Some years it was more subtle than others, but it was definitely different. The Niners used to mix in actual (I think) 24k gold flake in with the paint, while the Saints process was a little different. It was somewhat similar to what Notre Dame used to do. They could have gone with non-metallic royal blue helmets in the early 90s like Duke and Kansas did.Ā (Blue Devils had royal blue shells in the late 70s according to Helmet Project).Ā They chose not to.Ā Ā Kansas State had a custom light gray color in the 80s, so custom colors were available...
