Which is why even still, nobody considers the Yankees a SERIOUS threat to win anything this year. Previous history has shown that to be true. Sure they upgraded, and sure they basically have Murderer's Row...but you've got to have the intangibles as well, and these big spending Yankees teams have lacked that since their last WS run.

People are more annoyed with their spending than they are with their potential to win.

HOW!!!!!!!!!!

I can't belive that they signed him. How do they still have money left.

Well charging $2,500 for a seat per game helps. Not to mentioning owning the most lucrative regional sports channel in the country.

Yeah you're right. It's funny Yankee fans plan out months in advance to go to a game. Rays fans can go down and get 15 dollar upper deck tickets. :D

Well the Yankees did win 4 championships in the 90's and the Lakers won 3 in a row as well. It's about who and what you are signing. The Texas Rangers spent but they spent on basically nothing but hitters. The NY Rangers spent all their money on washed up concussed players (Lindros) or 3rd line centers who are only effective when used in proper situations (Holik). The Yankees in this case have spent their money wisely signing 2 top pitchers (not to mention they have Wang coming back next year) and a top hitter who can play defense (emphasis on the defense part). Look they haven't always spent the money wisely, see the previous first basemen Giambi who can't field.

8 Year deal for Tex in NY

Story from ESPN here

They now have the top 4 paid players in the MLB (Jeter, A-ROD, CC, and now Mark Teixeira

Oh sweet poetic justice. :P

I don't know all that much about baseball, but the fact the Yankess were the ones who end up signing Tex instead of Boston brings a smile to my face, not cause I like one team and not the other, but because a Boston site jumped the gun.

Hi, how are you?

I've never even heard of them to be honest. Looks like a total crap site, but then again, everyone was apparently saying the Red Sox would make an announcement for Tex today. Love it or hate it the Yanks deserve some credit for keeping this so under wraps, especially since they're, well... the Yankees.

In all honesty, I hope the Yankees do not get Manny. He's been my least favorite player in the league for quite a while now. Any progress the team has made with its big free agent signings will go to waste if he comes to the Bronx. Yankee fans welcomed Damon because he's a class act, Manny on the other hand is a dirtbag.

They supposedly have a 3 year offer on the table and I really, really hope they do sign him....Don't get me wrong I'm a diehard RedSox/Mets fan, but I just want them to be the best team ever NEVER to win a World Series Ring and the 1st MLB franchise to shutdown due to bankrupcy.

NL franchises did fold in the Nineteenth Century, just a FYI.

Yea, I'm still not convinced the Yankees pitching will be an upgrade. Don't get me wrong, Sabathia and Burnett are great pitchers...if they are healthy. I'm not 100% convinced they'll last the full season. Sabathia may see the effects of pitching every 3rd day in Milwaukee last year (although he is bigger so he may be able to take it better than other pitchers). Burnett has rarely stayed healthy for an entire season. He was on the O's radar and I was really against signing him, because I don't think he'll stay healthy.

Very true, but it seems like the Detroit Red Wings do the same thing by loading up on top-notch free agents year in and year out, and I'd say it has worked out for them, so you can't really say this method never works. Same goes for the Red Sox, adding numerous players like Schilling and Dice-K in years in which they have won their recent titles.

However, that said, I hope this year's revamped version of the Bronx Bombers fall flat on their faces, again, in typical Yankee fashion. ^_^

Uh, I think most baseball people would consider the Yankees a SERIOUS threat to win a lot this year. They won 89 games last year with below the expected level of production from the following positions:

C

1B

2B

SS

3B

CF

DH

SP

I think Posada is done so he's not going to bounce back, but Cano, Jeter and especially A-Rod will have better years and Teixeira will be a huge upgrade at first. And instead of relying on Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy, they'll be getting innings from Sabathia and Burnett, plus a healthy Chien Ming Wang.

So, yeah, I'd say they are a serious threat.

BTW, intangibles in baseball are meaningless. It's an individual sport wrapped in a team game. Whether or not Mark Teixeira is a hired gun won't change how he does against David Price. The "intangibles" the '90s Yankees had which the recent teams haven't had is pitching, and that's pretty tangible.

They missed the playoffs for the first time since before the strike. and, as you say, won 89 games. Thanks in part to the current postseason format, you cannot buy championships, but you can buy perpetual contention. They yanks have been a contender every year since the strike.
