Charlotte Hornets?

Lights Out

But seriously: why did they remove the corner-cutout from the top right of the C on the bottom one? Its the only letter they did.

I'm guessing it has to do with the fact that the condensed wordmark is kerned more tightly than the extended one, enabling the interplay between the C and the H on the condensed one.

Say what you want about Jordan's management history, but he is a genius with his brand. I have no doubts that the uniforms will be great.

I don't know about that - there have been some pretty awful uniforms there since he took over....

Given the trend of blandness over the last several years, I wouldn't expect anything different from this uniform set. I don't even remember the last time a new NBA uniform was unveiled and the majority on here approved. I know the Suns and Pelicans sets didn't go over very well last year.

I don't get all the hate for the Pelicans identity. It's a unique mascot that fits the area really well, and the logos and colors are actually pretty solid IMO.

In definitely gonna miss the last incarnation of the Hornets logo, though. The new logo is nice enough, but it pales in comparison to Hugo.

They should've just used the logo bigdub designed. It is literally a perfect modernization of Hugo.

I get that rationale. But if that's the case, then why not remove that piece from other letters as well? Why just the C?

More to make the point that I have no emotional attachment to a city - to show how unbiased and unattached I am.

Yes, but plenty of people with no attachment to the city have weighed in on the opposite side of things. As much as you want to play the "unbiased observer" card, well so can I.

I won't discuss this with you unless you quote my entire post.

No need to trim my comments to suit your narrative.

My narrative? :D

Look tubbs, I quoted that specific part because it made no sense. The rest of the post was fine.

Not to be a stickler or anything, but you forgot the Seattle Mariners.

Oopsey-daisy.

ColorWerx can you give us a rundown on the difference between other shades of purple and the Hornets shade of purple? It looks blue-ish to me.

I'll have to do this tomorrow, but it's the same shade the Suns are currently using. And the same shade that the N.O. Hornets last used (with the Creole Blue and Mardi Gras Gold).

I think it's the overall blandness of the uniforms—or at least that's the hang-up with me for the Pelicans identity. It's a sick name with an awesome logo but to go from having some of the best uniforms with a lot of things going for them to the bland ones they ended up with was a little disheartening.

It's interesting to me that they made a full "Charlotte Hornets" wordmark in the condensed, and the extended type:

MSCNhRx.png

I think the letter shapes on the top condensed one look kinda shoddy. But the tracking on some of the letters in the bottom one is downright awful (the C-H in particular is painful to look at).

The O in Hornets and the E in Charlotte don't have serifs, but the O in Charlotte and the E in Hornets do.

Also, why reintroduce teal into the league if you're just going to wear purple on the road? They have a colour that's unique to the NBA but they're going to dress like the Kings and Lakers (and sort of Raptors who are throwing back to the purple, dinosaur unis).

That's not a problem at all, IMO, since the letters that precede them allow them to have those serifs, unlike in the case where they don't. It's not uncommon for a typeface to have alternative glyphs.

I understand that this is not the exact same thing as the Browns/Ravens example. But the NFL lowered the bar in terms of spitting in the eye of historical reality by considering the relocated Browns "a new franchise". This has opened the door to even worse transgressions, such as this one with the Hornets. Even Major League Baseball has been affected, as the Washington Nationals ignore their franchise history as the Montreal Expos, and claim a fictitious origin date of 1905.

The only right way is the way that the American League handled the move of the Washington Senators to Minnesota and the simultaneous creation of the new Senators. There was never even a thought of "transferring the history" or of calling the relocated team "a new franchise". This was the only way imaginable until the NFL and the Browns screwed it up.

Thankfully, the NHL is clear that Winnipeg Jets / Phoenix Coyotes is one franchise and Atlanta Thrashers / Winnipeg Jets is another franchise. That is the sensible model that the NBA needed to follow. Instead, they contribute to the trashing of history, like a post-modernist who denies the existence of objective reality. Idiots.

Very good post.

The Browns/Ravens was much cleaner than this. There were no overlapping histories to deal with. What was done there was quite simple by comparison. But it was still historical revision and it set the tone that even allowed us to think of moving around the histories of these teams and just sort of making it up as we go. If the Kings move to Seattle, the NBA's history is going to be a mess.

Milwaukee Brewers, 1901, 69-year hiatus, 1970-present? No.

Disclaimer: If this comment is about an NBA uniform from 2017-2018 or later, do not constitute a lack of acknowledgement of the corporate logo to mean anything other than "the corporate logo is terrible and makes the uniform significantly worse."
