2024 NFL Changes

Recommended Posts

It's definitely possible that some redesigns are done with the intention of only using the look temporarily. Sure, some teams want to keep their iconic looks for the sake of tradition and the brand, but do we really think the Titans, Falcons and Commanders are gonna look like this in 20 years?

If every team just went with its most popular, successful uniform set permanently, there wouldn't be much hype or excitement regarding offseason uniform unveils, announcements for throwbacks/alternate dates, etc. Teams would just look their best all the time, which would be a good thing visually but also eliminate a lot of mystery and excitement.

As far as the actual Broncos rumours go, there's some details that sound awful, others that actually sound good if done properly.

The biggest issue I have is the alleged white helmet. Whether its Navy or Royal blue, I think Denver belongs in a blue helmet/orange jersey/white pants uniform.

I'm gonna go off on a tangent here that will make me seem like a conspiracy theorist, but what if the NFL/Nike's prerogative is to design bad/mediocre uniforms on purpose so that they can turn around, pull them 5 years later, and milk more money from fans with a new, more popular set? It's happening with the Jets and Lions where they introduced generally mixed or unpopular uniforms, only to scrap them relatively early on in their lifespan in favor of more fan-favorite looks (i.e. Jets' modern "collegiate" look to the "Sack Exchange" throwback uniforms). The last couple of redesigns from the Cardinals and Commanders seem like they may be set up for the same fate. There have been rumors swirling around the Titans too, although its for sure not gonna happen this year.

Was the Lions current set unpopular? While not perfect, I thought it was a huge improvement over the two sets that came before it. The all-gray was the worst part, and then the blank white pants being introduced late in its life cycle also weren't great, but other than that it was their best look since the Barry Sanders era set. It was definitely good enough IMO that I'm dreading the new set, fearing that there's a reasonable chance it will be downgrade.

The Yankees literally just changed their jerseys.  In fact, the all of MLB is now using a “new & improved” uniform from Nike (that some players have vocally rejected).  This new style means a whole new line of replicas.

It’s a longstanding model Nike uses.  It’s a product cycle.

In the NFL, Nike has gone through 3 templates in 10 years.  While the basic “Game” jersey replica hasn’t changed, the “Limited” and highest end replicas have.  Not to mention, the teams that care about their iconic looks (Chiefs, Steelers, Raiders, Packers, Cowboys) have all resisted change, but all of those, except the Chiefs, have embraced alternates and/or throwbacks.

Cha-ching.

We’re talking about designs here, not templates. The Yankees still look like the Yankees, and people are buying jerseys to have a new players jersey not because the design changed.

I didn't like how the set (at least with the home) had little white, especially when the color is as present as it is in the logo. Honolulu blue and silver blend in too much when they are together, and the anthracite grey did not work well enough as a number outline color to separate the two. The Northwestern stripes also needed some white to make them pop.

It wasn't all that bad of a uniform. It just needed a little more color insertion (and color removal in the case of anthracite grey).

The Ravens didn’t even wear the CR this past season, so I’d imagine it’s dead. Which is good, but I will miss it a little bit.

Nah, they also inexplicably skipped wearing their 'ColoRush' uniforms in 2020, too — even after starting out with an undefeated 4–0 record when wearing them from 2016–2019 — but then they returned for both the 2021 & 2022 seasons (two close & inexcusably stupid, costly coaching decisions, which caused those losses vs. GB & vs. BUF), respectively.

In fact, the same thing happened after they debuted the beautiful black jersey with purple pants uniform in 2018. For no apparent reason, it vanished for the next two years — despite a monumental ending in the waning moments of a division-sealing victory via C.J. Mosley, which broke a streak of narrowly missing out on the playoffs over the previous three seasons.

However, that one has been worn once per year during the last three consecutive seasons. Now, it too is an undefeated 4–0, just like the 'CR' formerly was following its first four appearances on field.

Further worth mentioning is the fact that only in the 2018 & 2021 seasons have the Ravens actually trotted out in all ten of their currently existent mix-and-match uniform combinations.

For instance, besides no 'CR' last season, we additionally have not seen my least favorite look of the entire bunch — save for the recent ruining of the white jersey & white pants combo by pairing it with plain white socks/tights instead of black — for a couple of years.

That which I am referring to would be the black jersey with white pants combo. I personally prefer it that way (shelved), since I feel that both other black combos are better, plus for whatever reason the black on white had become a frequent loser in recent seasons.

I don't know why people refuse to blame the teams themselves when they don't like a uniform. The teams are the clients. Nike works for them and has to deliver what they want. The Commanders' uniforms suck because Dan Snyder's wife designed them herself. They would suck exactly the same if Adidas or Reebok or Under Armour was the supplier instead.

Reverting back to a throwback uniform is just the current fad. And look at who's doing it. The Jets are definitely only switching to throwbacks so Woody can pander to fans while fielding the most embarrassing product in the NFL.

That's not even a sports-specific thing.  See: Burger King, Subway, Pizza Hut, Pepsi.

I'm starting to think the NFL wants to copy soccer, but can't talk themselves into swapping out uniforms every 1-2 years like soccer teams do now. That's why they have the 5 year rule, with the caveat that it can be tossed out under that time if someone else buys the team.

Say, when DID the NFL implement the 5-year rule anyway? The Patriots changed jerseys three times in three years from 1993-95, so I'm guessing it was after. I'm sure Goodell and his cronies would LOVE to bring that rate of change that the Patriots used to today's league, however.

In the meantime, I'm still waiting on the Commanders' re-brand...

I'd say probably about the same time Nike took over the contract.

Props to @WSU151 for the info... The following teams appear to have new Alternate helmets coming this year-

* Ravens

* Vikings

* Broncos

* Lions

* Packers

* Giants

* Jets

* Jaguars

* Texans

I have to assume the Jets will have a new black helmet to match the new uniforms. Vikings likely white to wear at their whiteout game

I actually think most of that came when Reebok got the exclusive contract with the NFL? If not then, when they made the “one helmet rule”, so yeah, you might be right.

I can imagine that teams want to switch jerseys every ten-ish years or so (gotta sell jerseys) and might therefore prioritize more current trends over more conservative/conventional designs, but I'm doubtful newer designs are intentionally bad. I do remember reading something (not sure if it's true) that teams like the Saints keep mediocre primaries over more liked alternates as it's better to sell two jerseys (primary because it's the primary and alternate because it looks good) than only one (primary that also looks good).

It was 2002 when the rule was established, the same year Reebok took over.

The important part from the NFL's bylaws:

Quote

Third, be it Further Resolved, that a Club may not change its regular home and away uniforms more than once every five NFL seasons, and may not change its third uniform design more than once every five NFL seasons, absent specific extenuating circumstances (e.g., Club ownership change or relocation) as determined by the Commissioner.

My initial thought on the Packers is a white “Frozen Tundra” helmet with green/gold/green stripes…though if alt helmets must be used with alt jerseys, this would likely be an updated throwback helmet (maybe with faux-leather details or something) as I'm sure the current blank gold shell with gray facemask doesn't sell well at all.

The Giants might be creating a 60s-style ny navy helmet solely for the team’s 100th season/anniversary in 2024-25 (i.e. a new helmet for probably one game just by swapping decals on the navy throwbacks)….

I was considering the Giants might be adding a white helmet, but after more thought, I don't think this is the case; that would mean the navy helmets would be gone under the current two-shell rule, and the 80s throwbacks can't die out for a few more years.

I think it's been posted on here before...but a possibility for the Ravens helmet is a "flash" metallic paint job (like the Jets 2019-23 helmets) that is purple/black, giving it that raven-esque look.

All of this is speculation - wish I had good info for any of these on the list.

Jaguars? Would they really do a teal helmet with the black jerseys? Not sure I buy it.
