2022-2023 NHL Jersey Changes

With the new pants, the Sharks run into the same problem that the Oilers & Blackhawks deal with. The pant stripe matches the white jersey perfectly (a white stripe surrounded by black & teal), but it doesn't match the teal jersey striping.

I also agree that the black numbers don't really fit with the teal-heavy look. If they were using black pants it would work better. It feels a bit like when the Avs first switched to blue equipment but still had the black numbers on the away jersey.

The all teal look of the homes is fantastic and the pants look great with the white uniform too. They've gone from a very "meh" set to one of my favourites in the NHL.

Maybe they could have tweaked the logo to remove some of the orange bits, but I also think they're subtle enough to the point where they're not too distracting. It's still a great logo.

My apologies for the crappy quality, did this really quick in paint and then had to take a cell phone pic because I did it on a work computer and couldn’t send to myself. But it gets the point across. Also apologies if a concept like this exists already, but if they tweaked the logo to look like this it would have fit well Sharks concept primary logo

edit: It doesn’t come across well on the cell phone pic, but the stick is supposed to be the same color as the stick from the inaugural logo

Come to think of it these are sort of like the teal version of these Hurricanes uniforms and I don't hate that at all.

I think the black numbers on the white jerseys are the right choice because it balances out the teal pants. Teal numbers would've been fine too, but I think the black numbers look sharp.

I am sort of baffled by the pushback on the orange in the logo and I don't really care about that detail. It's a small stripe, they've used orange in the stick since day one (or some color close to that), and there's a long history of teams using colors in their logos that don't appear elsewhere in the jersey to the point that it's pretty ignorable.

I think the only thing I want to change about these new Sharks unis is the stripe pattern on the road jersey. I would like teal on the outside instead I think. It would make it feel more like teal is still the dominant color. The way it is currently, the black sort of dominates.

Edit: After looking at them again, I realized I worded this incorrectly. I think I want to see it where the black stripes and middle white stripe is switched. Teal-white-black-white-teal instead of teal-black-white-black-teal.

Beautiful color and works perfectly with the white jersey, but all-teal is a little much for me. I think white jersey/teal pants and teal jersey/black pants would be an ideal look.

The new number font almost gives me Fishsticks vibes but it's still an improvement over too-chunky block.

I like this tweak of the home striping:

Makes both of these more directly linked to the original set and just feels better overall. Keeps the black stripes in the same place on both jerseys and feel more tertiary to teal and white.

the best thing of this is the new fin logo. I really want something with that on it.

Yes! This is EXACTLY what came to mind when I first saw these. Not sure why “Teal Hurricanes” popped into my head so hard, but that’s spot on how I feel about these. Mono in hockey is weird because unlike some other sports, it’s totally acceptable. I’m actually surprised how well the teal works as a mono color. It’s very unique, yet still dark enough to not be gaudy. Sort of how the hurricanes red or Maple Leafs blue feels to me (well, not so much the uniqueness, but more the color balance).

I've always kind of thought the Red Wings and Hurricanes and any other all red hockey uniform looks kind of weird because it's just so much of that color. We're just used to it because teams have been doing it since forever. Red is about the brightest color you can go and still pull off a mono uniform. All Yellow for example, like we saw with the LA Kings, looks really silly. I generally prefer uniforms that contrast the jersey/socks with the pants and helmet. Teal, though, works a lot better than I thought it would and is a fun departure from the expected route of black helmets and pants (And I'm glad they didn't do that because if they'd gone with black pants/helmets then they might as well just use the original unis at that point.)

I think it's because there's enough horizontal striping on most hockey uniforms to break up the color so you don't get the leotard-effect that you do with football uniforms.

Plus, there's a clear break between the pants and the socks. And the socks are always properly worn and generally striped so it's broken up as you said.

I LOVE that rebranded/old shoulder logo.  Fierce.

Canes are bringing back their original look as an alternate.   They really should just wear these full time….

As nice as it is to have these back, I still much prefer the Adidas-era red jerseys. These were fine in the 2000s, but they look a little dated by today's standards.

The Islanders have formally unveiled their 50th Anniversary patch. No Chromaflex as initially predicted, and it looks much better than I was expecting.

the placement makes me wonder: no jersey patches for the isles? wouldn't surprise me, considering lou's affinity for tradition. they do, however, have helmet ads, so who knows.

What looks dated about them? They're far and away the best uniforms in franchise history. The reds they just got rid of have some elements that are better (replacing a lot of the silver with black) but its flaws (ghosted warning stripe, generic/weak number font) bring it down. Their perfect jersey would be the 2017-2021 reds but with the NOB/numbers of the originals and a non-ghosted warning stripe.

The black ones are fine as an alternate, although I much prefer the old stick and flag logo to the new one. If they can't wear them responsibly (not as a primary and NEVER in the playoffs), then burn them. Every iteration of the Whalers jerseys has been puke-inducing.

I'm thrilled to see their signature look finally come back after a decade. I just wish it wasn't an anniversary year one off.

"What looks dated about them?" he says, before rattling off half the reasons they look dated.

They're not bad jerseys by any means, but I'd much rather see them stick with their Adidas jerseys. About a third of the league has adopted direct thowbacks full time. Slapping an old jersey on a new template is boring, lazy, and uninspired if you ask me. I'd much rather see teams build on their identities while honoring the past like the Sharks, Avs, Bruins, Leafs, and (formerly) Canes have.

The Canes were one of the best-looking teams in the league with their Adidas jerseys, and it sucks to see them throw it away — especially in favor of that ugly-as-sin black jersey.
