The Sports Impact of COVID-19

As a Jazz fan, that’s where I’m at. It was stupid of Rudy to do that, even if he didn’t know that he was infected at the time. I’m just about positive that he wasn’t the first player to actually get the virus, given how subtle it seems to be to most people—professional athletes included—but you just can’t goof around like that with such a contagious illness that can adversely affect even a small portion of the population.

My gut says that the NBA (and possibly other leagues) will suspend games for about 2-ish weeks, then maybe do a slow rollout after that (maybe a week or 2 without fans, then allow them back) in time for the playoffs.

Ideally, what I hope comes out of this is that this becomes a tough learning experience for everyone involved: the leagues, the players, the fans, networks, and sponsors. I’m not sure that will quite be the case, especially in the case of the latter two, but only time will tell.

I'm sure he didn't.  He was mocking the precautions and feeling invincible.  A high-profile example of what a lot of people are doing.

Disclaimer: If this comment is about an NBA uniform from 2017-2018 or later, do not constitute a lack of acknowledgement of the corporate logo to mean anything other than "the corporate logo is terrible and makes the uniform significantly worse."

NHL has suspended most activities today. $20 says they cancel before the end of the day.

I have a co-worker who has Leafs tickets for tonight, she received a message saying that the game is suspended and the tickets will be valid at another date TBD. So I guess we'll hear something any moment from the league.

I'm not as anti-college sports and anti-NCAA as most people here.

But cancel the tournament, you greedy bastards.

I suppose we're not supposed to talk about the non-sports angle, but I think Gobert is a great ironic story of the way people have been downplaying this.  I hope this part of it gets out...it may help.

Totally agree. If anything to save potential lawsuits coming down the road as a result of playing. And while reactive is good, proactive is better. And while i would love to see sports continue at least for the next couple of weeks it's better to take the rather safe than sorry road. And Golbert is in the running for idiot of the year.

At this point the big question is whether the leagues are cancelling the season, or just suspending it.

Suspending leaves hope that maybe they can resume at some point (even if it’s just playoffs)

Rather than completely scraping an entire season.
But at this point the latter seems more likely.

I usually avoid making statements like this because it’s pretty dramatic, but this is probably the craziest thing I’ve ever seen.

The last time the world just kinda stopped like this was probably 9/11.

Well, if it wasn’t clear already, it is now. Sports is done. All conferences except the MEAC (as of me typing this) have cancelled their tournaments, with the NCAA likely making the decision later today to cancel the big one. I won’t be surprised if/when the NHL suspends the season. After that, all the leagues remaining will fall in line eventually.

And even that was only for a couple of days, at least in the sports world.

The Wells Fargo Center has been shut down so it will be interesting to see what the Flyers will do if the season continues uninterrupted.

I can see Bettman in his ivory tower saying, "We only stop for labor issues!"

Kansas and Duke are suspending all athletic travel.  They need to delay the tournament.

They have to now right? 3 of the 4 Big 4 leagues have suspended/or are expected to suspend operations, Conf. Champ tourneys are being cancelled, or held without fans. The NCAA has to act sooner rather than later.

it has affected the NFL offseason.  Teams have suspended travel of coaches and scouts, and I think Pro Days are suspended as well.

What a complete and total tool.  Breathtaking arrogance - perhaps literally for anyone who develops the severe respiratory symptoms covid can cause.

Hopefully he learns something from this and dedicates some part of the rest of his life to being better.
