NFL Changes 2014+

Ugh. Titans in light blue over navy. I wouldn't mind them switching to this full-time.

Chris+Johnson+Indianapolis+Colts+v+Tenne

Replace the helmet logo with an oil derrick, change the shoulder yoke logo, and swap out the navy socks for baby blue ones and that uniform would be damn-near perfect.

Pssst....got your divisions mixed up, but the point you wanted to make is there.

That said, Colgate only dropped to I-AA (FCS) in the post-1981 season midmajor purge of I-A (FBS).

Here's what I was thinking of. From Syracuse's 2014 football uniform unveiling.

"Custom numbers appear tall and narrow, mimicking the height of New York Citys skyline. The numbers also feature a unique 44-degree linear V pattern. This pattern is mirrored on the uniform pant lines and shoulder panels for unified positioning of the Orange as New York's college team."

The whole quote is nonsense because last time I checked Syracuse wasn't part of New York City. As for the bold part? I'm not sure what "unified positioning of the Orange" actually means. It's just nonsense.

Last I checked, Syracuse is part of New York State though

And Nike's press release mentioned New York City, not New York State. So I stand by what I said. A load of nonsense.
I'll back this up. Syracuse is almost 250 miles from NYC. It's almost as absurd as a Houston team trying to take inspiration from Dallas.

tl;dr

I can't specifically place the origination of this phrase on Nike. I remember seeing it in some Syracuse media guides.

Syracuse University had been trying to claim itself as "New York's College Team", and I always took that to be the entire state, not just New York City.

Up until recently, Syracuse was the only FCS school in New York. Then the University of Buffalo moved up into the MAC.

Currently, the state of New York has two FCS teams, Syracuse and Buffalo. But for the longest time, it was only Syracuse.

The rest of the larger institutions are FBS: Albany, Colgate, Columbia, Cornell, Fordham, Marist, Stony Brook, and Wagner. (Bolded schools are in NYC, and Wagner is on Staten Island).

I understand the aspect of the "New York's College Team" as the whole state. My addition was to the fact of the new uniform's number font. "Custom numbers appear tall and narrow, mimicking the height of New York City's skyline" That's a bit ridiculous.

Can the Jaguars just bring back these uniforms already?

3548.gif3549.gif

By the time they wore this combination, the road uniform was already a mess. Solid black from the waist down? Ick.

The truth is, the Jags never looked better than in their first season... every change has been a step down, with the last two being a giant leap off a cliff.

I think the version before the one posted above, where the numbers were teal and I believe no black pants, were their best look and easily could've lasted for a long time.

Which tells you that they're not talking about the state when they claim to be "New York's College Team". They're talking about the city.

Colgate is actually in Hamilton, NY, which isn't much closer to NYC than Syracuse is.

Blarg. Enough Orwellian revisions. I like the Oilers' identity but I'd prefer it stayed alive in Tennessee.

The Houston Texans have a solid identity as it is anyway. Would be a shame to kill that so they can pretend they're the original Oilers.

If the Titans could find a way to add a minimal amount of red on the jerseys (and maybe a thin red stripe on the pants), it'd look pretty great.

Smart is believing half of what you hear. Genius is knowing which half.

Because there are tons of oil derricks in Tennessee...

Well, son, I was hinting that they should still be in Houston playing as the Oilers...maybe they were before your time.

And Houston eventually got a new NFL team. The city should be extremely grateful.

This whole thread is based on OP thinking these uniforms look very similar:

jacks.jpgNew-TB-Buccaneers-Uniforms-2014.jpg

What's a joke is how blind the anti-Nike NFL crowd is

Both feature a stylistically similar angular block font and (what's not visible in these photos) identical triangle inserts on the pants stripes, although reversed. No, the uniforms aren't identical. But as the two most recent NFL redesigns by Nike, they're far too alike to be passed off as "unique" designs for each team.

As people have said, some of the blame has to be put on the teams. Nike is capable of good, clean, modern designs as shown with Minnesota. But when they get ahold of a team that allows more wiggle room, it's more likely to see crap like this on the field.

Yeah the first version of Jacksonville's uniforms weren't great because of the side panel and the number font, which were both ditched in time for the following season.

The black side panels were only used during the preseason of the 95 season I believe.

Really!?

That uniform is far from a classic (ugh, those side piping lines), but the current ones are absolute hideous garbage in almost every way that get too much of a pass because of the fact the helmet is the worst thing ever worn by an NFL team.

You cannot tell me, from an objective standpoint, that the current (for example) number font is better than the one used in that photo.

Yes I can tell you that. No gold on the whole uniform. The side piping was awful and inconsistent from player to player. The font was dull. Teal black and gold is a beautiful color scheme and they decided to eliminate gold and make the uniforms as plain as possible. The old logo was a decent logo but side by side with the new and it shows its age. I'll take the new uniforms every time even if that means the current helmets over that plain excuse of a uniform they had before this current set.
