The polygamist Mormons actually live in far northern Arizona.

Yeah, the LDS officially ended the practice of polygamy back in 1890 and then the church leader disavowed polygamy before Congress in 1904.

Sects of Mormon fundamentalism, most prominently the FLDS, still practice polygamy but they aren't part of LDS proper.

What sort of jobs do the Warren Jeffs people have? I know most Utah Mormons just grind away as financial planners and accountants and stuff, but how do you afford building a giant house for your six wives in remote Arizona?

The YFZ Ranch was in Texas, IIRC.

Make shoddy parts for the space shuttle? I bet you didn't know the connection between the FLDS and the Challenger tragedy.

It was, but I think they still have a polygamist community up on the Arizona /Utah border.

Did not know that about the space shuttle. Well, take "Challengers" off the nickname list.

Back when I used to drive between Utah (school) and Idaho (home), I’m pretty sure each time I was driving by a polygamist farm somewhere between Plymouth and the Idaho border. I recognized some of the farm structures from a news story on polygamists.

Yeah, that's a different sect of polygamists unrelated to the FLDS. The Kingston Clan is definitely as messed up as the Jeffs/FLDS group.

Blizzard, Fury, Venom, Yetis.  Seriously, it’s the NBA expansion version of Heat, Magic, and Thunder.  F- choices.

Agreed, all terrible choices.  They can do better.

Pioneers is probably out because people will say it's white supremacist (but again, this team is implicitly for the gentile transplants anyway, i.e., not pioneer stock).

I said "Salt Barons" as a joke but I'll be damned, that's the best I can do. It's still better than women's-indoor-soccer-league-ass Fury and Venom.

If you're not going to go with Eagles or Grizzlies, then I say go with Gulls. I know a lot of people would question that but it is the state bird. Or go with the state animal, Elk. Any of those four are simple and solid.

I am in this same boat. I am not a fan of the Utah Elk, but the Utah Gulls works on both levels of being the state bird and being the name of a past MiLB team. Just don't know how easy it would be to wrestle from San Diego?

Gulls are seabirds and Salt Lake City is about as far from any watershed as possible. Did they become the state bird by clerical error or do they just really dig the Great Salt Lake?

There you go: Utah Brine Shrimp. Brandiose is already on it.

We've got another potential Utah name trademarked: Utah Outlaws, per detroithockey.net.

"Outlaws" isn't the first thing to jump out to my mind when I think "Utah," and it might be a tad generic, but Butch Cassidy is from Utah, so there's at least something here. IMO this name does has a lot of potential going for it, especially if they channel imagery from his "Wild Bunch" photo, using something like a guy in a bowler hat instead of a generic cowboy hat (which I've always thought would be a great direction to take an Outlaws team identity no matter the location):

(Yoinked from Wikipedia)

I'm not too thrilled by the other choices, but "Yetis" does have alliteration going for it, despite the yeti being a creature of Asian origin--I don't hate it. This is due to how well the Seattle Kraken's identity was put together, despite Seattle not exactly being a hotbed of Norse mythology. It also seems that I've seemed to have some Bigfoot/Yeti imagery used locally in businesses, not just for winter sports but for general outdoorsy recreation. Of course, that could just be a form of the Mandela effect on me, but I swear that I've seen more of that in the last decade or so.

"Venom" has potential and could have use of any venomous creature--snakes, bees/wasps/etc., lizards, spiders--all of which inhabit all parts of Utah in one capacity or another, but I'd much rather narrow that focus onto something like "Stingers," "Vipers," or "Spiders." Either that, or save Venom for a local AHL affiliate (if Utah were to acquire and bring in a closer affiliate a few years down the road).

Whatever the team is called, I really hope that the colors channel some of the late 1990s/early 2000s Jazz colors. I don't mind using a black base if the pattern/other colors compliment it  (just like how the other uniform elements worked with the black base of the Coyotes Kachina jerseys), but all I ask is that there's some thought as to the colors. If I had to guess what colors were to be picked, I'd go Black/Light Blue or Black/Purple. though I would add some Copper to either of those pallets. Either that, or do Purple/Light Blue/Black. In the event a bee-themed logo is picked, I would still try to add a third color--probably Copper or Light Blue--to what would likely be a Gold/Black color scheme to differentiate from Boston and Pittsburgh (though a Black/Creamsicle Orange color scheme could be another way around that).

Anyways, are we still at least expecting team colors this week?

I can’t explain why, but there are gulls all over the place along the Wasatch front. It could be both the Great Salt Lake and Utah Lake (along the southern end of the Wasatch) that attracts them, but in any case, they’re very prominent here and not at all random. I see flocks of them on my walk to work every day.

In addition to the high population here, there is “The Miracle of the Gulls” in state history where, in 1848, large flocks of gulls swept in and ate crickets who were devouring a large number of pioneer crops along the Salt Lake Valley, saving what crops were left and preserving the pioneers’ food source. That’s more often attributed to the reason the gull is the state bird, but there are plenty gulls here to justify it outright.

I could get on board with the Utah Screaming Eagles.

Buying the Grizzlies IP is still my first choice.

There’s a fan event tomorrow at the arena. I’m doubting they announce colors or anything but that would be nice. Introducing the players and coach and stuff like that.
