2024-25 NHL Changes

If you go "Black Diamonds" and work off Smith's color scheme remarks, there's something to be made of purple, sky blue, black, and sparkle silver. Maybe you could ape the '90s Jazz a little and make the hem striping evoke a mountain range and... Crap, I just realized I'm making the Colorado Avalanche on a bad monitor.

For all the bird de lis haters I think the bird de lis isnt supposed to be a pelican and a fleur de lis I think its just a fleur de lis with a pelicans head. Thats what it looks like to me. Black Diamonds is compelling.

One more "Soakers" joke and I start trying to give adults shaken baby syndrome.

I didnt get Black Diamonds when I first read it... but now that I get it I think it could be a really cool identity.

I mean, I live in a ski resort town. I LOVE the name Black Diamonds. That should’ve been the name of our team instead of “Knight Monsters”.

But this is the NHL. It’s gonna be the Yetis.

Utah has a long tradition of borrowing from Denver on the NBA side of things, so I guess it's just as well that they start doing it with hockey and the perils of snow-covered mountains, too.

This is going to be so disappointing.

Hockey is a kitschy sport. It's Canadian, played on ice by folks wearing sweaters. Everyone's nickname is just their last name with a 'y' added on. The Good Ol Hockey Game. Bubble hockey and Hockey Night in Canada. It's all so beautifully kitschy. The league should have team names that match that vibe.

North Stars, Whalers, Nordiques, Metropolitans/Sockeys/Totems/Emeralds. Instead we have Wild, Hurricanes, Avalanche, Kraken.

Even the name Golden Knights has some kitschy vibes (not the identity itself, however).

Black Diamonds would be a welcome choice. But it'll be the Utah Yetis. Or worse.

Wait until I tell you where the Utah Grizzlies came from.

I understand the whole concept of Black Diamonds, but I feel it instantly invokes a gambling/cards/Vegas vibe, no?

Nah - it's a skiing thing. Playing card diamonds are red.

I understand I'm being totally pedantic with the response, but I think it would be a reach to go from Black Diamonds to Vegas/gambling.

It could, but diamond in cards are red, but I do see the correlation. They would need to do a LOT of story telling on the identity I think for people to get it. Just to distance themselves from the Vegas ideas, but it could be a super cool identity if worked right.

I've always pushed for a retro ski vibe for one of the mountain-region MLS teams but it would work for hockey too. Maybe even better, as a winter sport. Especially at this current moment where REI-chic is still pretty on-trend. Maybe he got a focus group to tell him that the practice-jersey Jazz was simply too galaxy-brained to work.
