Padres' Fowler getting close to waving brown flag on uniforms [UPDATED: it’s official!]

Recommended Posts

The Padres are ABSOLUTELY going to keep at least some sort of navy option, I’m sure of it. If that’s the camo alt or not, I’m not sure, but it’ll be some sort of military theme tie in. There is no way the owners are as enamored with navy as they are and just ditch it completely. As much as I dislike the current boring navy look, if they shifted that to some sort of a once a week alt, I’d be fine with that.

That HatClub cap is a re-creation of the 1985 prototype that the Padres considered but rejected.

I like the subtle "P" at the intersection between the S and the D but it's a bit too bold to really work as a cap logo

The brown/gold was before my time, and I prefer the blue/orange look from the 90s, but if this is happening I’d prefer a pinstripe home with Padres in script, the ‘69 road grays, a brown alt with the SD over the left side, and a Taco Bell inspired BP cap with the swinging friar.

I greatly prefer the block letters from the late 60s/early 70s design than a cursive script. A modern brown/gold touch-up of that early aesthetic would be perfect for them. I would totally ditch the 70s wordmark because its kind of dated despite being somewhat iconic.

So I'll be the first one to ask... are they gonna completely drop the camo unis or are those gonna still be in the uniform rotation somehow? I think the best way to make this transition is to go 100% brown with no navy blue or camo alternates muddling up the identity but I find it hard to believe that they're gonna drop the military appreciation gimmick cold turkey.

Not likely. The "Team of the Military" in probably THE Military town in MLB will undoubtedly continue to have a military homage jersey for every Sunday home game where they host the USMC recruits from MCRD.

If the Padres want to have brown and camo, well, they already did that several years ago and I actually liked it.

Just make the nob, number and script stand out and it could be decent. Yellow could work but you could also get rid of the camo entirely.

The Padres have an opportunity to do what Toronto did in 2012--after a decade plus of mediocre-to-bad uniforms, they can look to their roots and, with a few small tweaks and updates, produce a new modern classic.

Whether the organization pulls it off remains to be seen.

Sounds like he's describing the brown alt, and maybe also the cap logo. White lettering, piping, and logo. Maybe something like this:

A good amount of white to prevent a "hot dogs slathered with mustard" or "UPS driver" look that the writer joked about in the article. Fowler laughing while mentioning that there's a lot of white seems like a response to these type of jokes from the writer that must have been said to him.

Image may contain: 11 people, shoes and outdoor

This Wyoming uniform is a good example of "brown, yellow, and a lot of white". Minus the white panel cap, I could see something like this with the brown alt.

Is it officially confirmed that the Padres are going brown for 2020 or just speculation still?

Probably no phones/no pictures/no hard copies/no talking rules.

Probably this, plus any non-disclosure agreements that were signed.

That's the best idea yet.

Having been a part of focus groups, every person involved takes them very seriously.  The participants as well as the professionals.

Even if they don't take your phone on the way in (which sometimes does happen), there's no opportunity to take pictures without other people in the group knowing that you're doing it and therefore risking their ire.

Yes, and no. There's not much from their history of uniforms in brown that's worth updating like the Blue Jays did. The Padres are better served coming up with something that doesn't suck.

I think the Padres' very first uniforms were the best they ever looked.
