Didn't Mauer wear a catchers helmet that didn't match?

If you watch the initial reveal video linked previously, you’ll see that yes, Mauer’s helmet was actually part of the inspiration for this new Twins helmet.

The Diamondbacks never had a panel/regular mismatch, but they did have hats that didn't match the batting helmet in the purple/teal set.  I feel like there's a couple other teams that had similar mismatches.

IIRC their first season only, the purple helmets had the D snake on it while the cap had the A.  Can't recall what the road mismatch was, other than it feels like there was one.  From 99 until they changed colors, it was a more minor mismatch on the road: both had the D snake, but the helmet version had a thick white outline that was never used on that logo outside of that one application.

edit: The 80s White Sox had the white panel hats with the navy blue/redbrimmed helmets. The Rockies for a stretch in the 2010s had black hats and metallic purple helmets. The 70s Pirates had yellow helmets with black hats. The Nats have held onto the red batting helmets while the home hats have shifted to the white paneled dome version.

Mets did the same, but swap out the purple for blue. This was when the Mets were more black heavy in their color scheme.

Rangers also had a batting helmet that faded from blue to red, but I’m not sure that one ever actually saw the field. I wanna say it was scrapped before they ever actually used it in a game.

Traditionalists won't be happy with this, and I can understand why. I can also see how this move is very much money-motivated. Grays are usually the forgotten child in a uniform rotation. However, I see this as a good move. Letting teams wear a color on the road, rather than grays, is more practical, and I think more stylish. I hope more teams lean into this.

I’m wondering if mlb for merchandise purposes doesn’t actually mind teams like the rays or mariners dropping gray because I’d have to think the gray jersey is the least purchased. I’d think the general fan would grab the home uniform to wear to the park or the colored uniform. Also using the rays and mariners example, this will allow for 3 hats to be purchased (standard cap, Sunday throwbacks, new city connect).

Yikes. The M’s have such a mismatched set. The home whites have one font treatment, the road blues another, and the teal yet another. And then the alt fauxback has a different color scheme. Not good.

The teal and white have the same fonts

Sorry, I'm on an iPad

I guess this means the old wordmark will still be above the scoreboard? If they were going to the trouble to renovate the scoreboard, I don't understand why they wouldn't have just slapped the new wordmark on there, too.

Interesting. I definitely would have dropped the cream fauxback first, but this isn't the worst move. I'd rather have seen other teams drop their gray jerseys before the Mariners, since silver is actually a team color for them, but I can see why they did it. Hopefully teal gets more games as a road alternate now.

A lot of people online seem to be criticizing the 4-jersey + City Connect limit, but I applaud the move in general. No team really needs any more than that.

@CC97 also mentioned on Twitter that the Rangers & Diamondbacks will have to drop jerseys from their rotation, since they each have more than 4. For Arizona, I imagine it'll be the turquoise (or maybe, on the contrary, they'll go all-in on it). I'm curious which jersey the Rangers will drop, though. My guess is it'll be the red.

I get the thought behind limiting number of jerseys. But teams dropping gray seems so weird to me.

If basketball can have 5 or 6 looks, baseball could definitely use the same.  I mean it's 162 games.  Not like NFL where there is only 17 games.

The World Basketball Championship, the Davis Cup, Ryder Cup, Iraq: Every day there's further proof that we, as a nation, are not very good at international competition.

1. This is nitpicking (but that's kinda our thing) but that cap doesn't match the helmet because the cap has a white stroke around the T and the C, while the helmet logo is just color on color.  I think I prefer the helmet version, but either one would be nice.

2. This is pretty damned cool!  If they could somehow make them actually shake hands, that would be the proverbial chef's kiss.

And the name kerning on the navy alts is a certified nightmare.

Considering just how bad the Pilots were, and the Mariners were while navy and yellow were their colours, I would have gotten shot of the cream, no question.
