BBTV 20,151 Posted October 20, 2014 If a new team is being created and the state puts up funds for a stadium or makes some other sizeable contribution then I can understand them wanting the team to use the state name, since it kind of serves as de facto advertising and provides more name recognition to some states that aren't known as tourist destinations or aren't really significant from a national perspectvie (not that any state isn't significant in some way, just that while every school kid across the country learns about Massachusetts, not every school kid is taught anything about say Idaho (or Minnesota for a major-league example) outside of geography class.)I don't necessarily like it, but it makes sense. I don't like names like Colorado Rockies, which are a tangible thing, because it sounds like some team is going up against a huge mountain range, not a group of people or even animals (yes, I know that when broken down like that, most names are silly, but that one in particular stands out to me.)
WSU151 9,801 Posted October 20, 2014 I know some people hate it, but they're named that for a reason.Texas Rangers = Law Enforcement of the same nameFlorida Panthers = big cat native to the area of the same name. Not sure about the Florida Marlins, but they changed it, so that should have ended any complaints about it if any. And "Miami Marlins" does roll off the tongue a lot better.I believe "Baltimore oriole" is the official name of the bird as well.
bosrs1 1,289 Posted October 20, 2014 Aren't the Angels supposed to drop 'of Anaheim' from their name? When? That's still their official nameThey were working it into a new deal with Anaheim. However those talks have stalled out and the Angels are talking with several other cities in the area now. It may still happen but not until they've signed a new deal with Anaheim.
Gothamite 24,109 Posted October 20, 2014 Agreed - the team has the ability to change the name, but might not exercise that option so long as they're trying to get a new stadium deal out of Anaheim.

shaydre1019 1,062 Posted October 21, 2014 The Texas Rangers are a thing. They are the state's equivelant of the FBI. Haven't you seen that documentary called Walker, Texas Ranger? The baseball team using the state name makes sense because they are based in a suburb between two large cities. Plus, this state is so damn big, you might as well grab as much land as possible. I've seen more Rangers gear in San Antonio and Austin than Astros stuff. But, I haven't been out that way since the 'stros redesigned.Never really saw too many people in rangers gear until their World Series runs a few years ago, haven't seen much since. Astros gear has been more popular since the rebrand. I'm so glad we made the switch. I really disliked the inconsistency of the last brand and the pinstripes. Hated them. This new look still has a few things that can be tweaked but it's still light years better IMO.

They looked like about 10 other teams. Now they've got a look to call their own.

Yeah, now they've got a clip art star and Tigers colors The current Astros are the worst dressed team in the league by a country mile IMO. The last set WAS pretty unique in certain elements like the color scheme (which people seem to forget that the Diamondbacks copped, like, seven years later), and that logo they used was probably my favorite in all of sports. Their current set is somehow boring and a total mess at the same time.
franmansr 0 Posted October 21, 2014 For the ribbon that says 10 YEARS, they should have modeled it more after the ribbon at the top of the original logo. It looks so flat and boring as is. I also wouldn't have minded the 9 stars on the bottom half of the roundel either. That way it would have looked like a nice combination of the team's two primary logos. Although I am a Giants fan, I couldnt agree more.Rough edit:didnt do the 9 stars on the bottom, but if you count there is ten in there. also the ten years font isnt exact either
dahatman 1 Posted October 21, 2014 What about the Padres? Wasn't ownership considering making changes for the 2015 season or was that 2 or 3 ownership groups ago? They are in need of a complete overhaul.

They are in need of a complete overhaul. No changes for 2015. They're supposedly looking at different options for 2016 including investigating brown but nothing definitive yet. They're still not convinced the majority of the fan base actually wants brown back.Frankly while I'm not a fan of the brown at all, even I don't see why they don't split the difference in this era of alternate uniforms. Bust out a new or retro brown uniform as an alternate to placate the vocal brown fans (hopefully without the godawful late 70's and early 80's taco bell cap), revamp the blues to have a little more style to them for the primaries (something like the 1998's would be great), and keep the very popular camo for Sunday. It would be a good line up that would give everyone something to like.

BBTV 20,151 Posted October 22, 2014 If the Royals win the WS, maybe they'll do the gold outline thing on their uniforms for the first game like some other teams have done. The gold would look really good, and IMO should be investigated as a permanent addition.

While the Reds aren't the best team in Major League Baseball, they certainly aren't the worst.Other than downplaying the black, I'm trying to think of anything from this current set that isn't a downgrade from their previous look. Even the relatively generic block letters and numbers were better for a team with their historical pretensions than the overly-fussy custom font they're saddled with now.
Bmac 891 Posted October 22, 2014 Did Tampa Bay wear the navy fauxbacks again this season? I know they wore the powder blue fauxbacks but I can't recall if they wore the navy ones again.
