The players never liked the sleeves, for the most part

Old players yes, but most of current gen players have no experience with sleeves jerseys yet plenty of them wearing sleeves undershirt which is kinda interesting and nike should start to make those undershirt in accessories colors.

I remember them doing this once upon a time and it gave us this:

IIRC, those were for St. Patrick's Day, not Christmas.

I do recall the Knicks wearing their St. Patrick's Day green alternates on Christmas  a couple times, though. At least one of those was against the Bulls, so maybe that's what you were misremembering.

Maybe just let them play in their normal uniforms.  We don't need Christmas uniforms to remind me that I'm (not) watching them on Christmas.  I know that I'm (not) watching them on Christmas because *checks the calendar* it's freakin' Christmas.

The NBA is ultimately going to lose the Christmas space to the NFL, so I’m not sure if they should throw out all of the stops, or just forget about it altogether.

Only when Christmas is a Saturday, Sunday, or Monday.  NFL isn't going to have a triple header on a Wednesday.

I think they came out and said they wouldn't do Tues or Wednesday. But most years in the near future would be on other days when it would be in play.

I don't think the NBA will drop Christmas games, though, even if playing second fiddle in the ratings.

Adjacent opinion: I wish the Bucks still used Christmas colors.

I don't think the players' issue was with sleeves in general, but more specifically with the sleeves as Adidas made them. Those shirts were form-fitting and I think the complaint was that they were too restrictive. It's easy to see why just by looking at them.

I think marquee dates are the time to keep it traditional and showcase your best and most solid look, which I was pleasantly surprised they went back to this year (except for Miami and Philly being backwards). The Celtics wearing all the red accessories with a green jersey was a clever nod to the holiday while still looking like their normal selves, and not like the Seattle Sonics or the silly Christmas card script or whatever. It's not the time to see the Miami Viceheat or whatever mystery color Golden State's doing this year and so on. Much like how the NFL doesn't throw out Thanksgiving-theme alternates; it's just the usual look or, maybe, an appropriate throwback. The whole spectacle of the NHL Winter Classic makes that one a little different, but the core idea is the same and the way the early Stadium Series cookie-cutter uniforms fell flat kinda proves the rule.

They absolutely will as long as they can milk money from it. The Steelers/Ravens Wednesday game a few years ago got 10 million viewers. The Cowboys/Giants Wednesday game in 2012 got 22 million. It's only a matter of time.

Kinda wild we're getting to the point where teams using their traditional jerseys in the same game feels like a special occasion.

I don't mind a one-off jersey, save that it's not ridiculous (or sleeved). But, with that said, I did like the Green/Red matchups teams have done in the past ...

Your examples were because they had no choice due to COVID. It won't happen because it makes no sense from a scheduling standpoint. All it would do is piss off the NFLPA and piss off the fans.

This. The way teams should be looking and the scheme they should be following most of the games is starting to be treated here in the way a special occasion would.

The fact that I'd take these back right now just shows how much the Knicks have mailed it in design-wise in the Nike era

Nothing that has come after those unis (the regular colorways) has been better or close. That was a really solid template and look.

Clippers & Grizzlies both wearing different shades of blue.

I love color vs color, but this isn’t it. And I’m sooooo over every game featuring City jerseys.

Of all the color on color matchups which I'm not a fan of at all, this is not really offensive and actually works. There's enough contrast, and the Clippers dark blue comes across more as black for being dark enough.

The problem with red/green matchups is that they're the most likely to be exceptionally difficult for colorblind viewers, which is why color v color matchups have generally shied away from those two colors in recent years.
