The facemask call was kind of tacky but I guess there is no shade of grey any more, that would have been a five yarder in the past. He baerly touched it and did not yank on it but oh my oh my.

Wow. Not to be pessimistic (which means I'm going to be): So next season all personal foul penalties and pass interference will be either reviewable and/or challengeable. Though that penalty gave GB the chance for an extra play and while I'm pretty sure Packers players boxed out, I saw one of the Lions defenders almost willingly go behind the receivers - if you give them the opportunity to create a wall...

So when will we'll see a State Farm Rodgers & Rodgers discount double-check commercial coming. :)

I will say, I don't think I've ever seen a team/coach/QB plead to the officials for borderline penalties after every play like the Packers and Rodgers do.

But regardless, if you're playing the Lions, all you have to do is not beat yourself and the Lions will do what they always do, find a way to lose.

At least this should crush any glimmer of hope that Jim Caldwell can save his job.

Brady does, & I'm a Patriots fan. Though to his credit he'll only amp it up on repeated ticky tack stuff - either stuff against them, or non calls on the D.

Sorry to the vikings also

Yep...there went our hopes for a division title...but I say that with control of our own destiny...the Vikes needed God's Team to keep on derping...so that says enough.

My reactions; as close to "in order" as I can recall:

  • That really should be enough to propel them to the division title; maybe even the Super Bowl.
  • Remembered how you all on this site complain that close games are all randomly decided.
  • I am no football coach, but I am pretty sure rushing three and lining the other 8 along the back line of the end zone is not how to defend a hail mary.
  • I wonder what's going to happen in Week 17 when Peppers's thumb grazes Bridgewater's facemask...
  • ...related; Only two QB's could have completed that Hail Mary; Brady and Rodgers.

No. Those kind of responses are reserved for when the more important team comes up on the short end.

After tonight, it's doubly bull :censored: that the refs took a hail mary chance away from the Bills last Monday.

This league blows.

Were we watching the same game? I know the Packers won, but they did NOT look good in that win. If anything, I feel even less confident about them after tonight.

This league blows.

a. Watkins was going towards his own end zone as he scooted out of bounds last week. By rule, the clock continues to run. Game over.

b. As far as tonight goes, just like Brady does or Jordan did back in the day, a megastar like Aaron Rodgers is gonna get that call every time. It's on the Lions tackler to keep his damn hand away from A-Rodg's facemask, especially when they have him dead-to-rights.

c. To compound it, the Lions then allowed a 70-yard hail freaking mary. Richard Rodgers even made that catch look routine! They straight up Lion'd it and deserved the "L".

I know that the good Packers tend to be the Lions by three TDs and not on a hail mary...but this is the kind of play that I could see being more of an "intangible" jolt that they needed.

Just saw the replay on that play.

Absolutely terrible call. Should not have been called under any circumstance, let alone the last play of a game. The referees again determined not only the outcome of a game, but also impacted several teams.

The action on the field simply doesn't matter anymore. It's just window dressing. I don't think that the referees or the league rigged the game - if that was the case, it wouldn't have come down to a very low percentage hail mary play - but they definitely over-officiated and directly impacted the result.

The league sucks.

Let's all not-fondly recall when the NFL blew the hell out of call in the Buccaneers-Lions game in 2010. A phantom offensive PI call on Kellen Winslow took a 4th quarter TD off the board in a game the Bucs would lose in overtime. The NFL apologized for getting the call wrong, but the outcome stood. Tampa finished with 10 wins, but so did the Packers. That win the NFL took from the Bucs kept them out of the playoffs and lead to a Packers championship.

Now, the facemask call was horrible. It was very close, and I can see why a ref would call it that way on the field. However, this is why the NFL is crap. That should be challengeable. They built the rules of replay around "we don't want to admit that our refs make horrible calls." This game was over. You absolutely cannot let a call like that restart the game and change the outcome (and obviously the Lions blew it on the last play, and blew it in general).

In not letting that be reviewed, the NFL is basically saying ":censored: you, that's why." And that's their hole replay system. We don't want the refs to look bad. We don't want to slow down the game, so we'll let egregious crap go. Even with stuff they do allow you to challenge, you only have 2 per game. That's crap! You get a third if you get them both right? So if you get one wrong, but the refs blow 2 other calls against you, you're screwed? If the refs blow 5 calls against you, you're screwed no matter what? If the NFL was interested in getting it right, they'd give each coach 2 unsuccessful challenges before pulling the plug, so unlimited challenges of bad calls. But they're not, and they don't mind being embarrassed because people still watch and gamble on it.
