2015-16 NHL Uniform and Logo Changes

The whole disney thing aside, why are people nostalgic about the Mighty Ducks?

Because that logo is sheer genius.

It's clever and whimsical, tapping into hockey history with the old-timey mask and not taking itself too seriously. It beats the hell out of any wordmark or bland corporatized "D". It's hockey and Ducks and fun all wrapped up into one.

When your name is "Ducks", you can't be too self-consciously serious. Otherwise you end up with nonsense like this:

There's a reason Oregon still sells cartoony duck merchandise and quietly retired their "cool" duck out of embarrassment.

And there you have it. The first Sharks jersey I'll buy during the RBK era.

God I miss that set. That era, too.

The first and third Ducks movies are pretty good for what they are. The second one is hot garbage.

Giant Pacific Octopus> Sure Disney wanted to use the team to promote themself. But the NHL also saw it as an opportunity to grow the game, to promote it, and get kids and young people interested in hockey. And you know what? it worked, it worked very very well. I was a 90's kid, and proof of that.

I always found that odd. I was into Transformers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the Power Rangers, Marvel Comics, and I loved the 90s Raptors look. I was in that key young male demographic right when the Ducks started up. I never needed to see a cartoon duck-shaped hockey mask to get me interested in the game.

Yes, I know. Canada. It's not the same. How dare I expect every market to be like Toronto, yadda yadda...

Well obviously i can only speak for myself but for me, it started when my friends started to collect hockey cards. I was only 9 or something, and just liked the logo, which i had seen on caps and stuff like that even before that, so i collected cards with Mighty Ducks players, thereby learning about players like Kariya, Rucchin, Hebert, Dollas, Tverdowski, Selanne etc. In my circle, collecting hockey cards was just a fad, soon to be replaced by the next new thing. But there was just something about that logo. I liked to draw, so naturally, i would proceed to learn how to draw the logo, and later on i started to draw all the other NHL logos, and then the players that i had learned about from the cards. I started to wish for/buy stuff with the logo on. And i started to play the games from EA, and catch a game whenever i could (which was hard, because of the time zone). I even started to play street hockey. By the time the hockey card collecting fad was over, i was too invested in it, to give it up. If it hadn't been from the logo itself, i'd probably soon have forgotten all about hockey. If you live in a place like Canada you might not need stuff like that, because you are so exposed to the game. But in my country, football/soccer reigns supreme. But yeah, i was into Power Rangers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Biker Mice from Mars and all the other glorious 90s crap too. God i love the 90s :-D

The whole disney thing aside, why are people nostalgic about the Mighty Ducks?

Sure, it's a decent movie, but I've never seen anyone argue for the Chiefs to be the next NHL team name.

They did nothing good while they were the Mighty Ducks. There's the 2003 loss and Paul Kariya's tears. That's the story of the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim.

As soon as they dropped the mighty, the won the cup. But nobody seems to care about when success happened.

I really think it's nostalgia for no purpose other than "I want to feel the warm happiness I did as a child, before I learned that the real world isn't going to make all my dreams come true." And that's no way to market a sports franchise.

As i said, to me it has nothing to do with the movies. I don't even think they are that good. Too goofy and stupid IMO. Even as a kid, it never made any sense to me how they where just allowed to switch jerseys between the periods in the second movie. And don't even get me started on the knuckle puck, flying V, lassoing opponents and all the other stupid stuff they did. In the 90s, Disney made classics like Aladdin, Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Tarzan etc. Compared to that, the Mighty Ducks movies was crap.

And to sum the Mighty Ducks era up with a "well they lost the final to the Devils" is very unreasonable IMO. They played some good games, even if they never won the cup. It was great watching Kariya and Selanne together. And their Cinderella run was memorable, even though they didn't win. To this very day, i still get goose-bumps when i watch Stevens hit Kariya, and Kariya returning to the ice.

And there is nothing wrong with nostalgia. Infact i'd argue nostalgia play a huge role in sport. Who doesn't remember their teams favorite moments? So why can't we be nostalgic about our favorite uniforms?

Wondering if the Sharks' "heritage jersey with throwback elements" means it'll use the current (inferior) name and number font.

Probably, if only for the sake of simplifying manufacturing. I don't mind the Sharks' font itself so much as the sin of double-layer names over triple-layer numbers. Single can go over everything, like always goes with like, but double over triple looks wrong. Just triple-layer the names, too, geez!

EDIT: To go with my tweaked logo upthread, I'd go (from inner to outer) black-silver-teal for the names and teal-silver-black for the numbers on white, white-black-silver for both on teal.

♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫

On what planet is this...

(Original black Ducks jersey)

Better than this?

(Eggplant "Mighty Ducks" jersey)

I don't love either of 'em. I am back and forth on the Mighty logo, but ultimately I like it. What I don't like is the asymmetrical 90s look. I also don't like the eggplant. But I'll give 'em credit for being unique and I agree that the black Ducks look (black jersey, asymmetrical, no logo) was about as uninspired as it gets.

The original jersey is better. But I'll take "Anaheim Ducks" over "Mighty Ducks of Anaheim" any day. So they can go back to the old look but please, please, keep the current name.

Ultimately, I'd like to see them take some inspiration from some of the concepts on this board and go the green and orange route.

Disclaimer: If this comment is about an NBA uniform from 2017-2018 or later, do not constitute a lack of acknowledgement of the corporate logo to mean anything other than "the corporate logo is terrible and makes the uniform significantly worse."

I agree. And I didn't know Oregon had a kewl duck.

Also, the original Anaheim colors were great. A unique, fun '90s color scheme for a team with a unique, fun '90s name which was started in the '90s. I loved the uniforms since the beginning, and that was independent of the films. Sure, "Mighty Ducks of Anaheim" sucked as a name, but they could have easily went with what they have now and kept the unique, spirited brand.

As for why people like the movies, nostalgia? I haven't see them in at least 15 years, so I don't know how well they held up. But for kids of the '90s not living in Canada, we probably didn't watch Slapshot until sometime in college. It wasn't a cultural thing for us. For anyone aged 25-40, the Mighty Ducks is the definitive hockey movie.

It's like Willem Dafoe's Green Goblin and Howard the Duck conceived a child.

I feel like I'm in a minority of people who became a fan of the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim from day one but never ever cared for the movies. (And the District 5 jerseys from the first movie sucks so hard).

I admit that I did mark out the first time I saw them break out the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim jerseys in D2. Then again I was 10 or 11. Never even saw the third one. Could care less about them now.

The Roboduck debacle was embarrassing from start to finish. Check out his introduction:

"(Oregon) dominating here on this spectacular autumn day, colors turning here and a sold-out capacity crowd seeing Oregon get well against the Stanford Cardinal. Now, something else that the Oregon fans have seen, and have reacted to, but may be still a little confused about..."

Give me whimsical any day. I love the duck-mask logo.

People know I am a huge hockey fan and always ask about the Mighty Duck movies... I never cared for them and couldn't tell you much about any of the three movies.

I have always liked the Dusk mask logo though.

But the Mighty Ducks logo was made by a huge corporation that is secretly buying up everything. From ABC television to Marvel Comics to Star Wars.

The fact is the "Mighty Ducks" logo is

*A cartoon logo

*Designed by a cartoon company

*For a team with a cartoon nickname

*To promote a brand that debuted a year earlier as a kids film.

The movie begot the sports team that begot the Saturday morning cartoon that begot the toys.

The clever webbed foot/D gives the team the look of a pro sports franchise rather that a Disney brand.

The Catch of the Day!

You view the Mighty Ducks logo as a threat to the Stars Wars Universe?

But the Disney brand is 1000× more recognizable than the "pro sports" one. For that reason alone, it should be used (not the name though). There's literally no reason (aside from a childish attempt to look "mature") to leave the Mighty Ducks branding in the past, especially when that branding is darn near the only reason why people cared about them in the first place.

Tradition is the foundation of innovation, and not the enemy.

Reminds me of when Warner Brothers tried to "revamp" Bugs Bunny 10 years ago.

Needless to say it failed.

I remember lurking on these boards during the 06 unveiling and can't recall anyone calling the webbed 'D' clever. The most praise it received was that it would be marginally better without the script...

Regardless of how it's coloured, the duck mask blows it clear out of the water.
