I concur:

"Gary and the NHL have destroyed the viewing experience with ads on the jerseys, all over the ice, and moving digital board ads.

Long time fan here, i have migrated to the NBA.

Sad, but NHL on TV is now just way too distracting.

Destroying the jerseys and cup patches as well."

During the regular season during a casual game, they are extremely annoying. But when the game becomes a lot more fast-paced during the playoffs, I barely notice the moving ads because I'm too intensely focused on the action on the ice.

I hope Gary Bettman doesn't find out because he'll just ad more ads.

Yeah, the animated boards don't bug me. It's the ice ads that drive me nuts. Hell, I'd have ten ads on the jerseys if it meant taking all ten (virtual and real) off the ice. Uni ads suck, but ads on the field of play are a bridge too far and, IMO, looks even more garage league than uni ads. And this is from someone who isn't old enough to remember the days before neutral zone and boards ads.

Ice graphics should be the home team's center ice design of choice, the arena name, and other things for special occasions such as the Playoffs and the Final.

Devils posted this on IG, apparently the center ice logo isn’t painted onto the floor, it’s more of a vinyl wrap maybe? edit: Maybe that wrap being washed has nothing to do with center ice (the “outer” circle in the video is black, but the center ice circle is blue for games).

Always thought crews painted everything.

It really depends on the team. I'd imagine most on-ice ads are those vinyl wraps and some teams use them for center ice as well. But there is still a chunk of teams painting the ice. Here's a video of the Red Wings from the beginning of this season.

Right, and that is good for you.... but people are  all different, and  lots of folks can't handle distractions like these.

And that is what they are, and that is how this thing was designed, to be distracting and draw the eyes to the ads, why else should they move!!?

And i am sadly one of those that can't handle it.

Actually no, that's not correct. I do not like the moving board ads anywhere, not during the regular season, not during the playoffs, nor the Stanley Cup Final. Slightly less bad doesn't make them good. Just wanna clarify that.

The worst is that Bettman is publicly sweeping any criticisms the digital ads get under the rug. The only people on the planet who love digital ads are the advertisers who don't watch hockey.

Since their inception, Bettman hasn't made a single argument on how digital ads improve viewing experience. Why? Because it doesn't. It does the opposite.

Yikes. 🤮

It will be interesting to see if this changes for the reds, as they don't have an ad on those.

Story B: Red Wings go undefeated and score 100 goals in every game. They also beat a team comprised of Godzilla, the ghost of Abraham Lincoln, 2 Power Rangers and Betty White. Oh, and they played in the middle of Iraq on a military base. In the sand. With no ice. Santa gave them special sand-skates that allowed them to play in shorts and t-shirts in 115 degree weather. Jesus, Zeus and Buddha watched from the sidelines and ate cotton candy.

So it looks like the NHL has decided that all Stanley Cup Finals patches have been moved to the left chest, even for teams/jerseys that don't feature an ad 🤦‍♂️

Not at all.

Jerseys ads are small.

Very few court ads.

And NO digital moving board ads.

No  playing surface ads here. Clean court.

Look at this garbage

The moving Caterpillar trucks!

The moving energy drink bottles.

the moving.... batteries?

Not true for the finals.

the idiots have two YouTube TV ads on the court, both with an annoying red blob! 😒

And "The Finals" court decal is not a decal anymore.... that is also superimposed on the court! Two of them right next to each other!  🙄

If you are unhappy with the jersey ads, you could always turn the TV off and not watch any of the Finals at all. Maybe if enough fans turned hockey off, perhaps the NHL would reconsider the ads. Wouldn’t that be nice. I would love to see the ads leave the jerseys and helmets and never come back.

Lol “Hello, Commissioner? It looks like ratings are down 9 viewers and amazingly we think they’re all from a sports logos message board….should we change our strategy?? …maybe we can set up a 2-3 hour in-person meeting on Monday with them to discuss…….sorry, do they have what, Sir? … Oh yes, they do have a Change.org petition…yes…um it has 43 signatures right now…right…no, not thousand, just 43 total…correct…Um I found two or three tweets about it with a few RTs…ok talk soon”

The best strategy would probably be to set up a table outside a grocery store or in an airport and tell people not to watch hockey because of the jersey ads. I’m sure the results would be overwhelmingly positive    /sarcasm

Just popping in to say the Golden Knights really messed up a great original look.

That mustard gold looks awful with that shade of gray equipment. Bring back the original home jersey and equipment. Sprinkle in the gold helmets and/or gold jerseys as a quirky alternate look. Or, if they want to keep the gold jersey as the primary, switch the equipment to black.

Not a fan of ads on uniforms and yes I would prefer they move the ad to make room for the Stanley Cup patch but in fairness it only looks like a disaster on the captain and alternate captain uniforms. Not sure why each team choose to show those jerseys in their posts.

For the majority of players who aren’t captains, the patch will look fine in it’s current location.

just sayin

Good thing you put "/sarcasm" in there,  the rest of us on this board aren't as smart as you and would never have been able to figure that out.

For a few people that’s true. Just hope you’re not one of them.

There’s literally nothing dumber than “What if we just had a bunch of people not watch hockey so we get what we want”. It’s pure delusion/alternate reality stuff.  .

The ads are here to stay. I don’t like it. But nobody outside of some niche group - insert “there are dozens of us!!! Dozens!!!” meme - is going to boycott playoff hockey because of the ads. The constant circling back to “duhhhh ads are bad, I hate ads, we should boycott seriously but not really, and also, I hate ads” that occurs every six weeks or so is so tired. If you all want to beat dead horses so bad, set up a “Dead (Or Partially Alive) Horses We Love To Beat” thread. Constant groaning about ads - when this board clearly has no influence as to what leagues are doing - just sucks the fun and utility out of these yearly changes threads.

This is just good advice in general when it comes to the NHL.

I always wondered if the moving digital board ads were enough of a turn off for fans to legitimately unsuscribe from all NHL streaming services. There have been thousands of complaints about the digital ads that the league have publicly ignored.

More than a few dozens, that's for sure.

But the part that I'm in agreement with you is that corporations don't listen to the complaining on social media. That's why I wondered if the complaints increase enough, when will they begin to speak with their wallet? The league is still selling, despite them completely disregarding their own customers because they're just going to pay for it anyway.

The tiny jersey ads nowhere as bad as the digital ads that distract us from the puck.

There's literally nothing dumber than "You can't talk about uniform aesthetics on a board created for it!!" If you don't like ad talk there's plenty of other sites where you can defend corporate greed with likeminded people

There's also plenty of sites where you can mindlessly repeat the same "ads bad" points ad nauseum if you don't like people who don't exactly care about a small jersey patch in the wider economic picture, so that can go both ways. Having different opinions coexisting in a forum is good, that's how you avoid it turning into a massive echo chamber.

Besides, economics absolutely play just as much a role in sports branding as aesthetics do; no team rebrands purely out of the goodness of their heart, they all do it because they've determined it makes them more dough to do so.
