What's up with all the __________ II/2 rebrandings??

*Disclaimer: I am not an authoritative expert on stuff...I just do a lot of reading and research and keep in close connect with a bunch of people who are authoritative experts on stuff. 😁

Having just moved to the Philly area, and not knowing that Steel FC played there last year, I am kind of excited for this. I can't always afford to take my family to MLS games, but I would expect that USL games will be slightly cheaper to go to and I can go to those more often in between going to MLS Union games.

Having the 2 name in a way saves them money because its a minor tweak to the main logo (in most cases) and they can use the extra uniforms and equipment they are ready have with the parent teams branding.

I've just been surprised, but maybe not, that all these teams have found more value in running their minor-league teams as pure reserve squads (parent branding, same stadium or close by), rather than the classic MiLB model of a smaller-city farm club (different enough branding and far enough to carve out its own fanbase).

Particularly at the same time that Manfred & co. want to take a cleaver to the classic minor-league model in baseball.

Yeah, that’s what I would have expected.  Wonder why they did it this way?

I can't say with 100 certainty, but I assume it's the same reason why any USL team does what they do with their branding. They at one point planned on releasing everything this season, scheduled an unveiling (which was probably scheduled a decent amount in advance), and after they flew past that point of no return, they realized they just didn't have the logistics/resources in place to actually make that happen. Things like this often times happen when something unforeseen takes place that dramatically changes the original plan.

Just a theory, so take it for what it's worth, but maybe the figured sales of the existing stuff was going to wane anyway, so they'll begin selling 2021 merch now and squeeze an extra year of sales out of it. It's not like the logos are all that different from one another.

Maybe, but most USL clubs barely move the needle in terms of merch sales. Outside of Sacramento, Phoenix, and maybe one or two other random teams, the return is barely enough to justify producing it. I think it's more likely that something happened to disrupt their original plans and they were left with no other choice.

That would make sense. Does the USL have a deadline for new crests?  Perhaps they blew past it for this upcoming season but wanted to start working the new design through the pipeline anyway.

Yes, but it depends on if it's full scale change or just a minor tweak (It's not quite as strict as some of the leagues we're used to). We made some tweaks before this past season, and I believe the deadline for submission was January 1st. Anything that's a noticeable change has to be submitted by the summertime the year prior. Our kits, if there is any change, have to be produced WELL in advance. I wouldn't be surprised if they simply weren't able to get the physical product produced (Even in sample form) in time to submit them.

Submission for uniforms is a pretty interesting process, too. Once you get the kits from the manufacturer, you have to produce four of them (Home, road, and the two goalie kits) fully badged (crest, sponsorship patches, name/numbers, league patch) and actually ship the physical samples off to the league for approval, and they keep them (No idea what they do with them beyond that, though). Republic had an issue where the kit submission date was before they were supposed to get the order of the updated crests in. We ended up badging everything up and just using the old kit crest (which the league approved) on the sample kits. Nobody ever noticed because our changes were so minor, but we played the entire season with a mix of the two different crests on the game kits (Each player gets two sets of every kit). I thought it was rather jarring, and REALLY noticeable, but it was also cool because I was the only one who knew for sure which set each player was wearing. I could tell instantly if a player had changed into their second kit at half due to that. Weird little observation, but I always thought that was cool.

San Diego Loyal SC is featuring the SD "sun/wordmark" part of their crest on some of their initial wave of apparel.

Hope it catches on as a primary on caps & co!

Still dig the colors, but it's also still a terrible name.

Also: "Along with additional merchandise, the club’s official jerseys are slated to debut in early 2020."

It is a terrible name, but I get why the team is named that.  It's Landon Donovan's way of saying "we will be in San Diego forever"

Charleston Battery got a new crest.

I’ll miss the old one, but I’m glad the new one is not a complete piece of trash. Kinda wish they used a different font instead of Agency, but everything else looks spot on.

Their new crest is an upgrade from the previous one. Anytime a club doesn't have a soccer ball on its crest is a win.
