Don't Stop Believin'? Giants have won 7 straight and are now 5 back in the West and Wild Card. What looms large is a 3 game series next week in Zona. Also, see what happens when you score: 6 runs a game during streak. Still, though it's frustrating looking back how we dug ourselves in a hole losing to the likes of the Astros and Cubs.

Here comes that weird and stupid time of year where the previous 5 months of baseball suddenly become important and some random teams will catch fire and win the thing. Yay.

I'm hoping the pirates break the schneid next year and get a wild card or something. I'm a cynical cubs fan myself, but even I want the pirates faithful to be even slightly redeemed for their dedication.

losing to the likes of the Astros and Cubs.

 we're 15 games up on the Astros I WILL HAVE YOU KNOW

Here's our record against sub par teams this year:

Astros 3-4

Cubs 3-4

Reds 2-5

Nationals 3-4

Marlins 2-4

To be fair SF is like 39-23 against their division so at least we've taken advantage in that department.

Ultimately though, it's frustrating that we didn't take advantage of it when we were playing those types of teams.

While I agree it is frustrating that we performed down to those teams, it didn't help that we got absolutely shellacked with injuries all year. To still be in contention (albeit barely) with ten games to go, considering the circumstances, makes me feel better.

Not really. There is realistically one race, and that one (AL Wild Card) is largely on life support. The Rays need a LOT of luck and to catch fire to make anything happen.

The Giants aren't coming back, the Angels aren't coming back.. a series can help, but it's practically impossible to make up those games in such a short time.

Speaking of the Rays, I think their internal feeling that they weren't making the playoffs is the reason they don't make the playoffs.

If they don't dick around Desmond Jennings and Matt Moore, and are more active at the trading deadline, the entire race could be different. Oh well. I guess that's the difference between teams that want to win and teams that don't.

With this being 19 straight losing seasons, may as well go for a flat 20 next year then turn it around, and hopefully Hurdle is still there to lead it.

But, to be fair, there IS actually hope after this particular losing season.

And the Giants are just hammering the Rockies, closing in on their 8th straight. I wonder if they would've had more hope for a playoff spot had they cut Miguel Tejada and Aaron Rowand earlier in the season. And just show how bad they were for this team, I was a big advocate of tying them to a tree and shooting them around, oh say, April. If either of them ever get another big league gig, the GM who signs them should be tied to that same tree...

Even better news: Wilson is back!

This September has been probably been the worst month of Red Sox baseball since they won it all in 2004. The worst part is that I already paid for ticket reservations for the ALDS and World Series. If they don't make it, no money back. Back in July it looked like a lock, now even making the playoffs looks 50:50.

I'd agree with you. Im just extremely disappointed in the contrast between halves right now. Things looked so positive at the AS Break - not that I was even sold on a playoff birth then - but certainly finishing .500 was realistic, and now in the second half they've completely fallen off a cliff and played like the franchise of the last 18 years.

Agreed, even as someone who doesn't like the Pirates one way or the other, I wanted to see them finish above .500.

Quick, someone find Pittsburgh's records before and after The Braves Game. I want to know if that outcome really did eat their souls, and if so, how badly.

If I remember correctly, the Pirates won the last game of the series in Atlanta, then went on their 10+ game losing streak as soon as they left town.

15-37 after "That Game", 15-38 including "That Game"....if I counted correctly.

Funny you use that as the marking point because thats when the wheels really did fall off. Actually I had looked it up earlier this afternoon when me and Eye kicked it around.

Up to the All Star Break: 47-43

Up to the Braves game: 53-47

Since then (including that game): 15-38

Went to the Dodger game yesterday. That was brutal. Hard to believe those Pirates were ever in first place this season, though they've probably long since given up by now.

Of course I was only there because it was Hello Kitty night, with tons of Sanrio SWAG. Hello Kitty threw out the first pitch y'all, and all her friends came: the frog, the black thing, and some other character that must have been a female because it had a bow. Tons of chicks there, too.
