PPS: This past week was the exact right way to use a throwback. It should be as a once-in-a-blue moon special occasion with a REASON behind it. Using throwbacks as standard alternates drives me crazy.

What if the throwback uniform is much better than the main uniform, and what if the main uniform is garbage on top of that?

Miami and San Francisco need to see this

No they don’t. Especially Miami. If anything, Miami needs to make the throwbacks their primary look and ditch the toothpaste dolphin altogether.

That’d be more or less the point being made. Fans like throwbacks because:

a) they recall a bygone era of the franchise’s history, and

b) they look good

So you wear a throwback once for an anniversary and everyone goes nuts. Wow, so retro! They look so good! So you wear it a second time and now you’ve got a good thing going. Everybody gets hyped when the throwbacks come out, so now they’re the main alt in the rotation. The rule changes so that you can wear them for nearly half of your home games and they let you add another one, so now here comes the road version from the same era. In any given week you could look like the 2020’s version of your team or the 1970’s version. Fire emojis are reaching critical mass. The throwbacks look so good and everybody is having a good time. This is all good, right?

But what about the other 14 games? What if the normal jersey is so boring that it exists only as a foil to the beautiful throwbacks? The problem isn’t that they shouldn’t have the throwbacks. No, it’s that if the throwbacks are good enough to wear for 3 games a year, then there’s no reason that they shouldn’t be worn for 17. It’s farcical that teams will wear good uniforms that everyone loves for 20% of the season and lame uniforms that nobody writes home about for the rest.

Im talking specifically about the Dolphins of course, though a similar story goes for any team who has a crummy modern uniform in the first five chambers and a sweet throwback in the sixth. If it looks good enough to bring back, it’s more than likely because the current one doesn’t look good enough to have replaced it.

While I agree that the Dolphins need to go to the throwback uniforms, there still needs to be some tweaks.

1. Updated logo that looks like it was rendered on a computer

2. Less thick number outlines

3. Consistent helmet and pants striping

Unpopular opinion (?): I like the Dolphins uniforms, especially after the 2018 tweaks. I think it's a smart update of a classic, not dissimilar to what the Vikings did. I much prefer the helmeted cartoon dolphin as a throwback.

I feel like the Dolphins are a case of really good uniforms, really bad logo. I have no problem with the uniforms themselves (I really like them, actually), but if a uniform change to something throwback-inspired is what it would take to get rid of the belly flop dolphin once and for all, then I favor that option. It’s ultimately better to have your whole identity in order rather than just a part of it, and I feel like that switch would cover all the bases well.

The logo on their current uniforms are 1000x better than the ones on the throwbacks. I don't really love any of their logos they've had, although I like the concept in general. They just haven't quite gotten the execution down. I'd like to see them split the difference in cartooniness between their 90's logo and their current logo, with the overall shape of the 90's logo.

Meanwhile, teams wear throwbacks for variety, to mix it up, for nostalgia, for fun...and people love them.

Smart is believing half of what you hear. Genius is knowing which half.

That’s why I said “throwback-inspired” rather than direct throwback; I don’t want the old logo back as-is, it needs a fair bit of cleaning up to work today. But I do like your suggestion of splitting the difference, I think the right Dolphins logo can be found in that area. And definitely agree that it ought to follow the general shape of the 90’s logo, which was much better structurally. My biggest gripes with the Dolphins current logo is the belly flop position that I can’t unsee, and it also looks really awkward and sometimes over-tilted on a helmet. It’s just bad in concept and function.

We’re in a really weird place with design right now. Do you know that most people, when designing on a computer, work really hard to make it look as though it wasn’t made by a machine?  If you told the average professional designer “hey, I like your work, it looks really computer generated” I doubt they’d take that as a compliment.

C'mon OSV, you know what I mean...

No one wants to see this logo return in the way it's designed above because of how poorly hand-drawn the dolphin is. It needs to be somewhere in between the 1997-2012 dolphin and this one.

When I say "rendered on a computer", I mean making it look like it was made using graphic design software.

Yeah, I knew what you meant. I wasn't really trying to have a go at you.

It just made me think about the guy who came on the board a few years back requesting someone make him a logo to submit for his high school contest. He said it wasn't fair because he couldn't afford "logo making software." As though a pencil, a piece of paper, and his hands aren't perfectly acceptable logo making hardware.

And people also love BFBS,  GFGS, mono white, leotard socks, and NBA city edition uniforms (which are only slightly more off-brand than throwbacks). So what?
