KCScout76
I was watching a press day interview with the Packers team, "What does the "G" on the Packers helmet stand for?"The G actually stands for Greatness. Apparently, equipment manager George Dad Brashier thought up and designed the logo in 1961.And greatness is what legendary Coach Vince Lombardi brought to the Green Bay Packers. Lombardi coached the Pack to NFL championships in 61, 62 and 65, as well as victories in the first two Super Bowls.Of course, the Packers also won NFL titles in 1929, 1930, 1931, 1936, 1939 and 1944. And Super Bowl XXXI in 1996. In case youre counting, that equals 12 championships.Heres to lucky No. 13 on Sunday! And now you know! (I didn't until yesterday).Go Packers!!!! illwauk
Now that you mention it, I vaguely remember hearing about this before. I guess that takes care of my criticism that it says "G" and not "GB." Between this and pro combat technology bringing back the sleeve stripes, I won't have any reasons to complain about their unis (although I still say they should go back to the original Lombardi-designed look). O.C.D
That seems like someone wanted to attach that as an after thought. Pretty cheesy.
Still MIGHTY
That seems like someone wanted to attach that as an after thought. Pretty cheesy.Exactly.What if it was designed as an E for Excellence instead?Would the Green Bay Packers still have it?Probably not. | ANA | LAA | LAR | LAL | ASU | CSULB | USMNT | USWNT | LAFC | OCSC | MAN UTD |

jaha32
I've heard this before and still wondered whether it was true or something someone made up. But regardless I told some of my non-Packer fans friends recently that it stood for Greatness and no one believed me! This helps back me up. BlueSky
I'm still having trouble believing it.Why? It sounds like a plausible explanation for why they only have 'G' and not 'GB.' What if the Niners just had 'S' or the Chiefs 'K' and no reason for it? That would look pretty goofy, wouldn't it? My only hesitation is, why isn't this a well-known story? Not to mention it'd be pretty friggin' easy to execute a "GB" in that same oval, so why didn't they?
BBTV
I had also heard that the "NY" on the Giants helmets isn't for "New York", but for "Not Yours". Back in the '50s, players would routinely get their helmets confused and have to ask "who's helmet is this?" QB Charlie Conerly was sick of answering, so he wrote "It's Not Yours" on his helmet. Eventually it was shortened to just "NY". After he was accidentally run over and killed by a trolly, the team decided to put "NY" on all the helmets in his honor. Also, the wings on the Eagles helmets aren't bird wings - they're angel wings. CubsFanBudMan
I always heard it stood for Georgia. And Grambling. And Geneseo. And probably several other high schools. Really, that G can be anything you want it to be.

Pretty cheesy.i agree. this wouldnt work if the teams name/city didnt start with a G. you couldnt justt put a V on the helmet and say "it stands for victory, so we're gonna use it".
