It looked cool and unique

It's cool and unique to you but gaudy and ugly to others.

I think we can all debate about the aesthetics of the ballpark and the uniforms forever if we want (yes I know that's what we do here) but what matters is making a successful on field product and despite all the other changes the Marlins are making I believe the on field product is still their ultimate target and as long as they get there then whatever they're doing is the right thing.

I think too many people take that horrible take that any changes not related to the field product mean that an organization isn't focusing on the team. Like the Giants just revealed a new scoreboard and oh man the comments from people on social media who are pissed that they bothered working on that "instead of" improving the team. Its unbelievable.

Also so I am starting to think that people outside of Florida think everything is bright and colorful all over the place.  It’s not.

South Florida is on the whole more colorful than, say, St. Louis or Milwaukee. Having fewer dismal grey days helps a lot.

Every day down here isn’t a scene from the Birdcage.  It seems outsiders don’t realize the majority of people and places aren’t characitures

Just to elaborate.  Yes, bright and colorful is a motif that is available to a Florida team.  It doesn’t lend itself to a Rust Belt team.  But that isn’t to say a Florida team HAS to do this.  I have spoken to plenty of Heat fans that thought the Vice jersey was a fun thing to do once or twice but that the theme is waaay overdone now and they should get back to their actual team colors.

I didn't say it was a scene from The Birdcage. But I'm familiar with the area and wouldn't call it awash in beiges and greys.

I think the Marlins were on to something by embracing color and getting away from both "we bleed [one color] and [other color]" culture and neo-retro architecture. I even thought the home run fish was cool because at least it was something different. The second Yankeefication of the Marlins is disappointing.

Ive been looking through the renders and progress shots of the updates and so far, I’m pretty impressed. Mostly because it feels fresh, like its a new era where ownership is taking the team seriously, moving towards a pro ball park look. Yea its Miami but nothing about this stadium before looked like Miami. The team identity didn’t even look like it belonged in Miami. Colors here are often pastel and sun bleached. Not primary and sunburned.

you know what it reminded me of before (though Toys R Us and a circus is pretty good) is the Cheescake Factory....because the CF has no theme. It’s everything. Its a trip around the world in different time periods and you can almost get anything you want to eat there. That lack of theme, or even having a vision for what you want to be, is alien and really weird to spend time in. As a designer, its annoying as hell. The previous Marlins Park design had no aesthetic structure, no theme or vision, nothing at all to make you feel like you were in a pro ball park. It was all eye candy, intense color and patterns everywhere and not only was it a bad art experiment attacking the senses, it just isn’t functional. When you have all the colors all over the place, how are people supposed to navigate the space? Why is it that the decoration is eye catching but not the signage? Throw in the advertising and sponsors, and it only increases the visual noise; no one thought about how people move through the space or what colors meant here aside from the division of the quardrents but they didn’t coordinate with things around (or within) them. It was absolutely chaos and incredibly tacky.

2019 definitely wont be the final chapter in this renovation though. I think they have to start with a clean slate, and then they’ll add to it over the next few years. Start with making it feel right, starting with good materials and colors and a signage system that helps people move through the space. Update the luxury spaces to feel like you’re on a yacht (i say that because it looks like that’s exactly what they’ve done. It was important to address those areas as well) and along the way you can add in decoration and signature pieces. I can’t wait to get down there and see a game at this point.

I'm going to the Cheesecake Factory tonight. All I will think about is this now. But at least I'll have a story about Cheesecake Factory to share with my wife that came from "my site" (that's what I call these forums when talking to her because I'm on here a lot).

Oh man I was talking to a Heat fan the other day who was telling me he's glad it's just an alternate look.

As someone who doesn't follow the Heat closely it does feel like they're heavily neglecting their actual colors these days.

yea, theres a lot of equity tied into that primary look and some of the reservations about the alts probably has to do with their record while wearing them, but at least the Heat got the inspiration right for the alts and they look like a part of Miami history. even if it's Miami Subs, or South Beach specifically, at least you see the pink and blue and think "yea, thats Miami doing the Vice thing". with the Marlins, it was more like someone designed everything (stadium, logos, uniforms) without ever seeing a single picture of Miami. that stuff was out of place from the get.

Good for you. Mine always seems to think that I'm spending all the time I'm around here actually watching some porn... Her face always says "Yeah right, you're reading about sports logos once again"...

I'm not from Florida but I live here now...and I'm with the admiral on this one. Florida teams can certainly get away with more colour (be it in their unis or stadium signage) then teams from the Northeast or Midwest can.

The Florida Marlins busted onto the scene with teal hats, teal script, and teal pinstripes.

Now that they're named after the actual city of Miami? Which is known for being visually stimulating? They should be a bit gaudy. Gaudy =/= bad.

My point. Jeter can suck all the fun out of the team, claim he's changing the culture, etc... but it's all going to be boring and pretentious if he doesn't produce a winning team.

The Marlins have sucked recently because they were managed horribly. Not because the stadium was lined with colourful tiles. So the idea that changing the tiles will factor into anything is ridiculous.

In short? Jeter's a bore and making the stadium boring respectable won't matter one iota in changing how the team performs.

I don't know how many Heat fans you have spoken to, but judging by social media the Vice colors seem to be very popular in Miami. Just a search of "American Airlines Arena" on Instagram alone shows mostly pics of Heat fans in Vice colors. Seems to be a big hit down there:

The fact that this many fans are buying and wearing Vice gear shows how popular it is. It might not be the Heat's "actual team colors", but it's still their colors. I doubt the average Heat fan thinks it's "overdone". Far from it:

I think you and I are talking about two different things.  I think you can draw a distinction between fan apparel and team uniforms.  I’m speaking specifically about the way the players on the court are dressed and you’ve illustrated the way fans have taken to buying merchendise for themselves.  These aren’t the same things.

BFBS gets thrown around on these boards a lot.  Before black uniforms became more pervasive  on the field of play it had a presence in merchandising in the early 90s.  I could be wrong but this could have been as a result of big sales for Raiders and White Sox apparel.  Black hats and t shirts became available for all teams and people bought them.  Once that color was introduced into players uniforms opinion divided.

This is where I think our conversation is at the moment.  Sure fans like the shirts.  Also if they know the team is wearing it that day they’ll wear the Vice shirts.  (Maybe we should check back later this year once they go back to their regular uniforms and court to see how the crowd is dressed then).  However what I’m relaying in my post is that many long time fans of the team (people that were watching from day one) would prefer to see the players wearing red and black on the regular

The difference here though is that it is way more unique and area specific than BFBS, no team outside of Miami is going to bandwagon of this success. It’s a fun look and it sells, let it be.

Excellent!

I’m not suggesting they get rid of it.  But they should stop wearing it every single night.  The Dolphins only use their throwbacks twice a year (three with permission) and they sell tons of throwback gear.  The Heat can still sell their Vice stuff and have a couple Vice nights per month instead of having what appears to be every game in Vice uniforms

They’ll wear the vice (black and pink) 23/42 home games, a little more than half. That’s probably about on par with the frequency of other teams wearing alternates (due to Nike). Some of these games have already been changed to the red and black look because of superstitions.

Wow. That’s a lot.

https://www.nba.com/heat/1819-heat-vice-uniform-collection

looks like they blocked out an entire chunk of their home schedule to wear them exclusively (except the 23rd and 30th of January for some reason...maybe there is something different planned related to MLK Day that week).

So I suspect then that once Vice nights end in February they’ll put the regular court back out there.  Maybe we should check back on the crowd shots in March and see what people are wearing then.

Since this is a marlins thread I’ll relate this to them with a question.   What kind of response from fans and uniform enthusists do you think would occur if the marlins went 50/50 with their home game uniforms?  Half teal Florida Marlins and half rebranded Miami Marlins. Would MLB even allow it?  I feel like this sort of thing wouldn’t work well in baseball.
