2008 World Series

This one ain't over yet. It wouldn't surprise me if the Rays came back from 3-1 to do it. After all, considering the quality of the umpires, we need to think back to 1985 and the Royals. It's also happened in the 1968 and 1958 World Series.

By now the Rays are probably wishing they could have saved up some of those 10+ runs they hung on Boston during the ALCS. For the first time they're really starting to look like they're running on fumes.

Too bad I was busy watching NFL highlights. I would've marked out so hard for that.

That makes no damn sense. What in the hell is Jellyroll Joe Blanton doing smashing dingers into outer space? That's probably the most awesome thing I've seen this month that's sports related. I am so serious.

For a lot of their young guys, they've never played 162 games, much less an extra 15 games during the playoffs. A couple of great pitching performances aside, the Rays could have easily lost their past seven games.

Or maybe the Rays prefer playing with their backs against the wall...who knows. They're playing with house money at this point.

So I arrive at Lincoln Financial Field at 8:30 AM to get ready to work as an usher at the Eagles Falcons game. While there, I'm discussing with my coworkers how we can either use our "credentials" to get some "professional courtesy" to get into the Phillies game, or somehow sneak in. Around 4:00 PM, I proclaim that I am going to this game, and there are two things the Phillies can do about it: fight me and lose, or accept it and let it happen.

So I get changed into my Phillies gear, but keep my Eagles badge on. I can only recruit one guy to attempt this with me - everyone else didn't think it'd work. We go up to Citizens Bank Park, and ask around until we find where the employee entrance is. We walk up (I'm holding a gym bag full of my Eagles clothes, my buddy is just holding clothes in his hand) and just go in as if we do it every day. The first door we see is for the concierge entrance. Right before we open it up, we here the security yelling towards us - turns out two douche bags dressed like total punks tried to sneak in too - but didn't even look remotely like they belonged - so security detained them. We just flashed our Eagles badges (which are worth nothing at CBP) and proceed in. After getting totally lost in the corridors behind the suite entrance, we eventually find our way into the actual seating area.

It's still 30 minutes before the gates open, so we still look pretty suspect being there. Then, we come across the "Phanatic Phun Zone" - a childrens play pen area - and find a ramp behind it where it is difficult to see past. We then hid there until the gates open, and that's when we knew that we made it - and BBTV was in attendance for game 4 of the World Series!

I'll have more to share later (I'm pretty exhausted now!) but we ended up talking ourselved down to the field, where we met Jamie Moyer and Cole Hamels, and we found unused seats right down the first base line. Long story short - between the Eagles game and the Phillies game, this was one of the best days of my life!!!

We saw a small group of Tampa fans come in and immediately start screaming for security. They demanded escorts to their seats, and asked that security stand by their section at all times, because their local media and travel agents warned them about the brutal treatment that out of towners face in Philadelphia, and told them that without security, they'd be physically assaulted and likely injured. Let the record show that had they not screamed and acted like complete idiots, nobody would have even payed them any attention at all - let alone "assault" them. I don't know what they're saying down there, but I think maybe there is some lead in those stupid cowbells.

Also, the couple sitting in front of us bought their tickets for $950 each. I didn't have the heart to tell them I was there for free.

Heh....one of my things on my "fan checklist" is to go to a game in Philadelphia where my team is the visiting team, and make it known I'm a fan of the opposing team, and just see what kind of verbal abuse I'd get from the locals. Especially if it's a game that's got a lot of meaning, whether it be a playoff game or late-season game....

We already knew the guy could throw 100 MPH heat, but Nick never told us he could swing a big stick as well.

Maybe his Pete Rose-esque ban will someday be lifted so he can come back and show us his championship ring.

You're a regular Skipper McNally. Congratulations. That is one of the coolest things I've heard in a long time.

Well the point of my post was that the fans were in no danger at all last night. The fans (at least from everything I saw) were so excited about the Phillies that the few Tampa fans I saw were largely ignored. Maybe it'd be different if it was a more established team, but I think the fact that the tickets were so expensive and largely limited to season-ticket holders made for a crowd comprised of genuine "fans", not low-class ruffians.

Sweet Jebus

Just heard from someone at work this morning who bought a SRO ticket for $600 last night. I guess he just really wanted to be there.

tonight is looking pricey too...

Now that I re-read my post, it does sound a little misleading.

"Let the record show that had they not screamed and acted like complete idiots, nobody would have even payed them any attention at all - let alone "assault" them."

The screaming and acting like idiots wasn't them "cheering", it was the way they yelled for help the second they got into the park. Also, I was trying to say that had it not been for that, nobody would have even noticed them. They were in no danger of being "assaulted". I think my post implies that they got attacked, which is not the case.

That is an awesome story, man. Will you be doing the same for Game Five?

Dunno. I don't know what would happen if I got caught - if I just get kicked out or denied entrance, that's fine. If I get arrested and miss the game... well that's not fine. Also, I'm not sure if I just got very lucky, or if security is that lacks. I'm sure the fact that there was an Eagles game letting out right before the Phillies game added to the chaos and probably helped my effort. Also, carrying a bag filled with legit work clothes that was tagged with what appeared to be legit security tape helped too. If I bring the bag and get denied again tonight, I'd have to carry it around with me wherever I go - and I guarantee that it isn't (and its contents aren't) making it home with me.

I know what you're getting at. It doesn't change my stance on wanting to go to Philadelphia as a visiting fan. I'd welcome the verbal assaults and teasings because I'm a man.

The only road games I've gone to were UGA at Georgia Tech, and the crowds were more pro-UGA than pro-Tech each time.....
