So now Adidas is going to invest even more in basketball, but instead put the majority of it into product development and player endorsements.

"We want to sharpen the edge and be more disruptive," Grancio said. "If I were to describe our products in brief, historically we've been too safe. We want to be much more aggressive in design."

The Portland Business Journal thus far has the only interview with Grancio.

Basketball is way more about the shoe than the tanktop/jersey you wear. From Adidas' standpoint it makes sense for them to go after player endorsements. As a logo/uniform board we may care about the jerseys more, but its always been about the shoes for adidas and nike.

I'd so much rather have Nike take the MLS and Under Armour take the NBA. I've never been displeased with Under Armour in basketball, so I think it would work out well. But I'd still rather have Nike take MLS and NBA if possible.

I'm happy for this for a reason that really has nothing to do with design. While I do kinda like their shoes (even if they are a bit cheaply made in comparison to Nike), Adidas clothes fit like crap most of the time (loose collars, strangely bunched up shoulders, pant legs that are too tight, crotchlines that ride up and give you MANeltoe, WAAAY inconsistent sizing, everything is too short, ect) where Nike and UA almost always put out good fitting product. I'm still not the biggest fan of Nike's cotton T Shirts, but at least now I know if I'm gonna drop $75-$100 on a jersey, it'll at least fit properly.

I nearly cried tears of joy seeing this news. The pajamas Adidas introduced will go down in sports history as one of the worst "innovations" (ill-conceived fads, if you can call them popular enough to be a fad) in major U.S. sports history. If anyone defends Adidas in general (they've had a few hits, mostly with throwbacks/fauxbacks in college football and basketball), then I really can't take you seriously.

I'll be beyond thrilled if Adidas don't renew their MLS contract as well (though that seems less likely). Keep Adidas as far away as possible from U.S. pro sports so that I only have to see them in the occasional international soccer match, so that I'll only have to feel sorry for, say, Argentina's beautiful sky blue and white striped kit being fouled up by the black shoulder tri-stripes for a month.

Going out on top then. I don't think Adidas could top this work of art:

Not terrible looking, but the fact that it was homoginized over the entire league is awful.

Please bring back original warm-up gear, whoever wins this.

Not going to happen. See "Baseball, Major League" and "Football League, National". League-wide contracts mean league-wide merchandise templates.

Hopefully, Nike will get the contract. I'm not anti-UnderArmor, but they seem to fall in to poor trends/fads that Adidas fell in to. Sure, UnderArmor put together some nice uniforms, but a lot of the stuff was terrible (Wounded Warrior Uniforms, Northwestern Gothic Uniforms).

Again, despite everything we say about BFBS and GFGS, I think Nike would be the go to. They have seemed to really nail it with college basketball uniforms... more so than the college football uniforms.

Here's the thing. When Reebok won the contract initially, Nike didn't submit a competitive bid for the exact reasons adidas is getting out now. The market for NBA gear is very hard to turn a profit on. It always has been. Nike only outfitted certain teams at the time, but had marketing rights for every team, and still didn't hit a big profit.

Nike said at the time that it made more sense for them to sign and market players than to bid on the league deal. The NBA put out feelers to them before letting adidas rip up the Reebok deal the first time.

adidas got in because they wanted to expand their basketball business when they took over Reebok. It was never about turning a profit, because they knew that was a tough sale.

The sleeved jerseys were a final push to try and find something NBA that would appeal to the mass market. They haven't, so adidas is picking up its ball of cash and moving on.

IF Nike gets the bid, it will be all about keeping Under Armour out. But I don't see them getting into a bidding war over it.

I think that adidas started moving towards that this year with home and away jackets. Nike usually has 2 to 3 options for warm ups and I'd expect it to stay that way. But i like the idea of each team designing their own. The only reason they change every year now is that folks don't always want to wear jerseys and will wear warm ups instead.

This is amazing news!

I'm on the fence with regards to the 2 way race. Nike is awesome, but their college stuff is terrible IMO. Do they still do that stupid looking tight jersey, really long baggy shorts combo? That looks so hideous. But i am sure the NBA has a rule on short length, just wish it was above the knee rule. I see a lot of potential with Under Armour and they do make some very comfortable apparel. I wouldn't be upset if they got it.

Question. IF Nike gets it, could they choose some teams to be Jordan brand? Bulls, Hornets, Wizards for example? That'd be very cool IMO.

I like the quote from the adidas rep that the company hasn't gotten the return on investment from the NBA contract that they expected, as if it was the league's fault.

Depending on how much they are currently paying, he may be right. I rarely see people wearing any nba gear in Houston and its not like the team is bad here. I'm far more likely to see a person wearing a Texans or Astros item than a Rockets item. I'm sure that may be different in places such as LA or Miami when LeBron was there, but I'd be curious to see where the NBA falls in terms of merch sale when compared to the other leagues.

I'm in San Antonio and it seems everyone here has 12 pieces of Spurs gear. But the majority of it is the NBA knockoffs. The only time I see adidas on anything is if someone bought the military city jerseys at the stadium or on sale at Academy.

This is good news and I see Nike getting the contract over UA.

What's your vision based on?

I see it as the best option possible. As much as I like UA, I honestly don't think they're ready to be on that stahe with the four pro sports in the US. Nike at least has experience with the NBA. Plus I highly doubt Nike will come up with reasons to have pointless alternate/heritage/pride jerseys. The throwbacks really shouldn't be that difficult to replicate with Nike either.

Ok for reasons stated by above by others i see nike putting in a low bid that pencils out for them and getting outbid by UA. All of the reasons that you are giving are qualitative in nature and don't take any of the financials which will be the #1 factor for the nba.

Champion had the best warm ups PERIOD!

I would love for Champion to get back in the game. Back then, there was so much more design variety in the warmup gear and shooting shirts. I remember you could pick up one of those authentic warmup jackets for $40. I wonder if Starter could possibly be a player to come back?

My main gripe with Adidas is the general fan gear, such as t shirts, sweatshirts, and hats. I'd say it's been crap since day 1. Their sizing is wildly inconsistent, and even when you do have the right size, the fit is still often poor. If anyone has any hats, you know they are mostly made of 100% polyester and have a sheen to them which looks terrible.

I think Nike is a much better option than under armour. Their templates and jersey cuts are much better Imo and I think they showed with the NFL that they can keep with tradition for the most part.

If NIke came back I wonder if they would use the same templates as the NCAA? Would we see the sweat boxes with designs in them on the back?

They do it in college basketball all the time. The past few years Nike teams wore "Elite Platinum" uniforms, "Hyper Elite" uniforms with the chest logos, "Hyper Elite Dominance" fauxback uniforms, "Elite Rivalry Series" uniforms with white and dark sets, the turquoise "N7" Native American awareness jerseys, and special NCAA tournament gear (I'm sure I'm forgetting something). This doesn't even include regular throwbacks and alternate jerseys.

Say what you will about adidas, but Nike is just as bad with this sort of crap.

I've got a dribbble, check it out if you like my stuff; alternatively, if you hate my stuff, send it to your enemies to punish their insolence!
