In Smith’s defense, his taste in logos and typography seems to be much more minimal from what I can gather. The Jazz logo and word marks, as well as a lot of thier CounterPoint streetwear merch series, are more minimal in design. Where Smith goes galaxy brain is in color choices, and if I had any worries whatsoever about the brand, it’d be in the potential for a bad color scheme. In all honesty, I don’t think a potential logo for this team is going to be excessively detailed and certainly not AI-esque. I think - key word, think - Smith will keep the logo(s) more simple than not.

I think with all the backlash he got from the Jazz rebrand he will have learned his lesson. He’s a smart guy and does listen to feedback. The Jazz didn’t wear the yellow jersey for the 2nd half of the season because people (not me) hated it so much.

No idea if it's related to Smith or the NHL, but the following were recently registered with the USPTO for the purpose of ice hockey exhibitions:
  • Utah Venom
  • Utah Blizzard
  • Utah Fury
  • Utah Hockey Club
  • Utah HC

This could just be speculators filing trademarks in hopes of a payday in the event one of these names is eventually chosen.

The trademark applications are registered to a company called Uyte LLC, which only registered as a company in Deleware on April 2, 2024. The address and phone number listed on the application belong to the law firm, and attorney, that filed the application.

Smells like opportunists.

That was my gut feeling but squatters rarely put this many layers of anonymity in place.  That Washington Redwolves guy, for example, ran it through an LLC but the mailing address was his home address.  This is through a newly-created LLC and a large (therefore probably not cheap) law firm, and that LLC is using CT to anonymize their registered agent.

I'm not saying that means it's Smith, just that it's more interesting than I initially thought.

And Utah Fury is apparently the name of a team in one of those hockey romance books, which is the same issue the Seattle Sockeyes name ran into, so that's just kind of funny to come across it again.

Sounds like there's no timeline on a name. Smith says they'll likely start the season wearing generic "Utah" uniforms. Probably no nickname until year 2. Colors should be announced soon.

Doubleday and Cartwright is the firm working on the brand.

Huge fan of Doubleday & Cartwright! They knocked it out of the park with the Bucks and Inter Miami. I’m a little bummed we’re going to be generic “Utah” for a year, but 1) I understand wanting to take time to get it right, and 2) that wait will be worth it if D&C work the same magic they’ve done before.

I seriously doubt they'll wait until year 2 to have a name and logo.

The Thrashers relocation got announced almost a month later than this one, and the Jets still managed to have their logo & jerseys ready in the summer. I understand wanting to get the brand right, but being a generic NHL team for a year feels like a terrible way to make a good first impression on a new market, especially when they're already going to be playing in an arena that wasn't designed for hockey.

Oh God they're going to subject us to a year of "Lol the Stars are playing Hockey Team 😜" before we even get to whatever terrible collective noun they choose as a name

We can only hope they look that good 😄.

The last name that was picked for a NHL expansion franchise was the Seattle Kraken. Whatever name the Utah team picks, I’m sure it will be terrible and reflect the unserious nature of the league they’re in.

Or they'll be the Oklahoma City Thunder of the NHL and be stuck with whatever they pick for the next 20 years.

The "Winnipeg Jets" name and IP was owned by the Yotes and was past along to the NHL when the Yotes went into bankrupncy. One of the reasons they took the name is they were able to just buy the IP from the league.

I am a business owner and the process of registering trademarks has become slower and more complicated in recent years.

If they wanted to get a name quickly, I think the best thing they could do would be to buy an existing IP like the "Utah Grizzlies" (ECHL team). Although it sounds like their owner wants a unique brand.

Their owner (who also owns the Jazz) hinted he wants uniformed branding with that team and something representative of the SLC market. I am going to speculate that they will go with purple.

Utah [Jazz] HC - it's informally happening!!

Seriously though, he can displace the dumb minimalist Jazz concepts to the ice and let the Jazz look like the Jazz.

The colors might not be as unique in the NHL...but Penguins, Bruins, and Golden Knights don't use HIGHLIGHTER yellow!

Four years and eleven months from now, Gary Bettman announces a five year extension for the Coyotes to get an arena deal done, saying 'he believes in the Phoenix market' and 'this time, they're really close to an arena deal.'

Nine years and eleven months from now...
