2012 MLB Season

Had two classes cancelled for Opening Day today in Cincinnati, and skipped another so I could be home.

Don't know if it can top this: (which I watched between classes on mlb.com's Gameday thing)

Ramon Hernandez's walk off last year is my favorite Opening Day to date. Lotta guys in that video that I wish were still Reds.

It's right above 2005 for me (same score, only Joe Randa hit the HR)

Hell of a duel on the north side today. Strasburg with one run over seven, Dempster with no runs and two hits over 7 2/3. I love the days when Wrigley plays as a pitcher's park, just as a chance of pace.

What I don't like is the Not Quite Green Monster in right. The bleachers are supposed to be for the people.

Sorry if this was mentioned, but why did the Marlins and Cardinals have a one-game "series" to open Marlins Park? Has that ever been done before? Seems really silly.

Cubs pulled Dempster, Wood lets in the tying run and the Nats take the lead in the 9th. Oh well, it was worth skipping class for even if this team isn't good.

Man, Justin Masterson must be PISSED. He tossed a gem and his closer just blew it completely.

That's what happens when you barely pitch your bullpen in the spring. Wood came in and blew it like a champ, like only the friggin' Cubs can.

That ship sailed a decade ago. This year at Wrigley, a non-Corporate-Patio Summer weekend bleacher seat costs $94 before service fees, $113 after Ticketmaster goes two knuckles deep.

What kind of an idiot brings in the guy who had five innings of spring training work while your starter is rolling along? Stupid baserunning, too, which Len Kasper assures me is Sveum's doing as a believer in "aggressive baserunning." What kind of Red Sox foot soldier is this guy, then, anyway? I think the Red Sox stole one base in all the time that Theo Epstein ran the team, and that stolen base went on to beat the Yankees. I am not encouraged by what I see.

At least it felt right and comfortable to wring my hands about Kerry Wood and Ryan Dempster so there's some sense of continuity with prior summers (if you will) of discontent. I feel like I'm watching split-squad games, except they're not.

1. To give the new park "a day to itself" with a national broadcast is my guess.

2. Yes. If memory serves, the Nationals played a one game "series" to open their new park.

3. It is really silly. I can't imagine it would be that difficult to schedule a "normal" series to coincide with the opening of a new park. Start a day early, get your "day to yourself", take a day off, and play the next two games. Seems simple enough.

EDIT: Just saw that The Brigadier General already answered #2.
