Because Tony LaRussa logic is rarely conventional logic.

Well there's unconventional and then there's stupidity. That move would be in the ladder category.

If your down by more then five runs and you have the bases loaded with the relief pitcher coming to the plate, you pinch hit for him. That wouldn't even be a thought for any manager at any level.

If its two outs and nobody is on base then okay, I can see letting the relief pitcher hit. But not when you got guys in scoring position and not when its still early enough in the game to where you can come back. Your team is leading the NL in OPS. I'd like to think that if anyone is capable of scoring eight runs in 6 innings its the Cardinals.

I like Tony LaRussa but he made one of the most bonehead decisions I've ever seen as a manager in tonight's game.

Cardinals are down 8-0 in the bottom of the fourth. But they had the bases loaded and two outs with relief pitcher Mitchell Boggs coming to the plate. Common sense says this is probably the best chance you'll have at getting back into the game, so you pinch hit for Boggs. Instead LaRussa kept Boggs in the game pretty much throwing in the towel. Boggs struck out on three pitches and as I'm writing this just gave up a three run home run the following inning.

Why LaRussa kept Boggs in the game, I have no clue.

Easy. Watch this. By leaving the helpless, hapless reliever in to bat for himself, La Russa was really demonstrating how classy he and the Cardinals are, conceding the game in the late innings and not inconveniencing anyone with the extra innings that would surely be necessary to determine a winner after the heroic Cardinal comeback he so graciously withheld. But wait! Is this really the way Tony wanted it to end? Hell no. That's just what he wanted you to think. You see, the actual objective of letting the reliever bat for himself was to test the opposition and see if they were really un-classy enough to strike this poor schmuck out on three pitches, because a team with the ultimate sportsmanship innovated and perfected by the Saint Louis Cardinals would have realized that something was severely amiss in the Cardinal clubhouse for an obviously distracted and distressed Tony La Russa to send a reliever to the plate, and gone easy on this barely-a-#9 hitter, allowing the Cardinals to complete their rally. Test: FAILED. Dodgers: SCREWED. Because now that Los Angeles has revealed itself as the unclassy monsters that they are, they will now lose tomorrow with 100% certainty after La Russa orders every Dodger to be hit by a pitch for Disrespecting The Game as they did, changing pitchers for every hitter to get the best righty-lefty HBP advantage, and after the Dodgers are covered head to toe in welts, they won't even be able to swing a bat. St. Louis beats Los Angeles 6-0 today.

♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫

Giants claim Heath Bell off of waivers

I'm not too sure what exactly the Padres are thinking, but if the Giants can swing a deal for him it would help their bullpen.

I wonder where those Indian fans went.... Hm? They sure scattered quickly after seeing Seattle take 2 out of 3 games (which will soon be 3 out of 4 games) from Cleveland and falling out of the AL Central race faster then you can say 'Cleveland Sucks!'

Meh I expected it. And before they go into "OMG UBALDO DEAL WAS HORRIBLE" mode, both him and this current assembly of Indians have 2 more years to compete. But yeah, I think they're finally done.

Oh well, it's a hell of a lot more than what I would've expected from watching the first 3 innings on GameTracker in London back in April...

I'm still here! <_<

Not you, you goof... You're cool. :)

The Padres put him out on waivers as a fishing expedition to see what interest there was for him... There would have been interest from the Diamondbacks and/or Phillies. However as the Giants had an earlier waiver position they've chosen to :censored: block those teams, and the Padres, by putting in a claim. They have no real interest in him and there is little they could offer in trade that Hoyer would be able to accept without a fan revolt in SD. So the Pads will pull him back off waivers according to reporters in both SF and SD. Bell will be finishing out the year on the Padres.

Yeah the waivers list is supposed to be secret. Teams have been known to put half of their roster on waivers just to see what if anything they can get for players. Its a safe low pressure way to gauge interst from other teams and talk about trades.

I don't think Bell is going anywhere. He's set to become a free agent in the offseason and the Padres should be able to get some compensation for him if they let him walk so a straight buyout wouldn't make much sense. There's also no way any contending team is going to allow anyone of value to clear waivers from the Giants.

Actually that's not much of a concern since of all the contending teams the Giants have the worst record. They're lowest on the waiver totem pole so other teams couldn't block the move by them if they wanted to. However it doesn't seem likely the move will happen.

Well, well, well...

One week ago today, the Angels were 7 games behind Texas, and the season was over. The next day, they were staring 8 games down right in the face until Mark Trumbo hit a walk off homer to set the Angels back right. They've now won 6 in a row and are now only 2.5 games out with a 3-game series in Texas starting Friday. Now depending on tomorrow's Red Sox/Rangers game it could either be 2 or 3 games, but it doesn't really matter. Either way, the Angels would still have to sweep to get to 1st (either ahead or a tie).

Scioscia floated out the idea of bringing out Santana and Weaver on short rest for this series to get the Halos Top 3 (Haren, Santana, Weaver), and based on how he handled Weaver tonight, it looks like he might just be doing that. And that has me pumped up about it. The Rangers have knocked the Angels around the last couple times, and this shows how bad they really want to finally bring it to them. The Angels are playing some of their best ball of the season, and now they need to man up and take it to Texas.

Angels are doing exactly what I said they needed to do. Their stretch schedule is easier than Texas' schedule. Catch up when Texas is playing division contenders and the Angels are playing the other teams in between the final two Texas/Angels series (This weekend and the season's final series). They've done that part, now it's time to just man up. Go Halos.

Wow, this storm is no joke. First they evacuate the shores, and now the Phils have preemptively moved Sunday's game to Saturday afternoon and made it a day-night doubleheader (though it isn't likely that the night game will get played.) They're trotting out Halladay and Lee for the twin-bill (is a non-twi night DH still considered a twin bill?) Can't think of a better pair that's pitched a DH, at least not for the Phils.

You mean you did not know this storm was the real deal, the news has the graphics department working overtime for the swoooshes and swishes and the drums, trumpets and violins with the words PANIC 2011.
