The Cardinals will win the division.

They'll have some nobody come out of nowhere and dominate the Braves, carrying them to the NLCS. We'll all be like "oh, not this :censored: again", as they take the first two games against the Dodgers. But then St. Louis will ultimately lose the series in seven games, where we'll all (except for Giants fans) have a big sigh of relief.

Go Cards.

Welp...looks like Theo's gonna hang a "Manager Wanted" sign outside Wrigley.  I figure the only way Maddon hangs onto his job is if he somehow wins the WS with this hit-or-miss bullpen, and without Javy or Rizzo.

This really seems like the year where it's theirs to lose.

Astros seem like the only team that could beat them (again). Yankees pitching a leaky faucet. Twins, I just don't trust not to disappoint again.

With the full disclosure that I don't think the Yankees would beat the Astros if they faced them...I'll take my chances against the Dodgers if that matchup comes up.

I’m really torn between the schadenfreude of Maddon getting canned and Theo skipping town to come back and save the Red Sox.

Easy to forget that the Cubs were projected to win like 80 games this year. They're right where they should be and Theo needs to look in the mirror, not fire Maddon. I suppose it's not on either one that Craig Kimbrel sucks all of a sudden.

Speaking of preseason projections - the Reds were supposed to win 82 games and will finish with at least 83 losses. Still chasing that 1-8 start. You can't make the playoffs in April, but you can miss them blah blah blah. The Brewers, who will be in the Wildcard game, and the Reds have the same run differential, which is both flummoxing and annoying. The good news is the Reds clinched Not Last Place for the first time since 2014 and Eugenio Suarez and they have a pitching staff now. Need to find some runs next year and maybe we can finish in 3rd place.

and as always, I'm glad Boston is eating s*** again.

Nothing brings me more joy right now that for the Braves to not only be back-to-back NL East division winners, but no one in sports media picked them at all before the season, and even when they were on a tear, ESPN and FOX was more focused on the Phillies and the Nats. Braves flew under the radar, and are a better team than so many people give them credit for. I'm pumped for October baseball!

I think the PECOTA prediction being that low had to do with an aging pitching staff who was not going to make it through the season.

I agree with you the front office needs to act, what looked like a 10 year window of dominance 5 years ago looks like it’s closing. Guys haven’t panned out, signings have been awful. Maybe missing the playoffs will be good long term so they can’t use the excuse “we’ve been to the playoffs 5 years in a row” after being bounced from the WC game.

I think Maddon does need to go though. He’s a good manager for a young team and building a culture, but the Cubs aren’t young anymore and cemented a culture. Maddon’s done, I’m interested to see who they bring in (if they go outside of the organization and we don’t get Mark Loretta: manager) to lead this team next year.

This is the same projection system that had the Royals finishing with a sub-.500 record in both years they went to the World Series.

The problem with PECOTA is that the model assumes it can predict how good Anthony Rizzo will be with the same amount of accuracy that it can peg Yu Darvish. The result is a system that takes into account too many variables because it assumes it can predict the inherent volatility in things like middle relief.

Bleacher Report does a hands-down better job at their team preseason predictions than PECOTA. That's how much of a joke PECOTA team projections are.

Marty Brennaman's last game is Thursday. He's become an old crank in the last 10-15 years and he's openly turned a large portion of the fanbase against the best Red since Larkin, and every time I catch a game on the radio while I'm driving it seems like he's off taking a nap or something, But I'm feeling more emotional than I expected. I might be the last generation of kids who fell asleep listening to specific guy call baseball games on the radio and the guy for me was Marty Brennaman (with Joe Nuxhall). It's definitely the end of something that's been such a part of this team for my entire life and that's a bit weird.

My guess is he'll say it either way, but I hope they win Thursday so he can let out one last genuine "and this one belongs to the Reds".

First time since 1981 / 82 that the Brew Crew has made the postseason in back to back years. If they can win out and the Cards falter, perhaps it'll be back-to-back division championships too. That would be pretty neat.

They lost and he didn't get to say it, which sucks.

Yesterday was a microcosm of this team's season and this group has been one of the more frustrating squads I've ever seen this franchise field. Never came through in the clutch, doesn't feel like they had that big hit in a big moment all season, couldn't align pitching with hitting. It was a bunch of watching Eugenio Suarez and Aristedes Aquino hit solo home runs in 4-1 losses.

But hey, didn't finish in last place!

With the Dodgers, Yankees & Astros getting much of the attention, the Twins have quietly won 100 games.

The who?

I don't follow the sport much outside of the Phillies, so I just checked the standings to see who was doing well, and holy balls - they're up to 101 wins now?  That's historic for most teams.  Does anyone know?  Just from having Sports Center on in the background, I usually know who the dominant teams are - for example, I knew the Dodgers were amazing this year (but I didn't realize 105 wins), and that the Yankees were winning their division, the Cubs had faltered, etc.  I don't think I've even heard that there's a team in MIN, let alone a 101-win team.

Would be neat to see them take out the Yankees.
