I will scream this from the rooftops every time these uniforms are brought up: WHY THE HELL DID THE RAMS HALFASS A SWITCH TO BLUE AND WHITE AND THEN JUST COMPLETELY THROW IT AWAY LIKE 3 YEARS LATER. IT LOOKED SO FREAKING BAD AND MADE NO SENSE, EVEN MORE SO WHEN THEY UNVEILED THEIR NEW SET

The white elements were to ingratiate themselves with the old LA fanbase, and, then the rebrand was an attempt to make as much money as possible by chasing trends

They would have been so much better off just making a jersey to fit that blue/white scheme. Those helmets are sharp. Just made no sense with the gold trimmed jersey.

The problem is, they had planned to drop new unis with the new stadium (as they did IRL). Had they adjusted the jersey in, say, 2018, it would have reset the 5-year (or 2 year in advance) clock, thus no longer aligning with said stadium.

I actually kinda like the "ink drop" ones, I just wish the conference wasn't on there. Who cares what conference the team's in?

I remember people not wanting GreenBay to wear a green color rush uniform,  Those same people hated the 49ers all black uniform..but If it were a Falcons uniform, with a touch of white,  people would love it. Its so crazy how fickle people can be.

I'm not sure how those are related in your mind. Care to explain?

1 - People generally seemed opposed to a team like Green Bay, Las Vegas or Chicago from participating in color rush as their uniforms are (again, generally) considered timeless or not to be tinkered with.

2 - The Niners used a color that, while on their helmet, isn't really a team color.

3 - I have no idea where you're going with the Falcons uniform.

IDK, the black 49ers uniform is up there with the worst NFL uniforms of all-time. The only other ones that I think looks worse were when the Rams wore their white-horned helmets and new white/blue pants with their gold/navy jersey.

both of these images are depressing to look at

Imagine if Tampa Bay kept these uniforms for 1 more season. Brady's Buccaneers could have won Super Bowl LV in these. 🤣

Stuns me that the Rams have won the same amount of Super Bowls in these helmets

Unpopular opinion: I didn't hate these. In fact, with different numbers and a different facemask treatment they could've been great.

All they had to do was make the top helmet the color of the bottom helmet.

Nothing about that Bucs uniform was good. Every decision was a downgrade. And in an act of divine providence the team won another Super Bowl after dropping it, proving that the uniform gods are just 😛

On a more serious note... let's compare them to the set they replaced, specifically looking at what changed.

Number font- This is the most glaring one. Going from a standard but timeless block font to some weird alarm clock metallic... thing... was the wrong move. Nothing about this was a good idea.

Colours- The red and orange. They went from crimson and burnt orange to a brighter red and orange. This is, in my estimation, a downgrade. The older, darker colours had more character given the team's name and what the colours were originally trying to invoke.

The pewter also suffered. Wilson Athletics could make sparkly pewter pants in 1997, but Nike (the same company that can't make a kelly green football jersey) can't replicate that ancient magic, apparently. So the pewter got downgraded to flat, dirty brown.

Striping- The first Super Bowl set was pretty standard as far as football uniforms go, but it worked. The set they replaced it with was indicative of all of Nike's worst impulses of the mid 2010s. Shards of colour at weird angles, that went nowhere. Their pants and the Jags' pants of the same era, are both examples of this (same with the Titans' current uniform). It was "modern" but that was six, seven years ago modern. If you look at what teams are coming out with now...that style is already starting to look dated.

There's also the fact that the striping of this uniform included a pewter yoke on the jerseys. Not only was this a mistake conceptually- pewter works best for the Bucs limited to the pants and helmets- but because of the above mentioned changes it just looked like dirty brown. No one wants to buy a dirty brown shirt.

Facemask- going from black to chrome was such a bad move.

Logo placement- some like the giant logo. To me it looks like college football garbage. The current uniform splits the difference.

Far less contentious I think is the decision to randomly replace one of the sleeve logos with a "BUCS" wordmark. Why? In what way is that a good idea?

Logos- some like the "updated" logos. To me they're over-produced. The 1997 logos looked properly pirate-y. Something worn and weathered. The logos introduced in 2014 were too sleek, and the metallic skull is just dumb. I'm pretty bummed that the team didn't toss the new logos in 2019, but whatever. Recolouring them in the old colours improved them slightly.

To me the entirety of the 2014-2019 set was a failure. Nike's mid 2010s trend chasing at its almost worst, only saved from total embarrassment because Jacksonville found a way to do the same sort of thing but with worse helmets around the same time.

Yes. That 1000%.

The current Bucs set is pretty decent, but doesn’t hold a candle to the original super bowl set, which top to bottom is my favorite sports uniform set of all time. Them walking away from the original flag logo for this updated robo looking crap is such a bad move. Like, I’ll take the current look over the monstrosity that it replaced, but it’s still a huge downgrade from the original set. It’s like having something great that gets terribly damaged. They tried to straighten it all back out, but you can still see that it’s a little wonky and crooked, and just isn’t quite the same as it once was.

I'm surprised to see the Bengals using their helmet instead of the striped B.

Yeah I think they wanted to remove as much metallic gold as possible to distance themselves from St. Louis, but they didn't want to make wholesale changes to the uniform until they moved into the new stadium. At least they were able to wear the throwbacks for the Super Bowl.

For the rebrand their market research showed that most of the fanbase wanted royal & yellow as the colours. I think they knew that the diehard Rams fans who lived in the city would be buying tickets regardless, so they included all the hypebeast elements as a way to try and attract new fans who grew up without an NFL team in town.

I love IceCap's response about the Buccaneers.

I know this is re-iterating, but it's remarkable how that first round of Nike re-designs was SO BAD that EACH TEAM that gave them the keys to the car changed their mind.

Buccaneers: went back to Nike after 5 years and said "yeah, thanks but no thanks." Imagine being the creatives who worked on that, only to see them revert to their previous look?

Browns: went back to Nike after 5 years and said "yeah, thanks, but no thanks." Imagine being the creatives who worked on that, only to see them revert to their previous look?

Jaguars: went back to Nike after 5 years and said "yeah, thanks, but even though we didn't have a classic uniform to revert back to, can we just ...look, Tom Coughlin basically just said you can't do design anything."

Nike: "Wait, not anything?"

Jaguars: "Please put numbers on jerseys in our colors and ship them out, thank you."

Shockingly the Bucs horrible, horrible unis lasted one year past their expiration date. Meaning that while the Jags and Browns took 3 years at the very most, maybe less, to regret their overhaul, for the Bucs it took them exactly four years to reconsider. I wonder what switch flipped then. Glad it did, in any case.

Also, who can believe that we’re going into year 10 of those Vikings unis? They knocked it so hard out of the park that they could wear those for the next 20 years at least and I don’t think a single person would complain. Especially now that they brought back white on white😍

It's easy to be lost when you don't know the starting point.  I was alluding to a previous post about how even though the Falcons and Jets uniforms aren't traditional, they still have consistent elements that don't clash or look out of place. Clean and modern. The post also points out that even teams with universally loved uniforms can look bad with the wrong color balance and top/bottom combo.
