Congrats to New Mexico State. First bowl game since 1960.

This is a great story, in my honest opinion. They're heading to the Arizona Bowl (which is the only bowl the school can really afford to go to). This and the rebirth of UAB football are great stories to watch in some of these lower tier games.

As for the New Year's Six..

Cotton: USC vs. Ohio State

Fiesta: Washington vs. Penn State

Orange: Miami vs. Wisconsin

Peach: UCF vs. Auburn

How Washington held on for a New Years Six Bowl... astounding.

Also, you’ve gotta think the Cotton Bowl and Rose Bowl are lobbying to swap designations. Each would probably rather have the other’s matchup (USC vs OSU, OU vs UGA) for a multitude of reasons. But, playoff.

But with over 100 teams playing 12 games, schedule integrity is not possible.  Randomness happens in scheduling and Georgia was able to add a quality win.  There can’t be an assumption that Bama would have won that game.

Oh, absolutely — I wasn’t arguing that Alabama should be viewed differently, but I think it’s funny how much of all of this is somewhat out of their control.

My suggestion to improve college football is to dump conference championship games, eliminate divisions, and let everyone schedule 13 games. You get rid of the “same conference but play once every six years” crap, and let teams be judged based on what they’ve really done, not the poorly setup conference championship game system we have now.

Plus, I think you’d see more big non-conference games — schools could get to the seven home games they want with only one “buy” game. I think some schools would try to shoehorn an eighth home game, but most would take the opportunity to add a big home-and-home or neutral-site game.

The committee sent a message:

Schedule doesn’t matter. Resume doesn’t matter. Top 5-10-15 wins? Doesn’t matter.

Alabama by beating nobody and running up the score: Eye Test.

Schedule Mercer in November? Fine by us

Or, perhaps, losing by 31 to a 7-5 Iowa team and having four wins over remotely good teams, none of which beat anyone worthwhile in non-conference play, doesn’t produce as good of a resume as people think it does?

Ohio State had three top-15/16 wins. The rest of Ohio State’s schedule was… awful. Michigan was a half-decent team, but their next-best win is Army. Indiana, Nebraska, Maryland, Rutgers, UNLV and Illinois are all awful football teams.

Sure, Ohio State played some good teams, but half their schedule was a cakewalk. It’s not a particularly deserving resume when it includes a 31-point loss to a 7-5 team.

Not often you get to see a team get to 6-6 and fans storm the field. Great scene. This is also their last year with a conference affiliation in football for now, so good timing getting this done this season.

Ohio State may have been deserving of a shot, but Alabama has been consistently good all season long before the loss to Auburn.

The entire season, the Crimson Tide was the number 1 team in the nation. Even after losing to Auburn, they fell to 5th... literally the first team out.  Ohio State had a loss to Oklahoma that really, since it was before the playoff rankings were out, didn't hold a lot of weight. The Iowa loss, on the other hand... woof. That was bad.

Alabama didn't play well most of November against LSU they weren't dominant and at MS State, they escaped with a win. Then their pre-Iron Bowl FCS game, only to get rolled at Auburn the next week.

Has anyone seen a team go to the same non-New Years Six bowl 2 years in a row?  Well if not, look at USF this year, theyre going to Birmingham for the second year in a row.

While I'll admit I like the opponent in Texas Tech, I wish they wouldve done a three way swap with USF, Houston, and Navy....

Navy to Hawaii Bowl (large naval presence in Hawaii)

Houston to Birmingham Bowl

USF to Military Bowl

Late in the BCS era, Texas (12 & 13)and GT (11 & 12) went to consecutive Alamo and Sun Bowls respectively.

In its beginning, the B1G didn't have a no repeat policy in place, so Ohio State went to consecutive Outbacks and Michigan went to consecutive Citrus.

Army isn't going to the same bowl, but almost had the distinction of playing the same team twice for two years in a row. North Texas was being considered for the Armed Forces Bowl.

Ohio State also went to back to back Fiesta Bowls, though the second time was as part of the playoffs.

Can't wait to welcome in next season's huddled-up, hand-holding edition of Sun Devil football.

As hilarious as it would have been if Alabama got left out, they deserve to be in.

I imagine that their fans would have tried to start a second civil war if that had happened.

Neither Ohio State nor Alabama was deserving of a shot in the playoff. Both had chances to assemble a good resume and blew them. Neither would be in the discussion if USC won at Washington State or Notre Dame.

The difference between the two, in my eyes, is this: Alabama's resume did not necessary qualify themselves for inclusion. But Ohio State's loss at Iowa (with a loss to a playoff team already there) was disqualifying.

Speaking of North Texas and repeat bowls, I remember when North Texas went to four straight New Orleans Bowls. This was back when the Sun Belt only had the one bowl tie-in and North Texas kept winning the conference, including the embarrassing first year when they won on a tie-breaker over Middle Tennessee to be the Sun Belt's lone bowl representative at 5-6. Good times.
