Why are they called the Los Angeles Angels, if they're in Anaheim?

Isn't the Dodgers LA's team?

At least they don't have that ridiculous Los Angeles of Anaheim name anymore.

A stadium deal is sweet, but long-term it's your market size that matters the most, especially in a sport like baseball where so much of the revenue comes from local television.

I always hear people bring up how the Browns moving to Baltimore is a move that shouldn't have happened. From a fan's perspective this is an easy argument to make, but from a financial one, the move to Baltimore long term has made the franchise more valuable.

The lousy move from that time I don't understand is Bud Adams moving the Oilers from Houston to Tennessee. Regardless of what the stadium situation would have been in Houston, its the sixth largest metro area in the country. Where do you think you're going where you're getting a better situation than that?

Since NFL TV revenue is a more equitable split than MLB, he only really loses out on local income from broadcasting preseason games and clothing sales. Additionally, the lame duck year in Houston was preceded by declining attendance. Though that wasn't the case in Cleveland, both stadiums needed repairs or a replacement. The biggest complaint form NFL fans of the Browns move was that Art Modell was so reticent to threaten the city with a move that when it was actually being reported most city employees laughed it off until the moment he stepped off the plane in Baltimore. I think had he been out front and said, "I've saved the Indians for years by letting them play at Cleveland Stadium for almost nothing and I'm not being taken care of" . , the city may have had to wait to open a new stadium in 1999 but the original team would have been going into it instead of an expansion squad.

Exactly.

Close but different town & inaccurate name.

Sure, then we should have the Orchard Park Bills too.

I could make an exception with cases like the Buffalo Bills, if their stadium is located just on the border of Buffalo in a super tiny suburb.

Anaheim's big enough and distinct enough on their own from LA, they should have their own brand of sports teams. But it's just a personnal preference. The name I'd go with is the one that sounds better to me.

Another difference: LA's a lot bigger and has a few dozen more suburbs.  As the map shows there's not a natural dividing line between the LA urban sprawl other than county jurisdiction lines.

By the same logic we should have the Carson Galaxy and, in a few years, the Inglewood Rams and Inglewood Chargers.

Anaheim's not even the largest city in Orange County.  It's acceptable as a location in that it's the most well known city in OC but it's certainly acceptable to have a Los Angeles team there.

Me coming from where I am, I see Anaheim separate from LA for that reason, it's the most known city in large part because of the Mighty Ducks or the Ducks.

But the points you made about the city sizes and the multiple locations, I get where the argument comes from.

It does feel weird to me to see an Anaheim team labeled as Los Angeles. But I understand the whole scheme a bit better now.

Only because you’re used to it. The Los Angeles Rams moved to Anaheim in 1980 and no one cared that they kept the Los Angeles name.

The NHL first began to be interested in Anaheim in the late 80s. The Minnesota North Stars proposed moving in the early 90s, and were planning on using the name “Los Angeles Stars.”

That deal only got nixed because the NHL wanted that sweet, sweet expansion cheque from Disney. And Disney opted to name their team the “Mighty Ducks of Anaheim” to drum up publicity for the locale of one of their major resorts.

Had the Los Angeles Stars relocation gone through, or had Disney just gone with “Los Angeles Mighty Ducks”? We’d likely think nothing of a team in Anaheim using the “Los Angeles” name.

Again, the Rams did it for fourteen years and no one cared.

The Pistons play in Auburn Hills, not Detroit. The Giants play in East Rutherford, New Jersey, not New York. The Angels are "Los Angeles" because that was their original name and they're part of the Greater LA Metro Area.

I'll start by saying I'm in favour of Anaheim being used as the geographical identifier and I think it can be after so many years of being used as one, but it is definitely a Disney creation.

Last season the Ducks put a bunch of old newspaper articles on their website ahead of this year's 25th anniversary from back when the team was announced. A few of the articles talk about what this new team will be called, including one where "Anaheim" is discussed with an Angels spokesperson being asked about it. I crudely cut and pasted it together here.

Another article (which I linked to them above, they're all very interesting) talks to Eisner and then a Disney spokesperson after the team was conditionally approved but before it was official. One of the conditions of the official approval being Disney needing to get a deal done with an arena in Orange County/Southern California with the now-Honda Center being built for reasons unrelated to the Disney expansion team.

(I like how [Disneyland] is added in before Matterhorn. Was the writer worried readers would think you could see it from the actual Matterhorn?)

They moved in with the Red Wings and came back downtown last year. RIP, home of the Pistons and almost the Whalers.

No, he's up. Which is partially why the Angels opted out now and said they'll negotiate next month with the new mayor and council.

Also, low key info, Disney kind of wanted out of that hotel anyway. They weren't that mad about having to cancel the project.

Any word if whether Disney will reopen the Downtown Disney shops that they closed to make way for that shelved hotel?

Would like to see Dave and Buster's or Buffalo Wild Wings take over the old ESPN Zone.

They already are. Earl of Sandwich has reopened. Rainforest Cafe said they’d like to reopen their location. No announced plans for the ESPN Zone or AMC Theaters they cleared out. Both are pretty unique structrues internally, so I’m quite curious what those become.
