Uniforms that made you a fan of the team

Recommended Posts

For me, it's the Detroit Red Wings. I live in Michigan, so they're already my favorite hockey team (representing my home state and all). But when you add in some of the most beautiful uniforms in the NHL, it's a no brainier as to who my favorite team is.

Sorry for this huge multiquote but I do love these kinds of stories:

I was 15 years old and I'd never seen anything like it before. Everyone around me was a Reds fan, but I was the weird kid who took all the art classes and this just spoke to me. Nolan Ryan and JR Richards became my favorite players. By my mid-twenties I had decided that this uniform was the devil, but in my old age I've come back around, mostly out of nostolgia I'm sure.

haha, I like the arc of this. I'm in my mid-20s and feel like I already nostalgically appreciate the big logo NBA uniforms of the 90s.

I got a lot of grief growing up in San Diego and being a Chargers fan but I always loved the Raiders uniforms. While everyone else in town hated the Raiders, I'd cheer for them when they weren't playing the Chargers because they looked to cool.

Ah, yeah, I'm sure a lot of Raiders fans could post in this thread. Is there something about Chargers fans needing a second team to cheer for? Those neighborhood friends I mentioned in my OP who became Falcons fans after the redesign were both Chargers fans (I grew up in SoCal).

Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Seattle Seahawks, and later Charlotte Hornets.

I first learned of the Bucs in the spring of 1976, on a family vacation to Florida when I was 11. Riding in a car with my relatives, I saw an orange billboard in Tampa with the Bucco Bruce logo and the saying, "The Bucs are Coming!" (in red letters). I asked my Uncle Mike what that was about; he explained that it was a new NFL team, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, that would be starting up in the fall. I remember really liking the name and unusual color scheme. Later that summer, Icees (Slurpees for most of you) were being sold in collectible NFL helmet cups, and I got the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, which I thought was really cool. I also was able to get the other new team, which I found was the Seattle Seahawks, and found their blue, green and silver scheme with wrap-around totem pole-looking logo really cool. I became fans of those teams and actually saw the Tampa Bay Buccaneers first win (against the Saints) in 1977.

In the fall of 1987, just starting in grad school at Georgia Tech , I found out about the forthcoming 4 team NBA expansion (just the locations and the names). I doodled possible logos for each team, and kind of liked the name Charlotte Hornets. When I went to my first Atlanta Hawks game in November of that year, I bought a program which had articles about all 4 teams. Three of these had the logos (Miami's came later). The Orlando Magic's logo and colors were pretty cool, as were the Minnesota Timberwolves' Seahawk-esque blue, green and silver, but what blew my mind was the "teal and purple striped bee" as it was described for the Charlotte Hornets. The only team at that time to use a variation of teal was the Dolphins (who called it aqua), and no one had ever combined teal with purple. I found it the coolest color combo I had ever seen, and immediately took a liking to the team. . It also didn't hurt that teal/aqua was becoming a popular color in general at that time (ties, cars, gadgets, etc.) or that I've often taking a liking to teams in "new" areas without other franchises.

I really enjoyed these stories.

I picked the Yanks hat. End of story.

hahaha, I hate the Yanks (2000 & 2001 ALCS never forget), but aesthetically you made the right choice.

I've been torn on this for a few months now, but has anyone ever ditched a team due to a uniform change? I've seriously considered it lately, for many reasons, but in part due to their Bruce Jenner facelift-like disaster they just rolled out.

This would be an interesting flip-side to this thread; I'd want to know if anyone did this too.

It was impossible not to groove on these guys.

I totally agree, even now.

I used to cheer for the better uniform when I had a rooting interest, but there really are only two that I can think of that actually made me fans. (though I am no longer a "fan" of any team beside my own teams....I was as a kid)

That's funny, because those were my two favorite teams until the Bucs changed in 1997. The Bengals were always my team because of proximity (and still are), but the Buccs were 1B because of those uniforms. Since 1997, I've been indifferent to them.

I remember wanting the Suns to beat the Bulls in the NBA Finals just because of their uniforms:

I was a HUGE Utah Jazz fan for awhile as a kid simply because of these beauties.

only once have i made the decision to be a fan of a team because of the uniform. this was 1991 i believe, the year before the Cowboys became a dynasty. i saw all the NFL uniforms together in some picture and that helmet stood out to me immediately. really, how awesome is that thing? blue and metallic silver, so simple and powerful. plus they were the only team (i think) to wear white at home which made them really unique. and the year after they win the Super Bowl. couldnt have made a better choice. then the team crumbled in the late 90s, Irvin and Aikman were done, there were 3 consecutive 5-11 seasons, Emmitt left, and there was this up and coming cat in my backyard named Peyton and i decided to jump ship on the Indy bandwagon and been there ever since.

i love uniform design, but besides this example i get excited about teams because of the players, not designs. i dont watch sports because of the uniforms but i dont think i could ever be a big fan of a team who had a poor logo or uniform. sorry Jacksonvile, Tampa (2014), Miami, Carolina, i can barely stand to watch your highlights

Blue Jays. never really cared for baseball, but I started to get into it when the Jays went to their current unis. Add that to them being on SportsNet every day and being in Canada, and I'm now a huge Jays fan.

I mentioned the Creamsicle Bucs and the Bengals, but the Red Wings is another one. They were no good in the 80s but I liked them. Then when the North Stars left, I adopted them as my team...and it all went back to the uniforms.

Of course when they finally won the cup, it did not do much for me...adopting a team did not work, but I was a fan as kid because of the uniforms.

Disclaimer: If this comment is about an NBA uniform from 2017-2018 or later, do not constitute a lack of acknowledgement of the corporate logo to mean anything other than "the corporate logo is terrible and makes the uniform significantly worse."

I live near Sacramento but am a Lakers fan, however I do enjoy the Kings ocasionally. What really kicked it off for me was their logo in NBA Jam (the original one) on Super Nintendo. I saw it when I was about 4 or 5 years old. Sometime in 1994, I believe.

The funny part is when I started getting into Basketball more, they switched to the current logo. it was okay, but I preferred what I originally saw.
