I wonder if they scrapped the product altogether or are simply working to correct the copious mistakes.

I would never buy any of those, and I can't speak for every city/state, but I can think of a lot of people in Maryland who would probably love that Orioles cap.  The same type who went out and bought all the Orioles gear with all the Maryland flag designs on it.  There's more people out there than you might think, who would actually think that cap is "straight fire" (at least in Maryland).  They see the Oriole bird, the crab, the 410, and they're convinced they need it.  If there is a Maryland flag patch somewhere on there, that would probably help it sell even better.

Well, I'm from MD and that cap is garbage.  BTW,  MLB, 13 stars with 1776 is more appropriate for a Philly cap than for a city that didn't exist for another 14 years.

To be fair, this cap is a straight up BANGER, and I definitely bought one (returned it because it was too small, but still...).

I've lived in the Baltimore area on-and-off for over 25 years, and while I know not everyone would like that cap, there is a large segment of the population here that would absolutely love it.  If you're from Baltimore, you've got to know the type of people I'm talking about.  The "Baltimorons," if you will.

I think this ties into what I was saying earlier: baseball is simply too traditional for its own good. Too many players and fans unwilling to do things because "this is how it was always done." Teams too afraid to experiment with jersey colors and designs because you are "supposed" to wear white at home and gray on the road.

 

While I think the NBA might have gone too far in a few places when it comes to jerseys, one thing you can't fault them for is not being afraid to buck tradition. The whole idea of you wear white at home and colors on the road seems to be a thing of the past. And you know what? That's okay with me. There are still quite a few teams that have white jerseys and wear them at home. But I'll say this: the NBA has a lot of unique identities. Now, of course, it's an issue when a team has something like four jerseys with four different templates and colors. But that's a case of bad tactics while agreeing with the overall strategy. It's something that can be fixed on a team-by-team basis.

I hope. They only put one area code on ours (Rays) and it wasn't even the one the Rays play in...

My guess is that they're discovering that people don't like to be defined by regional stereotypes. And doing so ends always ends up unintentionally alienating parts of  your audience. Like the area codes on the front of the hats:  @SpenserRM already mentioned the Rays' example, which is hilarious.  Some markets have multiple area codes. Others, like St. Louis has just one -- in this case, it's 314, which is accurate, but a big chunk of the metro area is also under the 618 number.  And with the food examples: does all of Southern California -- the Dodgers, Angels and Padres -- really embrace tacos as one of its defining symbols? 

 

The interesting part of this to me? It actually makes me hate Nike's city-centric MLB and NBA program a little less. I mean, I still hate it, but Nike seemed to at least put a little thought into designs that invoke regionalism without taking a big handful of low-hanging fruit.

Yeah this is all true but there's a lot of bad hats out there that get plenty of criticism and hate especially through social media and they don't get pulled. So the backlash on this one had to be beyond bad for them to pull this thing within hours.

The Mets and Yankees had the same exact designs. The Bronx and Queens could not be anymore different from each other. These hats were so lazily put together, how could anyone accept these?

These were so bad, that New Era only put the area code 813 on the Rays cap.  813 isn't even where they play, they play in 727.  Not discounting the fact that some hats had multiple area codes, and they totally miffed the actual area code for St Pete.

Agreed.  I think the difference here is that you can overlook criticism of a few bad designs. But when a whole product line is so bad that it becomes newsworthy, then you have a problem.

Marlins and Rays had the exact same designs too and that's two cities like 5 hours apart from each other.

 

Anyone check if the Dodgers and Angels or other similar cities had matching designs?

I'm fine with pullovers returning. But certain teams should never have a pullover. The Yankees and Dodgers come to mind -- they never went pullover. The Phillies never went pullover,  either, save for the time Pete Rose wore his maroon BP top in the '79 ASG.

 

The Red Sox, Cubs, Cardinals, Giants and Tigers (road) should fall in that category, too, even though they succumbed to the '70s trends. And I would not want to see them return to that.

 

Everyone else? Have at it, though I still prefer buttons to pullovers.

The Blue Jays hat is hilariously lazy. They just copy/pasted the maple leaf from the logo, and slapped a generic "Toronto" pennant on the side. Fantastic.
