2012 MLB & Logo Changes

It's "strongly" discouraged, and it is now (in the last 3 years) almost always adhered to. There have been some exceptions (like 1 or 2 a year league-wide). Chicago blowing it off in Oakland (didn't want to switch out of the black alts because they wear them in streaks) and Atlanta wearing the navy against someone else in navy (in 2010, I think) were the most recent examples.

I know everyone thinks the same-color-alt thing happens all the time, but it is extremely rare now in regular season games. It happened once in 2011, and I think twice in 2010. The last year it was a problem was 2009, when the White Sox, Braves, and Padres ignored it almost completely. That was the first year Selig asked teams to not wear similar-colored alts.

There are certain combos that are considered clashes, and other aren't. Royal isn't a clash with either Navy or Columbia Blue (don't rememeber which). Red clashes with Orange. Black and Navy are obvious. I think Green is a no-clash. And I don't think anyone has tried to wear Orange against Oakland's Yellow, so I don't know if that is considered a clash.

While it's good we are seeing fewer same-color alt matchups, ANY alt vs. alt matchup is bad. It looks like a spring training game.

I disagree. I think it's a refreshing bit from the usual grey/white. I'm hoping we see Oakland and Toronto pull out their alts in their upcoming series. Royal vs gold/green would look great IMO.

I think Royal is fine against Columbia blue.

I also think Green (especially the green the A's use, which is what I assume you are talking about) could be seen as a clash with navy.

I doubt we'll see orange against yellow - it seems that the A's only wear yellow at home and the only teams with orange jerseys (who actually wear them) seem to only wear them at home. If it happens, though, I don't think it will be considered a clash. We've seen from Lakers vs. Suns that orange and yellow are distinguishable enough.

The funny thing about this whole situation is that I think white versus gray is a clash in and of itself. Have you seen matchups like CIN @ WSH (just pulling a random example, there might be better ones)?

Oh, and maybe we should clarify what we mean by clash. By "clash" in sports jerseys, I think of it as the two jerseys looking too similar. Not "clash" like "these colors don't match."

By clash, I meant it in the more soccer-centric usage, as in they "clash" and someone has to change what they are wearing. I would be fine with whatever term anyone wants to try out there.

And the match-ups I mentioned are known problem match-ups. The Astros have not been able to wear their brick alts against Atlanta's red or SF's orange (these were the only times you saw the Astros grey roads in 2009 & 2010). The Rays wore a blue alt against the Royals royal alt in TB, but I don't remember if it was the navy or the columbia. And I think the A's have worn green at will against any jersey, but I can't say for certain on that. The A's wore the yellows on the road once last year, so it's conceivable they'd take them to Baltimore, Miami, or SF. Not likely, but conceivable. I think yellow would not be allowed against orange, but there's no way to know. Maybe Houston will get an orange road alt next season and try to wear them in Oakland.

Go Astros!

Go Texans!

Go Rockets!

Go Javelinas!

A game between the A's yellow jerseys and either the Blue Jays road greys, or better yet, the royal blue alternates would look amazing IMO.

Some of the more interesting matchups with the A's alts.Aug 27 of last year the Red Sox wore their reds and the A's wore their greens.

Regarding the A's wearing the yellows on the road, they basically only wore it on the road for Interleague games only. But they actually wore it more than once on the road.

June 25 & 26 against Phi at Citizen's Bank Ballpark

June 21 & 22 at CitiField vs the Mets

The story behind that is they were currently on a winning streak and during that streak at home, they wore the gold tops. But since they had to go on the road, they weren't sure if they were allowed to wear the gold tops (since they were under impression that they were designated for home only).

When they found out that they could wear it on the road, they did so in hopes of keeping their win streak mojo

Go A's!

The "frowned upon" navy vs. black matchup in happening right now in game 2 of a doubleheader between the Indians and White Sox in Cleveland. I believe game 1 was white vs. gray.

WATFO that this was going to happen during this discussion?! It only happens once or twice a year.

The White Sox are notorious for ignoring the recommendation, so it's not surprising they are wearing black against Cleveland's navy.

Go Astros!

Go Texans!

Go Rockets!

Yeah, I found it to be quite timely. :)

A lot clearer than the Cardinals pic. Thanks for sharing.

If they are going to do this, I still hope they eventually put the stars & stripes in the logo (instead of the camo this year). I think it would be a better look than anything else they've tried.

Odd. They had lost the three previous games before the June 21st game, though.

Don't mind these nearly as much as the garish ones the MLB has pulled out the last few years.

It's probably just the camouflage effect, but does that Yankees logo look "off" to anyone else?

Yeah, but I think it's just the double outline that makes it look weird. I've seen other Yankees fashion hats with that same effect

Yeah, the logo looks really stupid with the double outline. Goes from best in the majors to deeply bush league.

This either is or was the case with their BP hats and it looked terrible.

That Yanks cap looks like one of those "fashion caps" that are quite popular amongst rappers and whatnot.

It looks absolutely hideous. That outline takes it from bad to worse.
