NHL Anti-Thread: Bad Business Decision Aggregator

WOW. When I drove out to California last month I drove right past that and nearly pulled over to check it out because I couldn't fathom any reason why there were giant crumbling grandstands in the middle of nowhere. It's DEFINITELY spooky, and shows just how shortsighted and careless this state is when it comes to public funding. Thanks for giving me an answer!

Except from what I can read in that article, that wasn't funded by "a Pheonix suburb" but a private developer. If it had been a local Arizona government behind it, they'd still be paying to keep it open...

Ahh, I misunderstood then. My mistake. Still a good article, and it totally answered my question on just what the heck that thing was.

But two sources familiar with the Coyotes deal say some financing for the sale has either not been finalized or has dropped out of the deal.

Mr. Wembley, it happened again

I...um...HOW?! This deal was so friggin' one-sided that investors were guaranteed to come out ahead I thought.

Of course maybe that's why Seattle just blew up. Can Bettman just retire to that city? The yearning for Seattle seems to solely come from him.

The RSE deal includes a $120 million loan from New York-based private equity firm Fortress Investment Group LLC (NYSE: FIG) as well as an $85 million loan from the NHL, according to a May report by Forbes.

The league, the entity selling the team, is floating half of the purchase price to the buyers, and they still might not be able to afford buying the team. Now I'm not so much interested in the inevitable invocation of the out-clause in 2018, as I am in whether this team's going to end up in bankruptcy court again before that.

I still believe RSE's going to close the deal come Monday, because if the league's willing to loan them $85 million, what's preventing them from loaning RSE $170 million? Especially when Ed Snider's reminding everyone about the super-sweet arena management deal he's got lined up.
