodgers and I couldn’t agree more.

The "codes" at the start are references to different things in Pirates history. The shot at the end is a pretty ubiquitous shot of Pittsburgh. So, really, I don't know what we can get from it, if anything.

My prediction is the name on the front will say "The Burgh" and the uniform won't be going for a "Steel City" type theme (like this Pitt uniform, for example). Other than that... I have no clue. There are a lot of different ways they could go. Hopefully we get more clues over the next three months.

It looks like the color theme will be "skyline at twilight", so maybe expect a primarily-black base with gold and light blue (maybe a little red or orange?) in it.

I wonder if Nike still plans to have the entire league rolled out by the end of 2024. By my count, there are still 10 teams remaining, which means 2024 will be a very City Connect-heavy season if so.

I think many if not all of the remaining teams have said theirs is coming in '24.  I know that the Phillies have.

The Rays may not have said it officially, but the local beat writer for the team reported it last year when talk of dropping the gray jersey started.

Since we only have 6 teams releasing their City Connects this season, we'll have 10 teams needing to release their jerseys in 2024. With Nike wanting to keep releases at least a week apart and done within the first half of the season, I just think it's unrealistic that we get all 10 City Connect jerseys in 2024. That'd require them to change a fundamental part of the City program, which I don't see happening.

This whole program was initially slated to be released over 3 seasons anyway, so I wouldn't be shocked if Nike extends the releases again, with this one being until 2025.

If the Atlanta release and the Seattle leaks are a sign of things to come, and the City Connect series is turning into something more retro-branding inspired than city-inspired, then I could see myself enjoying this program way more than I have to this point.

Yeah that was me and I still believe that. They were the last team to drop their pullovers and sansabelt pants and rather than embracing their pre-pullover look like most teams did, they chose to redesign to a vest and pinstripes look with silly white hats. If they'd just readopted the 1970 uniforms as the Good Dude intended then I don't know if we would've had the BFBS Reds.

Here's the good part, though - it's not too late. And I think an overwhelmingly high percentage of Reds fans would love if the team dropped the 90's drop shadows and went back to being a strictly red/white team.

Yeah these are fine:

If they want an alt - and JUST as an alt - as a way to force some black in there to sell more stuff, they could bust out something like this, but with the wishbone C (but it's totally not necessary, nor is a red softball top.)

This is the best the Reds have ever looked.

Cincinnati Reds on Twitter: "November 15, 1995: Barry Larkin is named NL MVP after already earning both the Silver Slugger and Gold Glove at shortstop. He batted .319, stole 51 bases, recorded a .980 fielding percentage and was named an All-Star while ...

The Reds are one of a few teams that have two perfect identities and I wouldn't be mad at either.  Either the Big Red Machine set or the pinstriped 90's and 60's vest set.  Either would be beautiful.

If it was meant to be over three seasons, doesn't that mean they planned for 10 uniforms in a season?  So it wouldn't be too out of left field.

Which was an awesome look; the Reds are the only team who looked good in vests, whether in the 1950s or the 1990s.

Frank Robinson of the Cincinnati Redlegs swings at the pitch during batting practice as his teammates Johnny Temple, Don Hoak and Gus Bell look on...

Yow.  The white pinstriped hats are beautiful, even better than the plain-white-crowned hats of the late 1950s.

Nevertheless, I do agree that simply restoring the pre-1972 look would have been the a great move after the disease of pullovers and beltless pants was excised from baseball.

Right.  And look how good a mature Johnny Bench looks in a button-down version of the uniform, at an old-timers' day soon after he retired.

Catcher Johnny Bench of the Cincinnati Reds poses with St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Bob Gibson before the All star game July 14, 1970 at Riverfront...

(The Getty Images caption claims that this photo is from the 1970 All-Star Game.  I don't think so.  For one thing, both Bench and Bob Gibson look too old for this to be 1970.  For another, Gibson famously hated All-Star Games because he refused to fraternise with opposing hitters. The only time Gibson would be smiling and palling around with a hitter would be after his career was over.)

I don't think that this follows.  As @BBTV has demonstrated, the C logo was filled in with black in the early 1960s.  The Reds might very well have done that again anyway in the late 1990s, no matter what style they were wearing.

Honestly, notwithstanding my strong preference for the early-1990s look, and my placing of the early-1970s look as a close second, I would agree that just removing the black from the current set would make that set a great one.  (Note that here I am referring only to the white home jersey with the piping, and to the grey road jersey.  That awful red jersey with the "Reds" script is irredemable.)  The old-timey lettering suits the team well.

Man, that uniform Pete Rose is wearing in the picture above is simply perfect. Just gorgeous. Stirrups and all.

@Ferdinand Cesarano I think the Pirates pulled off the vest uniform too.

Yes, if there is another team that can claim vests, it would be the Pirates.

Also, from a purely ahistorical standpoint, I wouldn't call the Marlins' vests ugly, as I would call the Rockies' vests.  But vests just strike me as Reds feature that, ideally, no one else should use.  Still, if it's just the Reds and the Pirates, then I wouldn't really mind too much.  I just don't think that vests should be a standard design element available to any team, like, let's say, pinstripes.
