To see this process play out for soccer clubs in North America is wonderful. Everyone knows what team you are referring to when you say the Red Devils or the Magpies (even if colour names such as the Blues and the Reds have many possible referrents); likewise, we are getting to the point where we can speak with the same ease of the Pigeons playing the Lions.

I love these organically developing nicknames, but no club in the MLS is anyhere near the level of the Red Devils or Magpies in terms of nickname recognition. These nicknames are still too new/young to be common knowledge for fans of other teams. For example, I had no clue NYCFC's developing nickname is the Pigeons (which I love). I only knew of Toronto's, Atlanta's and Minnesota's (aside from LAFC obviously). I knew of Orlando's "Lions" nickname, but my first thought when I hear "Lions" is of the Detroit Lions.

One of my favorite things about working for Sac Republic was seeing an ill fated April Fools joke started by a goofy front office guy turn out the nickname “The Quails” and watching it develop to the point where it’s commonplace now.

Their supporters' group is called "The Third Rail," so I hope they have a Gadsden flag parody with train tracks that says "Don't Piss On Me"

Would have loved them to go the old NASL route and pick up the Sockers names, but that's already taken by a local MASL team. Leaning into a Mexican-inspired club name/imagery would be a nice touch, although a "Club San Diego" is a bit generic. Maybe an Atletico/Club Atletico name? Or lean into the SoCal roots and go with San Diego Sol?

Whatever name they go with, there's enough cultural heritage in SD to get a brand that's visually impactful and connects locally, as long as they don't over-corporatize it. I'm a proponent for a bright and bold color scheme with some Mexican visual elements included, given the city's proximity to the border and heavy Latino presence.

Tell Salt Lake to :censored: off and take the Real name from them. SD deserves it more.

there was an LA Sol (previous women's pro soccer league team) btw, but San Diego Sol could be a fitting name regardless IMO.

Couldn't agree more with the bolded part above
