DG_YouKnowWhatThatMeans
I didn't watch the Super Bowl this year because I find the Pats objectionable. It won't be hard for me to boycott the Qatar Slave Cup either. The FIFA has any moral fiber (lol), they'll make the right decision. 1 Quote 1 hour ago, ShutUpLutz! said: and the drunken doodoobags jumping off the tops of SUV's/vans/RV's onto tables because, oh yeah, they are drunken drug abusing doodoobags

If you consider that "slave labor" then you are cool with most of those Nike gear you are wearing made in sweatshops in China huh? Most corporations in USA are using prisoners for 10 cents and hour to manufacture parts. Its a cruel world we live in, so if your gonna single out Qatar and their methods of building their World Cup stadium then be critical of all the messed up labor that permeates society. Listen, its not the best circumstance and I wish it wasnt awarded, but at this point lets move ahead and enjoy the World Cup. Simple

But that doesn't mean you have to turn your brain off and recognize increasingly terrible and increasingly shocking uses of slave labor. If we don't point out the excesses of Qatar, it just makes a North Korea World Cup that much more likely. Not sure if you've noticed the recent global rise of authoritarianism, but tacit acceptance of mingling sports and fascism ends up bad for everyone. Or at least it did in 1936. 9 Quote 1 hour ago, ShutUpLutz! said: and the drunken doodoobags jumping off the tops of SUV's/vans/RV's onto tables because, oh yeah, they are drunken drug abusing doodoobags

It's really really hard to separate this particular World Cup from the horrors that created it. I'm not saying CCSLC has a moral imperative to call out modern slavery in all its forms, but I do think we as individuals should when it's so clearly in our faces. Fwiw, I'm following the lead of a mod. If we can't discuss the Qatar world cup without discussing forced labor, I think that says more about FIFA and Qatar than it does about us. EDIT: And yes, I can easily boycott a World Cup. Watch me...not watch it. 5 Quote 1 hour ago, ShutUpLutz! said: and the drunken doodoobags jumping off the tops of SUV's/vans/RV's onto tables because, oh yeah, they are drunken drug abusing doodoobags
IceCap
@DG_Now @andregunts tagging you so you're aware of where everything was moved to. Also gonna repost this... Yeah. Here's the thing. The literal enslavement of migrant workers is central to the narrative of this World Cup. You can't really separate it from the event itself. I will admit that this wing of the discussion is probably best served for the Sports in General thread while the Sports Logos one is left to the design end of things. Which is why I'm moving this wing of the discussion over there. That being said, abhorrent treatment of workers and bribery are so integral to this World Cup's narrative that I'm not censoring the "should have been a bloody bag of money" stuff from the logo thread. If that annoys you? Grow a thicker skin. 5 Quote PotD 26/2/12 1/7/15 2020 BASS Spin the Wheel, Make the Deal Regular Season Champion 2021 BASS NFL Pick'em Regular Season Champion

Deal with it ...implied opposition to this event was based on anti-Arabic sentiments or the hostility towards the idea of a winter World Cup. And I'm saying no. The enslavement of migrants to construct the infrastructure to make this WC viable is the reason people have issues with it. And it's disingenuous to paint opposition to it as anything else. 1 hour ago, andregunts said: Ok, so are you going to boycott the World Cup? Yeah, I'm going to have to disagree with you a little bit on this one. People making 10 cents an hour to stitch shoes together is a TERRIBLE abuse of human rights, and absolutely should be fought. But by the time this particular World Cup rolls around, there could be somewhere in the neighborhood of 2,500-5,000 human deaths associated with construction. That's absolutely mortifying. 5 Quote On 11/19/2012 at 7:23 PM, oldschoolvikings said: She’s still half convinced “Chris Creamer” is a porn site.) Seadragon76
I know an easier way for people to not watch the World Cup in 3 years... at least out here: The US Men's team missing out yet again. Another good reason for people to not watch is the time of the games... Doing some basic rudimentary math here, kickoff times would probably be early morning to afternoon in Doha, which in turn makes games start in the morning for all the people on the east coast and really early for me on the west coast. Of course, it's still really, really early in the process to begin on this, but just remember that.
