I think it's the way that both the tentacle and eye interact with the beveling: the eye really shines because the dark bevel and light top create a feeling of the brow being furrowed, giving the mysterious kraken an angry expression without actually giving it an angry expression. The tentacle also interacts quite nicely with the light and dark sides of the logo will not quite working on the flat version. I'm shocked to say this, but the beveling is used masterfully and might actually be necessary for the logo to work as well as it does. Just another way Seattle killed it.

Update: I bought a Kraken hoodie at Costco. It's the workmark and logo printed on a dark heather gray Champion-branded athletic hoodie. It was $25 and I think it was an excellent purchase.

Interesting.

99 times out of a hundred I’ll go for the simpler version of anything.

But here?  Something is lost without the beveling.  Just doesn’t work as well in a flat version.

I wasn’t a fan of the bevel at first. Admittedly, that was coming from a place of personal preference because it’s a technique that’s been both overused and (especially) misused over the years. When it makes sense, though, it can really add something to a simple piece.

It started as a nod to those hand-carved quarterboards, but as the color scheme came together, it began to evoke the unique tone of underwater lighting really well, and I can’t even imagine it without anymore.

I still don't have a website, but I have a dribbble now! http://dribbble.com/andyharry

That’s it.

I reserve the right to hate the next beveled logo, but I don’t think this one would work nearly so well without it.

Perfect partners too. I love Kraken Rum.

I know some will hate it, but I think this ad proves just how unique and compelling the Kraken branding is going to be.  There's nothing else like it in any major sport.  This is pure fun.  Pure gold.  I'm already anticipating an amazing pre-game projected lightshow on the ice where it looks like the ice is crackin open and falling in, revealing a dark hole where a single glowing eye appears.    Kids are going to eat up all the Kraken stuff and a whole generation of hockey fans will be born (as the creaky old gripey hockey fans die off).

But what is all the "kraken stuff"?  The whole thing falls apart if you have a big-cuddly squid mascot, or anything that really shows off what the whole kraken looks like.  It's also weird to have toys that are just severed tentacles.  Curious what they do about that.

Yeah I'm curious too. I think it's going to be hard to avoid depicting the Kraken itself at some point. It can't remain a mystery forever, and that's kind of what they're playing off right now. They can still keep the Kraken 'in the shadows' for the most part but I do wonder about the effectiveness of that when you have revealed a Kraken character in kids promotional material and the mascot and other stuff like that.

Story B: Red Wings go undefeated and score 100 goals in every game. They also beat a team comprised of Godzilla, the ghost of Abraham Lincoln, 2 Power Rangers and Betty White. Oh, and they played in the middle of Iraq on a military base. In the sand. With no ice. Santa gave them special sand-skates that allowed them to play in shorts and t-shirts in 115 degree weather. Jesus, Zeus and Buddha watched from the sidelines and ate cotton candy.

So that's where the Japanese porn companies get them from.

When the Kraken name became official, I was absolutely furious. Still not a fan of the name but at least, it's far better than Minnesota "Wild" because the team can still be called the "Kraks", like the "Avs", "Pens", "Preds" & "Isles". The simplicity of the S crest, the Space Needle anchor secondary & the colours are beautiful.

I mean, yeah those names aren't ideal but you get used to them. The Wild hasn't bothered me for a while - I just don't think about it. It's just there. The Avs, Preds, Lightning, Golden Knights, Canes etc... they're, fine. The Kraken will fit comfortably in that group I think. You'll just get used to it and many will probably grow to like more than they do right now.
