Patriotic Hats in MLB

Last year, it was $1 donated for every cap sold. This year, it's all net proceeds.

Either way, it's not 100%.

I like to think they upped it to all profits because nobody else would buy the hats otherwise.

Au contraire. Plenty of people will buy them. People who buy the US flag tees or crazy flag patterned clothing have to know that the proceeds of that don't go to anything noble, right? Some people just want to rep the US Flag, decorum be damned.

Go Astros!

Go Texans!

Go Rockets!

Go Javelinas!

I've expressed my annoyance with this program before, and I know MLB started out very evasive on the donation aspect, but if what you say is true about the $1 donation, and MLB marked up these caps $2 from the regular price like they did this year ($36.99 vs. $34.99), then that's beyond sad.

$45 at the Jays Shop... so much for that higher Canadian dollar

I bet its the net proceeds that New Era makes (probably in the $5 range), or its just the royalties that MLB makes. (Probably in the $3 range) Or maybe its both?

There's no way you could donate every retailer's profit (probably about $17), and if so why would anyone carry them??

Oh, I dunno. Charity?

They need to go back to the flag patch on the side of the hat, or even replace the MLB logo on the back. Simple and classy. Let the Nationals go crazy with their flag stuff - at least it fits their color scheme.

I just don't like that they wear them 3 or 4 times per year now. I never really liked them restricting the hats to red and blue either. I would almost be able to stomach these if they kept the teams original hat color, and then put the RWB over the logos.

When the whole topic of what the 2011 S&S caps would look like originally came up, someone posted a photo of those hats. The A's hats was green with the flag-draped "A's" logo, and it actually looked acceptable. Much better than the red or blue pinwheel, which clashes with their green.

The ironic thing about these "patriotic" caps is that they are in direct violation of the US Flag Code, which is a Federal Law (though there is no punishment and the law is virtually un-enforceable.)

I'm with the others in thinking that there is already enough chest-thumping patriotism at most MLB games and we don't need to compromise the on-field uniforms.

I'm almost ashamed to admit this, but I bought one (last year's version). They had them for sale for $6 at the Royals Fan Fest in January, so I picked one up. I haven't worn it though, and doubt I ever will, but it was only $6, and I know that 100% of that money went to Royals Charities since they were the ones selling them.

I bought a new 59Fifty at the Red Sox game last night and had the choice between the new S&S caps or the regular Red Sox 59Fifty. Normally this wouldn't be a hard choice, but every single on field 59Fifty that I could find was made in China. This irks me so much. The on field 59Fiftys are the best caps you can buy IMO. But there is a noticeable difference between the American made and the Chinese made caps. The Chinese made caps are put together awfully and the material is such trashy quality. Within the next few seasons I fully expect to see all the on field caps made in China, and if that's the case I'm done buying them. I thought it was only a small run of caps like the Angels caps this season or the Yankees caps with the patch on the back due to having to produce so many in such a short amount of time, but seeing even the most basic of on field caps made in China shows me that this is a trend that'll only get worse.

Are they both on field caps? You can tell just by looking at the two. The buttons on top, the cool base material, and even the bills are extremely different. Every on field cap I have that was made in China have difficult bills, they stand up like a bill board on my head, and never fit properly. I'll post a side by side eventually to show the differences because IMO, they're pretty glaring.

Personally, I think that the hats look awful on the field, but I don't mind seeing fans wear them. I actually have a white-crowned one from 2010. While it is unclear whether or not they are patriotic or not, and how much money of the proceeds goes to the troops, I don't have any problem with sales of the caps. However, wearing them in the games is just awful. From the start in 2008, the MLB should have just put the stars and stripes team logo on their regular cap color. The only reason I think that they don't do that now is because for some teams, (red and blue hat teams), it would be a hat that has already been worn in 2008 or 2009, and presumably the same fans wouldn't buy it again. I don't like how they're worn in the games, as they seem like really just a form of advertising to me. Also, I made a crappy mockup of what I'm expecting next year for the stars and stripes hats. Prepare yourself for the ugliest thing you've ever seen:
